Amino Acids Overview

Amino Acids Overview
This nutrient has been used in connection with the following health goals
  • Reliable and relatively consistent scientific data showing a substantial health benefit.
  • Contradictory, insufficient, or preliminary studies suggesting a health benefit or minimal health benefit.
  • For an herb, supported by traditional use but minimal or no scientific evidence. For a supplement, little scientific support.

Our proprietary "Star-Rating" system was developed to help you easily understand the amount of scientific support behind each supplement in relation to a specific health condition. While there is no way to predict whether a vitamin, mineral, or herb will successfully treat or prevent associated health conditions, our unique ratings tell you how well these supplements are understood by the medical community, and whether studies have found them to be effective for other people.

For over a decade, our team has combed through thousands of research articles published in reputable journals. To help you make educated decisions, and to better understand controversial or confusing supplements, our medical experts have digested the science into these three easy-to-follow ratings. We hope this provides you with a helpful resource to make informed decisions towards your health and well-being.

Athletic Performance
Dose: Refer to label instructionsAspartic acid is a non-essential amino acid that participates in many biochemical reactions relating to energy and protein. Preliminary, though conflicting, animal and human research suggested a role for aspartic acid (in the form of potassium and magnesium aspartate) in reducing fatigue during exercise.1 However, most studies have found aspartic acid useless in improving either athletic performance or the body's response to exercise.2, 3, 4, 5, 6

Schizophrenia
Dose: Refer to label instructionsL-Theanine is an amino acid present almost exclusively in the tea plant. It has been found to have mood-enhancing and relaxing properties. In a double-blind trial that included patients with schizophrenia or a related condition (schizoaffective disorder) who were taking antipsychotic medications, the addition of 400 mg per day of L-theanine for 8 weeks significantly improved anxiety and various other psychiatric symptoms, compared with a placebo. L-Theanine was safe and well tolerated.1

Amino acids are the building blocks of protein. Twenty amino acids are needed to build the various proteins used in the growth, repair, and maintenance of body tissues. Eleven of these amino acids can be made by the body itself, while the other nine (called essential amino acids) must come from the diet. The essential amino acids are isoleucine, leucine, lysine, methionine, phenylalanine, threonine, tryptophan, and valine. Another amino acid, histidine, is considered semi-essential because the body does not always require dietary sources of it. The nonessential amino acids are arginine, alanine, asparagine, aspartic acid, cysteine, glutamine, glutamic acid, glycine, proline, serine, and tyrosine. Other amino acids, such as carnitine and taurine, are used by the body in ways other than protein-building and are often used therapeutically. L-Theanine is an amino acid found in tea that is said to help relieve stress. Beta-alanine has been used to prevent fatigue during exercise.

      Comments about Cellucor® Alpha Amino™ - Watermelon:

I want to thank Cellucor, Cory and Bob for letting me try out the new improved formula of Alpha Amino. I was sent to try out the watermelon flavor and I was beyond excited to see how much better this new formula is compared to the old one. The watermelon flavor is very refreshing and delicious. It tastes exactly like watermelon Jolly Ranchers and it was pretty sweet. I have used only one serving with about 12 oz. to 15 oz. of water in my shaker. Within a few seconds the powder mixed very well with the water and there are no grams, clumps or residue in my shaker at all. The strength and recovery were noticeable. My resting periods in my workouts between each set and exercise were low. I felt capable of lifting heavier weights plus I was eager to do a few extra sets and drop sets. Also I was able to get 1-3 more reps in my heavy sets. While I am sipping the Alpha Amino during my workout I feel that my muscle fullness and muscle pumps are more full and tight, they don't feel deteriorated. In addition, I don't feel too exhausted and depleted. The one factor I like about the Alpha Amino is the HydoMax because I don't feel dehydrated during my workouts, I notice bigger muscle pumps and even more muscle fullness after, and I feel more recovered.

        Comments about Cellucor® Alpha Amino™ - Watermelon:

Thanks to Cellucor for sending me a sample of Alpha Amino for reviewing. I received Watermelon.

        Taste
The taste was amazing. The flavor reminds me of Watermelon Gatorade/Powerade. It also reminded me of Watermelon Jolly Ranchers. It is a bit on the sweeter side for my liking but it is amazing. There is a hint of coconut but it isn't overwhelming.

        Mixability
As with most Cellucor products that I have had, they all mix very well. There is a small amount of debris but it isn't enough to really tell. From what I could see these were slightly larger particles that aren't as fine as the powder is.

        Dosing
The best dosing that I found was to be one scoop to about 16 oz or so. I found that having two scoops in 24oz was too sweet and that one scoop in 24oz was a bit diluted.
Most of the time when I dosed were after my workouts. It was extremely refreshing especially when I was done with a serious session. There was one session that I did intra-workout where I felt refreshed as I took it. I noticed during that session that I was not sweating as profusely like I typically would have.

        Formula
The new formula is pretty good. I previously received a few trial samples of the last gen AA and I enjoyed it. The new gen formula is a lot more refreshing and is a lot more refined. I cannot compare it too much to the older formula because of the trials so it is hard to say what is bad about it.
In terms of dosing I would like to possibly see if they can further refine it to a smaller dosing. I would not mind paying slightly more for it if I could dish out more servings per container.

        Recovery
The recovery is amazing. Right after a workout you already feel refreshed because of the flavor, in my opinion (especially if the water is extra cold). Typically my soreness affects me the next day. The next morning after my workouts I barely feel sore. Typically if I do feel sore its very minimal. The few times that I tried it intra- workout, I felt as if my sets barely happened. It was as if I was almost in a state from when I started during the small breaks between my sets.

        Pumps
I did not feel too much of a pump. Since most of my dosings occurred post workout, the pump seemed to have been extended. The pump isn't as great as a C4 pump but it was a bit mellower. My experience was that AA sustained a pump a little bit after a workout.

          Comments about Cellucor® Alpha Amino™ - Watermelon:

Alpha amino watermelon flavor is AMAZING. It helps to keep me satisfied between meals, during intense workouts, and for fasted cardio. The new HydroMax makes a big difference while I am teaching my cycling class. Using these aminos during my workout has improved my recovery time. The HydroMax also helps my body stay hydrated throughout my intense training sessions.

Amino's are the building blocks of muscle. It should be a part of everyone's supplement stack. It is a great product that is zero-sugar zero-calories, a must have for diet time!

          Comments about Cellucor® Alpha Amino™ - Watermelon:

First things first, this new generation of Alpha Amino is amazing. The taste is delicious, and it literally taste like you are drinking watermelon candy, and there is no sugar. Another positive is that there are no calories and carbs so you can drink this all day long. I found my self taking this during my workout and loved it. It was hard not to drink all at the same time because of how delicious it was. For effects; I found that my endurance in weightlifting was increased because I didn't feel as sluggish towards the end of my workout. My pumps where slightly better I felt. Also I was doing cardio after my workouts and I felt amazing. I was able to do HIIT cardio and moderate intensity cardio longer than normal. I never got dehydrated from all my sweat because of the hydration formula in this. The HydroMax addition really helps. The Alpha-BCAA Matrix helps your hard worked muscles recover and rebuild, with help from all of the aminos in it also. This is a must buy.

            Comments about Cellucor® Alpha Amino™ - Watermelon:

Cellucor sent me another free sample of their G4 series, this time they sent Alpha Amino in watermelon flavor. Here's my review of it:

How I used it: I took it with 16 oz water while lifting and 10 oz on off days.

TASTE 9/10: the watermelon was refreshing and tasted sweet. The only complaint is that the addition of sucralose can make it a tad bitter of not using enough water. It's really easy on the stomach as well, unlike other amino products.

Mixability 9/10: Easily mixes with or without a metal blender ball. Froths up for a bit, but settles down. The drink itself with settle if you don't drink right away, this is noted on the tub as well.

Effectiveness 10/10: I feel that Alpha Amino has greatly enhanced my lifts for these past few weeks. I'm usually at the gym for at least 2 hours in the morning and I've noticed a significant increase in energy (I'm not a morning person) which has really helped push some heavy sets. I've noticed that I feel more hydrated than before and my recovery time has seemingly increased. Heavy deadlifts haven't left me sore. On days that I'm not at the gym it gives me a great little boost when I need it.

Overall 9/10: I think this is a great product to enhance your workout and the best amino on the market.

I gave it the ultimate test by trying it for the first time on a day where I had 2 training sessions. 1 early in the morning and the 2nd in the evening. Let's just say having the extra gas in the tank from this product was amazing during my 2nd training session. I love aminos in general and this one is no different first use I noticed endurance and post exercise soreness relief! The taste of the lemon lime wasn't my favorite but it wasn't a bad taste. I LOVE the profile and the effects! It mixed easily in 16 oz of water for me, and was still a bit to concentrated for my liking but since I use it for my fasted morning workout I need it to pack a punch. I would recommend it to anyone looking for aminos and who wants an added pump factor! Works best on an empty stomach if you're doing either a fasted cardio, or weight workout. A great all around amino product!

Obsessed with this product. I drink it like 3 times a day :) So delicious. BEST BCAA's I've tried. Zero calories, mixes amazing, tastes AMAZING (all 3 flavors are fantastic). Its been hard for me to find a good BCAA that doesn't leave a nasty after taste or starchy mouth; BUT I FOUND IT :D
