Health Notes

Fructo-oligosaccharides (FOS) and Other Oligosaccharides

Fructo-oligosaccharides (FOS) and Other Oligosaccharides
This nutrient has been used in connection with the following health goals
  • Reliable and relatively consistent scientific data showing a substantial health benefit.
  • Contradictory, insufficient, or preliminary studies suggesting a health benefit or minimal health benefit.
  • For an herb, supported by traditional use but minimal or no scientific evidence. For a supplement, little scientific support.

Our proprietary "Star-Rating" system was developed to help you easily understand the amount of scientific support behind each supplement in relation to a specific health condition. While there is no way to predict whether a vitamin, mineral, or herb will successfully treat or prevent associated health conditions, our unique ratings tell you how well these supplements are understood by the medical community, and whether studies have found them to be effective for other people.

For over a decade, our team has combed through thousands of research articles published in reputable journals. To help you make educated decisions, and to better understand controversial or confusing supplements, our medical experts have digested the science into these three easy-to-follow ratings. We hope this provides you with a helpful resource to make informed decisions towards your health and well-being.

This supplement has been used in connection with the following health conditions:

High Triglycerides
Dose: 8 to 20 grams daily
Several trials have shown that FOS supplementation lowers triglycerides in people with elevated levels. (more)
Eczema
Dose: 90% galacto-oligosaccharides and 10% fructo-oligosaccharides mixture added daily to infant formula
In one study, adding a mixture of 90% galacto-oligosaccharides and 10% fructo-oligosaccharides to infant formula prevented the development of eczema in babies who were at high risk of developing eczema. (more)
Type 2 Diabetes
Dose: Refer to label instructions
In one trial, supplementing with fructo-oligosaccharides significantly lowered fasting blood-sugar levels and serum total-cholesterol levels in people with type 2 diabetes.(more)
Indigestion, Heartburn, and Low Stomach Acidity
Dose: 5 grams per day
Supplementing with fructo-oligosaccharides may help relieve abdominal discomfort, fullness, constipation, urgency, and diarrhea. (more)
Pre- and Post-Surgery Health
Dose: Refer to label instructions
Supplementing with fructo-oligosaccharides (FOS) appears to improve iron absorption and restore iron levels, which may be reduced after surgery.(more)
High Triglycerides
Dose: 8 to 20 grams daily

Several double-blind trials have evaluated the efficacy of fructo-oligosaccharides (FOS) or inulin (a related compound) for lowering blood cholesterol and triglyceride levels. These trials have shown that in individuals with elevated total cholesterol or triglyceride levels, including people with type 2 diabetes, FOS or inulin (in amounts ranging from 8 to 20 grams daily) produced significant reductions in triglyceride levels; however, the effect on cholesterol levels was inconsistent.1, 2, 3, 4 In people with normal or low cholesterol or triglyceride levels, FOS or inulin produced little effect.5, 6, 7

Eczema
Dose: 90% galacto-oligosaccharides and 10% fructo-oligosaccharides mixture added daily to infant formula

In a double-blind trial, the addition of a mixture of 90% galacto-oligosaccharides and 10% fructo-oligosaccharides to infant formula prevented the development of eczema in infants who were at high risk of developing eczema. The incidence of eczema in the first six months of life was 9.8% in the group receiving oligosaccharides, compared with 23.1% in the placebo group, a statistically significant difference. The product used in this study was designed to mimic the oligosaccharide content of human milk, and was added at a concentration of 0.8 grams per 100 ml.1

Type 2 Diabetes
Dose: Refer to label instructionsIn a preliminary trial, supplementation with fructo-oligosaccharides (FOS) (8 grams per day for two weeks) significantly lowered fasting blood-sugar levels and serum total-cholesterol levels in people with type 2 diabetes.1 However, in another trial, supplementing with FOS (15 grams per day) for 20 days had no effect on blood-glucose or lipid levels in people with type 2 diabetes.2 In addition, some double-blind trials showed that supplementing with FOS or galacto-oligosaccharides (GOS) for eight weeks had no effect on blood-sugar levels, insulin secretion, or blood lipids in healthy people.3, 4 Because of these conflicting results, more research is needed to determine the effect of FOS on diabetes and lipid levels.

Indigestion, Heartburn, and Low Stomach Acidity
Dose: 5 grams per day In a double-blind trial, supplementation with 5 grams of fructo-oligosaccharides per day for six weeks was significantly more effective than a placebo at relieving symptoms of dyspepsia such as such as abdominal discomfort, fullness, constipation, urgency, and diarrhea. The average symptom severity decreased by 44% in the group receiving fructo-oligosaccharides.1

Pre- and Post-Surgery Health
Dose: Refer to label instructions

One preliminary study found iron levels to be reduced after both minor and major surgeries, and iron supplementation prior to surgery was not able to prevent this reduction.1 A controlled trial found that intravenous iron was more effective than oral iron for restoring normal iron levels after spinal surgery in children.2 One animal study reported that supplementation with fructo-oligosaccharides (FOS) improved the absorption of iron and prevented anemia after surgery,3 but no human trials have been done to confirm this finding. Some researchers speculate that iron deficiency after a trauma such as surgery is an important mechanism for avoiding infection, and they suggest that iron supplements should not be given after surgery.4

The term "oligosaccharide" refers to a short chain of sugar molecules ("oligo" means "few" and "saccharide" means "sugar.") Fructo-oligosaccharides (FOS) and inulin, which are found in many vegetables, consist of short chains of fructose molecules. Galacto-oligosaccharides (GOS), which also occur naturally, consist of short chains of galactose molecules. These compounds can be only partially digested by humans.1, 2, 3, 4 When oligosaccharides are consumed, the undigested portion serves as food for "friendly" bacteria, such as Bifidobacteria and Lactobacillus species.

    Comments about Almased®:

I heard about Almased when I started to look for something that would help me lose weight. I started reading the reviews and got a little scared because I am a very picky eater and the bad reviews were mostly related to the taste. After I drank my first shake I was happily surprised that it is not as bad as people described it, For me it just tastes as plain cereal. The best part is that it works, after a week I am seeing results and that is all I care about.

        Comments about Almased®:

I started using Almased 3 days ago as a breakfast meal replacement. The first day I mixed it with 2% milk but I've sinced used water and added frozen fruit. Is it delicious? No. As one reviewer said it tastes like Special K. It really does. It does taste better mixed with fruit. The texture is kind of grainy but much better when mixed in a blender versus a shaker bottle. What does make it more palatable is that I am drinking 1 shake in the morning and I am not hungry at all, even at lunch. At first I thought it was just due to a busy day. Not at all. It fills me up without the bloating or nausea sometimes associated with shakes. I have lost 4.4 lbs. in 3 days without changing anything else. I have tried alot of different products and Almased has made me a believer!

          Comments about Almased®:

I never done this before, give a product shout out, but I'm really excited with my rapid result, and I just want to share them with my girls! The name of the product is Almased. It is powder made with soy protein which really helps in losing fat weight, not muscle weight fast. I actually stumbled upon it by accident.

I have been STRUGGLING to loses about 10 pounds since the beginning on the year with no luck. I signed up for a dance exercise class in April which is a lot of fun, and I exercise on my own, inconsistently . The thing with me is the older I get, the longer I have to be consistently exercising (2 to 3 months) before I see ANY results from all the hard work I put in. Well life is too short, and I just don't have the patients, and so, I get discouraged very easily, and continued to be at a weight I am uncomfortable with. Sometimes I may even skip a meal or two, and I still don't see any results!

Anyway, purely by accident I came across this website: http://www.almased.com/. After reading about their product, I went to other websites to read the reviews. To my surprise, I have to say about 95% of the reviews from all the other websites I checked out were very positive! I wanted to try the products asap, so I went to GNC close to my job at lunch time and purchased a can. I asked the store clerk about the product, and he also had very good things to say about it, but he also warned me that I would have to follow the directions to a T, otherwise I'd me wasting my money. The cost was $39.99!

That evening, last Wednesday, instead of having dinner, which for me was just a fruit/veggie smoothie from my Nutribullet, I used Almased. I wasn't hungry for the rest of the evening, but again I'm stop eating heavy meals for dinner for a while now, (see, I've really been trying ), so I was fine. For breakfast on Thursday morning, after weighing myself, I fixed another Almased drink, and went to work. Now, at work I usually graze on food all day, or at least a few hours apart. I usually start off with a 12 ounce cup of coffee with lots, and lots of sugar and powdered creamer, and a peanut butter on whole wheat bread sandwich for breakfast. Around 10 AM, I would have some type of fruit, and for lunch between 11:30 AM and 12 noon, I would have a salad with a boiled egg, or a turkey and provolone sandwich on whole wheat, or something similar. Around 2 PM, I would have another piece of fruit, or some almonds and dried cranberries. Oh yeah, I have/had a craving for sweets, so I usually have some type of candy during the day depending what I had a taste for.

Okay, so back to Thursday morning…Once I got to work, I almost immediately missed my routine of my usual eating schedule, but realized it was my regular routine I was missing, not the food. See, my stomach wasn't hungry, but my head was. This realization worked for me for a few hours. At lunch time I decided that I HAD to eat something. I had ½ turkey and provolone sandwich, and a side salad, both left over from Wednesday's lunch. This kept my belly and my head at bay until I got home, and had another serving of Almased. I was still feeling a bit hungy though, but instead of giving in, I went to bed at 8 PM! I did not want to waste my $39.99! To my surprise, when I weight myself on Friday morning, I was 1.6 pounds lighter, and cautiously excited! I made my Almased drink and went to work. Now, since I got away with cheating a little on Thursday, and still saw results, I decided to push my luck again a bit on Friday, and ate a salad and a boiled egg for lunch. For my afternoon snack I had ½ peanut butter sandwich on whole wheat bread. For dinner I had another Almased drink. On Saturday morning I had lost 1.4 pounds! Wow, not bad! That was a total of 3 pounds in 2 ½ days! I don't think I ever accomplished that! Okay, now here comes the weekend when discipline gets a little challenging for me in more ways than one ! This is what I did: On both Saturday and Sunday, I had 2 Almased drinks each day, one for breakfast, and one for dinner. For a late lunch both days I had fried croaker, string beans with it one day, and salad and fried plantains another day, and maybe ½ peanut butter on whole wheat bread one of those day; I can't remember for sure. Results: Sunday morning I had not lost or gained any weight. I was a bit disappointed, but not discouraged, I knew I went overboard with the fried food, but since I have a big problem with wasting food, I HAD to eat fried fish again Sunday for lunch. Oh well, I would get back on track Monday. By the way, I exercised a bit on Saturday, and Sunday. A little bit is better than no exercise at all! Also my craving for sweets is disappearing. I may still get a slight urge, but I haven't given it yet, and it gets easier everyday.

Okay, It's Monday morning. I got up feeling refreshed. I had a decent work out this morning, took my shower, and weighed myself. To my surprise, even with two consecutive out of control days, sort of, I lost another 1.2 pounds! That's a total of 4.2 pounds since last Thursday morning! Nothing has ever worked so well for me, and that's why I want to share this with all of you.

Please check out the website, read every tab, even the Q and A tab. Then do as I did; do your research. After that, hopefully you'll give Almased a try, and let me know what type of results you get. I promise you, I am not a spokesperson for Almased! I stumbled on it, I'm seeing great results, I'm feeling motivated, and I wanted to share!

I just bought this product but was concerned about the taste after reading several reviews. I started this morning and mixed it with bottled water. I was pleasantly surprised! It tastes like plain special k cereal with skim milk. So I think this is something I can do. I'll check back with any weight loss results after a couple of weeks.

I really wish they packaged this in a larger container. One 500g container went in 3 days. Other wise, I love it! I've been exercising and counting calories for months, and I plateaued. I wanted something to help me get on track. I stumbled across this product, and thought I give it a try because of all the high ratings. I followed the directions, and it works! I'm only 6 days into using it (along with 30 minutes of cardio twice a week) and I'm down 7 pounds! I can't wait to see where I am at the end of the month. I don't expect to lose 25 pounds in a month, but I'm definately on the right track. I mix mine with a tablespoon of banana cream or chocolate sugar free dry pudding mix. I may also add a tablespoon of PB2, or a 1/2 tsp on coconut extract for taste. Best of all, I'm not hungry afterward. That was my biggest concern. I can walk through the supermarket and not be tempted to buy cakes and chips. For me....this product does what it says it will do.

Best mixed in a blender - I add extra water or ice cubes with a variety of flavor choices like cocoa, vanilla, cinnamon, allspice, orange extract, etc.
Also, add 1 tablespoon of flaxseed oil to blender shake. My husband enjoys these shakes also-even ask for them. We replace brkfast and dinner with a delicious shake. We have lost a total of 15lbs and more noticable inches - since Oct 1!With more energy and feel good about ourselves too. My blood sugar readings have dropped at least 60 points, as well-the A1C will be show much better control next time. Good Stuff!
