Whey Protein

Whey Protein
This nutrient has been used in connection with the following health goals
  • Reliable and relatively consistent scientific data showing a substantial health benefit.
  • Contradictory, insufficient, or preliminary studies suggesting a health benefit or minimal health benefit.
  • For an herb, supported by traditional use but minimal or no scientific evidence. For a supplement, little scientific support.

Our proprietary "Star-Rating" system was developed to help you easily understand the amount of scientific support behind each supplement in relation to a specific health condition. While there is no way to predict whether a vitamin, mineral, or herb will successfully treat or prevent associated health conditions, our unique ratings tell you how well these supplements are understood by the medical community, and whether studies have found them to be effective for other people.

For over a decade, our team has combed through thousands of research articles published in reputable journals. To help you make educated decisions, and to better understand controversial or confusing supplements, our medical experts have digested the science into these three easy-to-follow ratings. We hope this provides you with a helpful resource to make informed decisions towards your health and well-being.

Athletic Performance
Dose: 20 grams daily up to 1.2 grams of per 2.2 of pounds body weight per day

Animal studies suggest that whey protein can increase gains in lean body mass resulting from exercise.1 A controlled trial found that six weeks of strength training while taking 1.2 grams of whey protein per 2.2 of pounds body weight per day resulted in greater gains in lean body mass, but improved only one out of four strength tests.2 Another controlled study found that people taking 20 grams per day of whey protein for three months performed better on a test of short-term intense cycling exercise than people taking a similar amount of milk protein (casein).3 However, a double-blind trial found that men taking 1.5 grams per 2.2 lbs of body weight per day of predigested whey protein for 12 weeks along with a strength training exercise program gained only half as much lean body mass and had significantly smaller increases in strength compared with men using a similar amount of predigested casein along with strength training.4 A controlled study of HIV-infected women found that adding whey protein to strength training exercise was no more effective than exercise alone for increasing strength or improving body composition.5

Osteoporosis
Dose: Refer to label instructions

Some whey proteins may reduce bone loss.1 Milk basic protein (MBP) is a mixture of some of the proteins found in whey protein. A preliminary trial found that 300 mg per day of MBP improved blood measures of bone metabolism in men, suggesting more bone formation was occurring than bone loss.2 A double-blind trial found that women taking 40 mg per day of MBP for six months had greater gains in bone density compared with those taking a placebo.3 No osteoporosis-related research has been done using complete whey protein mixtures.

Obesity
Dose: Refer to label instructions

Whey protein may aid weight loss due to its effect on appetite. In a preliminary study, people were given 48 grams of either whey protein or milk protein (casein). Whey consumption resulted in more hunger satisfaction and reduced the amount of food eaten 90 minutes later compared with casein consumption.1 However, a double-blind study found that men taking 1.5 grams per 2.2 lbs body weight per day of whey protein for 12 weeks along with a low-calorie diet and a strength training exercise program lost the same amount of weight and body fat as did a control group that followed a similar program, but took a casein supplement instead of whey protein.2

Whey protein is a mixture of some of the proteins naturally found in milk. The major proteins found in whey protein include beta-lactoglobulin and alpha-lactalbumin. Whey protein has one of the highest protein digestibility-corrected amino acid scores (PDCAAS; a measure of protein bioavailability) and is more rapidly digested than other proteins, such as casein (another milk protein). 1

Comments about GNC Pro Performance® AMP Amplified Wheybolic Extreme 60™ STRENGTH - Vanilla:

I had been using the Amplified Wheybolic Extreme 60 for a few years, even when I wasn't hitting the weights. I found it to be a satisfying meal replacement. I ran out the other day and was talked into buying the one with the Leucine. I didn't think twice about making the purchase since GNC always has good stuff. I almost projectile vomited this stuff all over the gym lobby after taking my first big swig. The after taste was similar to ear wax jelly beans, only stronger. Taking it back and hoping they still make the good stuff I used to take.

Comments about GNC Pro Performance® AMP Amplified Wheybolic Extreme 60™ STRENGTH - Vanilla:

I will usually have two 1 scoop shakes a day. One right after my workout and the second in the middle of the night when you wake up wanting to eat anything good or bad. This hits the spot with only 90 calories. It kills that midnight craving and helps get me back to sleep. Might seem a little pricey but for 1 scoop serving it runs about $1.40 a serving of quality stuff. So what's it worth to you to have a lean protein source?

Comments about GNC Pro Performance® AMP Amplified Wheybolic Extreme 60™ STRENGTH - Vanilla:

I started using the Platinum version of AMP 60 whey just recently. Road bike about 200-300 miles a week Age is 66
My ride strength has taken a major leap fwd.
Example: 70 mile ride Id get to a steep long hill start to fade and have to downshift. Same hills are now taken in a higher gear and speed overall has increased by almost two mph average with same heart rate. I look at my bike computer and stare in amazement. Take one scoop every morning and first thing after a ride for recovery.
My personal mix: about 6oz of orange juice, one scoop of AMP 60 platinum(vanilla), couple of frozen strawberries, some fresh blueberries with tablespoon of Chia seed. All blend well in a Bullet blender. Tastes great. Remarkable stamina and strength results with this product.
Side: Also use a Gu(espresso love) before ride and water with electrolyte bottle

Comments about GNC Pro Performance® AMP Amplified Wheybolic Extreme 60™ STRENGTH - Vanilla:

This is a powerful mix and it mixes great with water or milk! You get 60g of Protein with 3 scoops compared to 4 with most other protein mixes who usually top out at 30-40g of protein. It is kind of expensive but worth the money considering the power that's packed inside the powder. I take a scoop about 20-30 minutes before my workout, then two scoops directly after workout. I see quick improvements in my physique and feel energized while working out, and recovery is a sinch. I'd definitely recommend this to any athlete beginner or experienced.

I had been using the previous version and just tried this one yesterday for the first time. I can't yet speak on the effectiveness since I haven't been using it long enough but the taste was as bad as advertised by a couple of people below. I never know what to believe when reading reviews so I went ahead and bought this newer version based on the purported improved quality. Hopefully it really is more effective because the taste has gone from very good to borderline awful, if not awful. I had used both Vanilla and Cookies and Cream of the previous version and they were both good to very good in taste. Hopefully they can fix the taste of this version if it really is an upgrade in other ways. I gave it 2 stars instead of 1 simply based on a good experience with the previous product and the assumption that the effectiveness is probably still equal or better.

Comments about GNC Pro Performance® AMP Amplified Wheybolic Extreme 60™ STRENGTH - Vanilla:

My husband and I have loyally maintained a gold card membership and been using the AMP Wheybolic Extreme 60 for approximately 3 years; however, recently we decided to purchase the PLATINUM EDITION, off the salesperson's recommendation. Not only does the "new" product taste COMPLETELY different and leave a disgusting after taste in your month, the product's consistency is off-putting. The powder fails to completely dissolve in any amount of liquid and can become "foamy" if mixed in a blender. If you enjoy having curds at the top of your protein shake, give it a try; if NOT I advise that you stick with the standard version. I would not recommend this product to anyone and have even made attempts to return/exchange the Platinum Edition.
