Health Notes

Tart Cherry

Tart Cherry
This nutrient has been used in connection with the following health goals
  • Reliable and relatively consistent scientific data showing a substantial health benefit.
  • Contradictory, insufficient, or preliminary studies suggesting a health benefit or minimal health benefit.
  • For an herb, supported by traditional use but minimal or no scientific evidence. For a supplement, little scientific support.

Our proprietary "Star-Rating" system was developed to help you easily understand the amount of scientific support behind each supplement in relation to a specific health condition. While there is no way to predict whether a vitamin, mineral, or herb will successfully treat or prevent associated health conditions, our unique ratings tell you how well these supplements are understood by the medical community, and whether studies have found them to be effective for other people.

For over a decade, our team has combed through thousands of research articles published in reputable journals. To help you make educated decisions, and to better understand controversial or confusing supplements, our medical experts have digested the science into these three easy-to-follow ratings. We hope this provides you with a helpful resource to make informed decisions towards your health and well-being.

This supplement has been used in connection with the following health conditions:

Dose: 80 mg anthocyanins, the equivalent of approximately 100-120 cherries, 16-24 ounces tart cherry juice blend, 1 ounce of liquid concentrate, or 400 mg of concentrate in tablets or capsules
In a preliminary trial, people with osteoarthritis who took tart cherry extract for three months reported reduced joint tenderness and less joint pain and disability. (more)
Sprains and Strains and Exercise-Related Muscle Injury
Dose: 80 mg anthocyanins, the equivalent of approximately 100-120 cherries, 16-24 ounces tart cherry juice blend, 1 ounce of liquid concentrate, or 400 mg of concentrate in tablets or capsules
Some studies indicate that supplementing with tart cherry may support muscle strength recovery and reduce pain, especially after exercise. (more)
Fibromyalgia
Dose: 80 mg anthocyanins, the equivalent of approximately 100-120 cherries, 16-24 ounces tart cherry juice blend, 1 ounce of liquid concentrate, or 400 mg of concentrate in tablets or capsules

Sprains and Strains and Exercise-Related Muscle Injury
Dose: 80 mg anthocyanins, the equivalent of approximately 100-120 cherries, 16-24 ounces tart cherry juice blend, 1 ounce of liquid concentrate, or 400 mg of concentrate in tablets or capsules An animal study found reduced blood measures of muscle damage after strenuous exercise when the animals were fed tart cherry juice prior to exercise.1 In a small, double-blind study, young men drank 12 ounces twice daily of tart cherry juice blended with apple juice, [note: ratio not given] equivalent to 80 mg per day of anthocyanins or 100-120 cherries per day. After eight days the men performed intense elbow flexion exercises, and after drinking tart cherry juice this exercise resulted in less muscle pain and loss of strength compared to after drinking a placebo juice.2 In a small double-blind study, trained athletes took about one ounce twice daily of a tart cherry juice concentrate, containing about 550 mg per day of anthocyanin, for ten days beginning seven days before an intense session of weight-training leg exercises. Compared to when they took a placebo concentrate, taking tart cherry concentrate resulted in faster recovery of leg muscle strength after the exercise.3 Two double-blind trials investigated the effects of tart cherry juice in long distance runners. In one small double-blind trial,4 drinking eight ounces twice daily of tart cherry juice blended with apple juice, [note: ratio not given] equivalent to 80 mg per day of anthocyanins or 100-120 cherries per day, for eight days beginning five days before a marathon resulted in faster recovery of leg muscle strength and smaller elevations in post-race blood measures of inflammation. However, there was no difference in muscle soreness or in post-race blood measures of muscle damage. In another, larger double-blind trial,5 long distance runners who drank 10.5 ounces twice daily of tart cherry juice blended with apple juice, [note: ratio not given] equivalent to 80 mg per day of anthocyanins or 100-120 cherries per day, for eight days beginning one week before the race reported only one-third as much post-race muscle pain compared to those who used a placebo juice.

While about one-third of the women reported significantly less elbow muscle pain when using tart cherry juice before exercise, the average effect in the overall group was no better than with the placebo.5

Comments about GNC PRO PERFORMANCE GNC PUREDGE™ ENERGY - Natural Cherry Limeade:

I'm 50 and had been looking for a long time for a morning energy boost. I don't drink coffee or sodas. The two most important factors I wanted were natural ingredients and low sugar content.

Came across an ad for the product in a cycling magazine and bought it at my local GNC. It's perfect for me. Take it first thing in the morning before my workout. It's a bit hard to mix manually. Because it doesn't have a lot of sugar, it is not super tasting, but not bad either. No big deal to me. Goes down in one gulp anyway.

I take it 3-4 times per week and really like it so far.

Comments about GNC PRO PERFORMANCE GNC PUREDGE™ ENERGY - Natural Cherry Limeade:

Got this because the GNC lady said it would NOT tingle - I HATE for anything to "TINGLE." Never thought about it after that until 4 doses later (I was taking with the GNC Amino) did I pinpoint, experience, and realize the side effects of beta-alanine. Absolutely hate it - it tingles so bad for me sometimes it feels like my arms, hands, neck, legs are being eaten by fire ants. Of course this probably differs per person, but just not something I want at all. Also, it's pretty hard to dissolve.

Comments about GNC PRO PERFORMANCE GNC PUREDGE™ ENERGY - Natural Cherry Limeade:

I LOVE this product! I don't use it as a pre-workout; it doesn't have enough kick for me. But when my 2:30 feeling rolls around (and when I'm mot likely to binge) I drink the Energy. My cravings to eat sugar are gone and I'm left with a great boost of energy. No jitters or "skin-on-fire" feeling associated with other pre-workouts. Close to drinking a couple cups of coffee.

Comments about GNC PRO PERFORMANCE GNC PUREDGE™ ENERGY - Natural Cherry Limeade:

I've been taking $p@rk but thought running in GNC for a similar product would be simple. As with other products like this, I added it to cold bottled water, shook it up and drank. This one was fizzy/foamy. It tasted okay but not great either. It gave me energy within 30-minutes but it didn't last; by the afternoons I always felt like I needed another one ... or two! i didn't finish the canister before I gave the remainder away. I'll stick to what I was using!

I mix the product with water and whey protein before I work out. About 10 minutes after I take it, I feel tingling all over my body and seem to have energy for hours longer than I normally would. As far as I can tell the product is working for me. It kind of tastes bad, but mixing it with my vanilla whey protein makes it taste just fine.

I tried this one morning at work when I was very tired. Mixed it with water which wasn't the best, but it was drinkable. Went through the whole day with plenty of energy. Actually had trouble going to sleep that night because of the energy I still had. Tried half a serving in grape juice and it was tasty. Had plenty of energy through the day and was able to go to bed that night. I have shared this with several family members and friends and they all love it.

Comments about GNC PRO PERFORMANCE GNC PUREDGE™ ENERGY - Natural Cherry Limeade:

I did like this product. Being a natural product is very important to me. I have had some concern with all the other products not being tested for safety. This product tasted well and helped boost my energy. The only thing I didn't get was that pump or fullness in my muscles that I got from other products.
