Health Notes

Whey Protein

Whey Protein
This nutrient has been used in connection with the following health goals
  • Reliable and relatively consistent scientific data showing a substantial health benefit.
  • Contradictory, insufficient, or preliminary studies suggesting a health benefit or minimal health benefit.
  • For an herb, supported by traditional use but minimal or no scientific evidence. For a supplement, little scientific support.

Our proprietary "Star-Rating" system was developed to help you easily understand the amount of scientific support behind each supplement in relation to a specific health condition. While there is no way to predict whether a vitamin, mineral, or herb will successfully treat or prevent associated health conditions, our unique ratings tell you how well these supplements are understood by the medical community, and whether studies have found them to be effective for other people.

For over a decade, our team has combed through thousands of research articles published in reputable journals. To help you make educated decisions, and to better understand controversial or confusing supplements, our medical experts have digested the science into these three easy-to-follow ratings. We hope this provides you with a helpful resource to make informed decisions towards your health and well-being.

Athletic Performance
Dose: 20 grams daily up to 1.2 grams of per 2.2 of pounds body weight per day

Animal studies suggest that whey protein can increase gains in lean body mass resulting from exercise.1 A controlled trial found that six weeks of strength training while taking 1.2 grams of whey protein per 2.2 of pounds body weight per day resulted in greater gains in lean body mass, but improved only one out of four strength tests.2 Another controlled study found that people taking 20 grams per day of whey protein for three months performed better on a test of short-term intense cycling exercise than people taking a similar amount of milk protein (casein).3 However, a double-blind trial found that men taking 1.5 grams per 2.2 lbs of body weight per day of predigested whey protein for 12 weeks along with a strength training exercise program gained only half as much lean body mass and had significantly smaller increases in strength compared with men using a similar amount of predigested casein along with strength training.4 A controlled study of HIV-infected women found that adding whey protein to strength training exercise was no more effective than exercise alone for increasing strength or improving body composition.5

Osteoporosis
Dose: Refer to label instructions

Some whey proteins may reduce bone loss.1 Milk basic protein (MBP) is a mixture of some of the proteins found in whey protein. A preliminary trial found that 300 mg per day of MBP improved blood measures of bone metabolism in men, suggesting more bone formation was occurring than bone loss.2 A double-blind trial found that women taking 40 mg per day of MBP for six months had greater gains in bone density compared with those taking a placebo.3 No osteoporosis-related research has been done using complete whey protein mixtures.

Obesity
Dose: Refer to label instructions

Whey protein may aid weight loss due to its effect on appetite. In a preliminary study, people were given 48 grams of either whey protein or milk protein (casein). Whey consumption resulted in more hunger satisfaction and reduced the amount of food eaten 90 minutes later compared with casein consumption.1 However, a double-blind study found that men taking 1.5 grams per 2.2 lbs body weight per day of whey protein for 12 weeks along with a low-calorie diet and a strength training exercise program lost the same amount of weight and body fat as did a control group that followed a similar program, but took a casein supplement instead of whey protein.2

Whey protein is a mixture of some of the proteins naturally found in milk. The major proteins found in whey protein include beta-lactoglobulin and alpha-lactalbumin. Whey protein has one of the highest protein digestibility-corrected amino acid scores (PDCAAS; a measure of protein bioavailability) and is more rapidly digested than other proteins, such as casein (another milk protein). 1

Comments about GNC GenetixHD™ ISO-DEFINE™ - Swiss Chocolate:

I will start off by saying that I am not a fan of protein shakes because mostly of them have sugars and tons of carbohydrates that are not good to form a lean body or sometimes just taste bad. However, after reading the nutrition fact of this product I decided to give it a try and so far I LOVE IT! I have a very clean diet, love how full this shake makes me feel right after my workouts, taste good, have tons of good ingridients such as CLA which is pretty amazing, low sugar levels. Mix well with my unsweeted almond vanilla milk and with mixed berries. I share one scoop between me and my hubby and we both love the taste and the fully sensation. I feel my body leaner after 2 weeks with this product. The only issue is the lack of variety in flavors but i can work with choco & vanilla. Yes it is expensive BUT GNC constanly has promotions. I got two of these protein powder for 70USD (after tax) so I am good for 4 months with protein shakes.

Comments about GNC GenetixHD™ ISO-DEFINE™ - Swiss Chocolate:

Bought this product hoping it would be better than any norma protein I purchased.. For the most part it worked great, you need to use two scoops a day to get a good effect though, and by doing that it runs you at more than 5$ a serving which is one of the most outrageous things I've ever heard, particularly because gold standard from optimum nutrition or combat powder from musclepharm both work just as well and will cost you less than 2$ a day... It works, but by no means is this worth the money..
If you want the CLA, purchase it separately, there is nothing special about this protein blend.

Comments about GNC GenetixHD™ ISO-DEFINE™ - Swiss Chocolate:

I purchased for Smoothies in the morning. I've lost 8 Lbs out of my 10 Lb target. I use the Iso-Define Berry Sorbet every morning with 1 cup of Unsweetened Vanilla almond milk which is only 30 calories. Far less than skim milk at 110. I add a cup of frozen mixed berry fruit and 2 Tablespoons ground flax & 1/2 a banana. It fills me up until Lunch. I wish GNC would add a vanilla flavor so I could switch up the fruit. With vanilla I could use peaches, pineapple, mango etc as currently I can only get chocolate and berry at my local GNC store.

I used this product one scoop after workout.
I also used it as a meal replacement shake on a few occasions when I wanted a boost of protein etc. It was easy to down (sometimes I blended it with water and ice like a shake). I saw results.
The only negative is the swiss chocolate flavor is strange, not a favorite. I am hoping they come out with some new flavors.

Comments about GNC GenetixHD™ ISO-DEFINE™ - Swiss Chocolate:

I love this stuff! I think it could use a flavor boost but I am pleased with how it has been keeping my weight more stable. I use skim milk and I add ice and a 1/4 to 1/3 cup of non-fat Greek yogurt. we go from 20 grams of protein to 32. I feel the chocolate taste is a little flat but a TBS of coco powder is perfect to correct it no fat, no sugar and it even add a dash more protein. I am pleased with this product and I look forward trying more products in this line. I am going to be 50 and I have been making life changes over the last year and this was a great choice for me.

I take one scoop after I work out everyday with 6 ounces of milk. The protein is by far the best tasting protein powder I've ever had and mixes well with milk or water. The protein helps a lot with rebuilding muscles, but at the same time doesn't put on any fat which is perfect.

Comments about GNC GenetixHD™ ISO-DEFINE™ - Swiss Chocolate:

This is only my second protein supplement used compared to another protein (ready bottle)supplement. The GNC rep told me I should consider using a lean protein instead. Within about two weeks of use and exercise I noticed strength, gain, and performance in my timing as well as speed. Currently, it has been about one month of use and I have not gained any weight and that is a good thing for me since I am not trying to. I use another Whey product as an alternate. I wish this came in a larger size than what it does. It would be great if the company made reductions in the marketing of the package and placed it in a simple bag. Maybe the cost would be cheaper. Overall I have been satisfied with the product.
