Health Notes

Bitter Orange

Bitter Orange
This nutrient has been used in connection with the following health goals
  • Reliable and relatively consistent scientific data showing a substantial health benefit.
  • Contradictory, insufficient, or preliminary studies suggesting a health benefit or minimal health benefit.
  • For an herb, supported by traditional use but minimal or no scientific evidence. For a supplement, little scientific support.

Our proprietary "Star-Rating" system was developed to help you easily understand the amount of scientific support behind each supplement in relation to a specific health condition. While there is no way to predict whether a vitamin, mineral, or herb will successfully treat or prevent associated health conditions, our unique ratings tell you how well these supplements are understood by the medical community, and whether studies have found them to be effective for other people.

For over a decade, our team has combed through thousands of research articles published in reputable journals. To help you make educated decisions, and to better understand controversial or confusing supplements, our medical experts have digested the science into these three easy-to-follow ratings. We hope this provides you with a helpful resource to make informed decisions towards your health and well-being.

This supplement has been used in connection with the following health conditions:

Indigestion, Heartburn, and Low Stomach Acidity
Dose: 3 cups of tea daily, prepared with 1 to 2 grams of dried peel
Bitter orange has traditionally been used as a digestive aid.(more)
Insomnia
Dose: Refer to label instructions
Bitter orange has a history of use as a calming agent and to counteract insomnia.(more)
Obesity
Dose: Refer to label instructions
Bitter orange contains synephrine, which might promote weight loss. (more)
Indigestion, Heartburn, and Low Stomach Acidity
Dose: 3 cups of tea daily, prepared with 1 to 2 grams of dried peel

Bitter herbs are thought to stimulate digestive function by increasing saliva production and promoting both stomach acid and digestive enzyme production.1 As a result, they are particularly used when there is low stomach acid but not in heartburn (where too much stomach acid could initially exacerbate the situation). These herbs literally taste bitter. Some examples of bitter herbs include greater celandine, wormwood, gentian, dandelion, blessed thistle, yarrow, devil's claw, bitter orange, bitter melon, juniper, andrographis, prickly ash, and centaury.2. Bitters are generally taken either by mixing 1-3 ml tincture into water and sipping slowly 10-30 minutes before eating, or by making tea, which is also sipped slowly before eating.

Very little published research is available on the traditional uses of bitter orange as a digestive aid and sedative. The German Commission E has approved the use of bitter orange for loss of appetite and dyspeptic ailments.3 One test tube study showed bitter orange to potently inhibit rotavirus (a cause of diarrhea in infants and young children).4 Bitter orange, in an herbal combination formula, reportedly normalized stool function and completely eased intestinal pain in 24 people with non-specific colitis and, again in an herbal combination formula, normalized stool function in another 32 people with constipation.5, 6

Insomnia
Dose: Refer to label instructions

Bitter orange has a history of use as a calming agent and to counteract insomnia. There is no clinical trial data to support its efficacy in this regard. The usual amount of tincture used is 2 to 3 ml at bedtime.1, 2

Obesity
Dose: Refer to label instructionsAlthough historically used to stimulate appetite, bitter orange is frequently found in modern weight-loss formulas because synephrine is similar to the compound ephedrine, which is known to promote weight loss. In one study of 23 overweight adults, participants taking a daily intake of bitter orange (975 mg) combined with caffeine (525 mg) and St. John's wort (Hypericum perforatum, 900 mg) for six weeks lost significantly more body weight and fat than the control group.1 No adverse effects on heart rate or blood pressure were found. Bitter orange standardized to contain 4 to 6% synephrine had an anti-obesity effect in rats. However, the amount used to achieve this effect was accompanied by cardiovascular toxicity and mortality.2

      Comments about Cellucor® C4® - Orange Dreamsicle:

Amazing product! I can definitely tell that this new series is a big improvement from the old C4. I take this product before tough workouts such as chest, back, or legs. I received the orange dreamsicle flavor, and although it isn't too bad, I would suggest sticking with blue razz or fruit punch. Great product and I recommend it to anyone looking to amp up their workouts!

        Comments about Cellucor® C4® - Orange Dreamsicle:

The following is a review for the reformulated C4 pre-workout from Cellucor. First I take the product Mon-Fri at 5 a.m. before my morning workouts, I take it after eating a scoop or so of peanut butter but it can be said that I take it on an empty stomach. The product is very much consistent with its predecessor product it terms of effectiveness however this reformulated version provides a lasting energy boost without the "jittery" feeling. Also for those of you who don't like to burn up after taking a pre this product gets as much sweat out of you without igniting an inferno.
Taste – 5/5. I have the dream sickle flavor, it taste great, and a lot like the old Flintstones push pops.
Mix-ability – 5/5. I use a vortex shaker and the powder completely dissolves in 8-10oz of water.
Dosage – 4/5. I gave the dosage a 4 of 5 because occasionally I take two scoops for longer workouts but that's my own preference.
Duration – 4/5. The stuff works, last for around two hours per scoop. The only reason I gave this a 4/5 is because it can feel like it's wearing out sooner than expected.
Side Effects – No rating. This product doesn't really have many side effects at all, there is a slight crash to be felt after use but other than that there is nothing to be concerned with.
Overall this product is an amazing supplement that I would recommend to anyone who is in the market for a new pre-workout.

        Comments about Cellucor® C4® - Orange Dreamsicle:

I was given the opportunity to try out the new Cellucor G4 C4 formula and just like the old formula, its staple in my pre-workout rotation is uncontended. Mixability (10/10) - I already had my tolerance established, so I went with 2 scoops in 20 oz of water. No grams, grains or residue and no settling. Taste (9/10) - The Orange Dreamsicle flavor is a new one for me, and went down very easy. Tastes great, no nasty after taste. My only complaint was it dried out my palate and tounge while consuming. Otherwise one of the better tasting pre-workouts I've had. Energy/Focus (9/10) - I took this product 30 minutes pre-workout. After about 20 min, I experienced a significant boost in energy and a very moderate flush from the niacin but not overwhelming. Once I arrived at the gym, my focus was superb. Felt so good after my big lift that I added 3-4 additional exercises and before I knew it I had been in the gym for 1 hour 15 min! Strength (10/10) - I blasted through some accessory exercises before jumping into my 5/3/1 on the deadlift. My energy level remained peaked, blasting through 5 reps @ 75% 1RM and 3 reps @ 85%. At my 95% 1RM attempt, I picked it up once and felt so much energy I went for 2 more! From there I had 3-4 accessory exercises left but I had so much energy I added some more exercises. Vascularity/Pump (10/10) - Pump was insane. My lats, middle back and lower back felt so tight and full that it felt like my skin was stretching. Veins were bulging and pressed against the skin. Formula (9/10) - Overall I think that Cellucor has made some excellent improvements to its formula. The energy felt while using this pre-workout has been unmatched, despite some better focus on other preworkouts. No jittery feeling, no upset stomach (took on empty stomach), no reflux, and didn't go flat in the middle of my workout. Despite the excellent flavoring and mix ability, my only turn off with this item was how much it dried out my palate and tounge while consuming. Otherwise another solid Cellucor product.

The new formula C4 Dreamsicle was the bomb! As soon as I opened the bottle and saw how the powder was smooth and not gritty, I knew it was going to mix so much better than the old formula. The taste was smooth and tasty, not overpowering at all. My workout was 45 minutes later after taking it but 20 minutes after drinking it I felt pumped and ready to destroy the gym! I noticed that I was more determined to hit 15 reps in my sets rather than the normal 10. two thumbs up on the new formula!
