A Healthy Person's Guide to Vitamins

A Healthy Person's Guide to Vitamins
A Healthy Person?s Guide to Vitamins: Main Image
Even in healthy people, multivitamins and other supplements may help prevent vitamin and mineral deficiencies
Ideally, daily nutritional needs should be met through healthy eating-but the typical diet does not always supply all the vitamins and minerals a body needs. So even in healthy people, multivitamins and other supplements may help prevent vitamin and mineral deficiencies and they can also provide more nutrients than diet alone, which may help to protect against or manage certain diseases. The following list gives the daily optimum amounts of nutrients that might benefit healthy people.

Folic acid (400 mcg)

  • The FDA-required fortification of grain products may have reduced deficiency in the general US population, but some authorities believe it is not enough to optimally prevent diseases such as heart disease and neural tube defects.
  • The body's need for folic acid doubles during pregnancy. Supplementation prior to, and shortly after, conception is adequate and effective.

Iodine (150 mcg)

  • A common deficiency in developing countries, iodine is more abundant in Western diets. Most people get enough unless they avoid iodized salt, seafood, and sea vegetables.
  • People with thyroid diseases should check with their doctor before using iodine supplements.

Vitamin A (5,000 IU; as natural beta-carotene for nonsmokers)

  • The synthetic beta-carotene in most multivitamins clearly does not prevent cancer and may increase the risk of lung cancer in smokers. In contrast, however, natural beta-carotene and several other carotenoids may help prevent certain diseases, including some cancers, although its safety for smokers has not been demonstrated.
  • Due to concerns about birth defects and bone loss, people should not take over 10,000 IU of supplemental vitamin A in the form of retinol without consulting a doctor.

B Vitamins

  • The typical Western diet may provide thiamine (B1; 1.5 mg), riboflavin (B2; 1.7 mg), and niacin (B3; 20 mg) in adequate amounts as they are added to white flour products and other foods that have been depleted of those vitamins.
  • Biotin (300 mcg): This vitamin is produced by intestinal bacteria in amounts that, along with the typical diet, provide enough to prevent deficiency in healthy people.
  • Pyridoxine(B6; 10 mg): Some deficiency may exist in as many of 25% of people living in Western societies, and may be most common in the elderly.
  • Pantothenic acid (B5; 10 mg): This vitamin appears to be in short supply in the typical diet though its role in disease prevention is unknown.
  • Vitamin B12 (5-100 mcg): Vitamin B12-deficiency is more common among the elderly than in healthy young people, except for vegans (vegetarians who avoid dairy and eggs) and in people who take acid-blocking drugs or antacids for long periods of time.
  • Some people claim to experience improved mood, energy, and/or overall well-being when taking higher-than-RDA amounts of vitamin B1, vitamin B2, vitamin B3, and pantothenic acid, though this has not been demonstrated in research.
  • Folic acid, B12, and pyridoxine help control homocysteine levels in the blood. Elevated homocysteine levels are associated with several diseases. Studies have shown that supplementing with one or more of these vitamins helps prevent or reverse hardening of the arteries (atherosclerosis) and may reduce bone fractures risk.

Vitamin C (100-200 mg)

  • Severe deficiency is uncommon in people who consume Western diets, but mild insufficiency is found in 6% of healthy adults and larger numbers of college students and smokers. Some authorities have suggested that optimal intake for disease prevention may be at least 90 to 100 mg per day.
  • Supplementation with over 200 mg per day of vitamin C by healthy people does not result in higher vitamin C concentrations in the body, and may be no more helpful for preventing disease than smaller amounts.

Vitamin D (400-800 IU)

  • Vitamin D obtained from the diet and from sunlight exposure can be insufficient, especially in older people and vegans during the winter months. Vitamin D insufficiency is associated with bone loss and fractures in older people and other studies have shown supplementing may reduced bone loss and the risk of falls in older people
  • Though toxic in very high amounts, up to 2,000 IU per day is considered safe.

Vitamin E (30-400 IU)

  • Once widely thought to lower risk of heart disease, other trials have negated those findings and even found a small increase in the likelihood of all-cause mortality or heart failure. Therefore, some doctors advise people not to take large amounts of vitamin E (400 IU per day or more). On the other hand, circumstantial evidence suggests that "mixed tocopherols," as opposed to the more widely used alpha-tocopherol form, may be safer and more beneficial for heart-disease prevention.
  • A reduced risk of prostate cancer in smokers was reported in a double-blind trial with 50 IU per day of vitamin E. However, similar studies have not found vitamin E supplements to protect against other cancers.

Vitamin K (80 mcg)

  • Deficiency severe enough to cause bleeding problems is rare in healthy people. However, low vitamin K in the blood and in the diet has been associated with osteoporosis.

Comments about ROCK CREEK PHARMACEUTICAL Anatabloc® - Unflavored:

No back surgery for me since I have found this product. I am a 35 year old female and have had chronic back pain for a year and a half. I have tried physical therapy, Pilates, massage, books on back pain (it says it's stress related, I agree in some cases), a change in diet, and epidural/cortisone shots. The physical therapy, Pilates and massages have helped a bit but only for a temporary time.

When I started taking this I had no back pain and could not believe it. I have not been able to have a normal life since my pain began. I am so amazed that it is working.

Insomnia has been a side effect for me when I was taking the full dosage. So I started taking 3/day in the morning for the first week. I am slowly working up my dosage.

If you take the doses too close together or too many at once it will cause dizziness.

I would rather not have to take this since it is not FDA approved.

I plan on trying decompression for my back. If it works then I won't be taking the supplement anymore.

My friend who takes this says it increases her anxiety. But she has had anxiety problems for 10 years. So she doesn't take it all the time. She has Hashimoto's disease and when she first started it she could not believe how great she felt.

I found a link online that says what symptoms it helps with:

Comments about ROCK CREEK PHARMACEUTICAL Anatabloc® - Unflavored:

I was taking asprin, or Ibuprofen by the handful several times a day and did not get the joint pain and immobility to subside. My stomach and liver were beginning to protest. I dreaded getting in and out of my car or taking the stairs. I was very hopeful when I hear the radio commercial while driving to work and delighted that I could get it at GNC.
I use anatabloc 3-4 times daily and no longer have the unbearable joint pain and my stomach stopped giving me trouble. I was a nail biter for 50 years and that stopped with no effort on my part. I am working out with a personal trainer and am able to do my Turkish Get-Ups again.

I began this product for joint relief in December 2012. After over a year, I have almost completely resolved a twelve year issue in my hands, and more recent issues (noisy neck, knee, ankle) are all gone. I have recommended this to friends, it works to some degree for most people. It just depends on how much value it is for each person. For me, it has been a God send.

Comments about ROCK CREEK PHARMACEUTICAL Anatabloc® - Unflavored:

I love this product and have had amazing success!
I had breast cancer so had lumpectomy with SAVI radiation. I was burned from the radiation and couldn't get that to heal. Was scheduled for another surgery to remove the draining swollen tissue when I discovered Anatabloc. 3 days and the draining had stopped, now totally healed. Dr. was amazed, surgery canceled.
2nd miracle, my daughters struggle with crohn's disease. After 2 surgerys for bowel removal and trying to not get on the dangerous prescriptions for this disease, she started Anatabloc and it has totally put her crohn's in remission.
3rd use is for joint pain. My sister in law has a bad knee and she is a RN. Her knee was so swollen she feared she'd have to stop working and stay off her feet to get the swelling down in her knee. I have become an advocate for Anatabloc and gave her some to try. It worked almost immediately for her. Yes, I am in love with this product.
4thly, I had terrible pain in my hip and had a hard time getting around. Yep, the Anatabloc took care of that too.
My biggest fear is that the FDA is going to remove this product from the market so I am trying to stock up as I am able too. Anatabloc is pretty pricy until you experience the results, then, not so much!!!

In the winter my knees really bother me since I play a lot of tennis. So far I've been taking Anatabloc for 4 weeks now and my knees don't hurt. In fact, I really feel great for 63 years old. The only thing I don't like about this is the amount you have to take sine it's according to weight. I take at least two tablets four times a day. It's working so I guess I will keep taking it :)

Comments about ROCK CREEK PHARMACEUTICAL Anatabloc® - Unflavored:

I was about to turn 40 and back in March of 2013 I decided I was going to doing something off the wall. I decided that I was going to a 1/2 marathon yes 13.1 miles. You would think yea sure all these little guys run all the time. They sure do but wait I was weighing 327 lbs and I was going to run 13.1 miles. I decided early the race is not until mid November 2013 so I had plenty of time to get ready. So there I was walking every morning 5 am with out fail. Then I started jogging and that is when my joints, feet, lower back, started to hurt, and I mean really hurt. I would wake up in pain, soreness and sometimes not even able to walk. By this time I had lost close to 40 lbs. I was driving to work my feet were tired, my knees were hurting, all the pains and aches that a person feels when jogging, and I hear the anatabloc commercial with Fred Couples on the radio. I decided to drive over to the local GNC and started looking around at different produces and asked the young lady behind the counter for advice and recommendations. She said a few other products, then I asked her about Abloc she responded yea we have it I have sold some bottles to a few people but have not heard any feed back from the. I asked for it and purchased the 300 tab bottle. I read the instructions and started thing OMG! I am going to have to take how many a day? 6 servings every day because I was over 221 lbs. I said okay I bought it already let start it. During this time I was still walking and running three days out of the week, short run/walks Tuesdays and Fridays between 4 to 5 miles, walking on Wednesday and Thursday about 2 to 3 miles, and a long run/walk every Sunday morning a long distance run/walk increasing a mile every week. I started with the recommended dosage 12 total tabs a day. The first week I didn't feel anything I was still pain, and hurting everywhere. Week 2 came and I was starting to feel a little better but I would still be in some pain. Then sometime during the 3rd week I started to notice must less pain in my knees, my feet were not as tired, no lower back pain from the constant pounding on the pavement. WOW! It was working for me. I have been taking Abloc since and have been able to increase my running distance and pace. I got busy during the month of October and stop working out consistently and stop taking Abloc and it was the week before the race I decided to take a 6 mile jog/walk man let me tell you all that pain that I was in before I took Abloc came back. I have been tacking Abloc again and with in the second and third day I have notice the swelling go down in my knees and my feet aren't as tired. This week end is the big run for me. By the way I am still a big guy but with Abloc I have been able to loose the LBS and I am not as big as I was when I first started. Abloc has help me get ready to finish my goal of the half marathon. On Tuesday I will post my results and let everyone know how the recover went. But I just want to finish with "If you are considering taking abloc you need to but remember the result don't happen over night they take time."

Comments about ROCK CREEK PHARMACEUTICAL Anatabloc® - Unflavored:

I have been taking Anatabloc for well over a year. I decided to try it after seeing a GNC ad touting it's anti-inflammatory properties. I had a tibial plateau fracture in my right knee about 20 years ago. The injury required two surgeries to fix the bone and then to reattach my ACL. Since then, I have had three more surgeries to clean up the joint as the popping and grinding get too bad after a few years and my mobility starts to be affected. I have very little cartilage left in my knee and prior to discovering Anatabloc, my knee was constantly and severely swollen. So severe was the swelling that I would have fluid removed from my knee with a needle only to have it return within a few days. Over the last twenty years, I have tried just about anything I could find to try to help my knee: cortizone injections, glucosamine chondroitin, prescription NSAIDs like Mobic, and quite a few other things. Nothing really helped. At times, I was taking more Ibuprofen than I like to admit just to get through the day.

Within two days of starting Anatabloc, the swelling had improved 80%. Within about 8 days, the swelling was completely gone and my knee felt better than it had since the original injury. In fact, it feels so good that I am back to playing soccer, which I had not done in the twenty plus years since I injured my knee (playing soccer).

I also was surprised to find that my allergies had completely cleared up. I had been on Claritin and Flonase for as long as I can remember and many other allergy medications before that. I have not had to take any allergy medicine since starting anatabloc.

Anatabloc has also helped immensely with some intestinal issues I had that my doctor suspected was related to a gluten allergy/intolerance (anti-gliadin antibodies were high in a blood test). Before starting Anatabloc I was scheduled to have an endoscopy to try to rule out Celiac disease. The Anatabloc alleviated my symptoms so well that I decided not to have the procedure and have not had any problems for over a year.

There are a few other things that I have noticed over the last year, but cannot be entirely sure that it is not placebo. For example, post-workout recovery seems to be a lot better and it seems to help prevent sunburns. I also have not had any major hangovers while on Anatabloc, even when I know I drank enough to cause a major one.

I am a pretty big guy, so I am currently taking 3 pills 4 times a day. I wish there was a more convenient way to take it, but at least the taste is pretty good.

Comments about ROCK CREEK PHARMACEUTICAL Anatabloc® - Unflavored:

I have aches and pains all over my body. The worst are arthritis in my foot and knees, and soreness in my neck. I took six tablets per day of Anatabloc for 21 days, and felt no benefit at all. Unfortunately, I waited too long to return the product under the 30 day guarantee.
