Health Notes

Conjugated Linoleic Acid

Conjugated Linoleic Acid
This nutrient has been used in connection with the following health goals
  • Reliable and relatively consistent scientific data showing a substantial health benefit.
  • Contradictory, insufficient, or preliminary studies suggesting a health benefit or minimal health benefit.
  • For an herb, supported by traditional use but minimal or no scientific evidence. For a supplement, little scientific support.

Our proprietary "Star-Rating" system was developed to help you easily understand the amount of scientific support behind each supplement in relation to a specific health condition. While there is no way to predict whether a vitamin, mineral, or herb will successfully treat or prevent associated health conditions, our unique ratings tell you how well these supplements are understood by the medical community, and whether studies have found them to be effective for other people.

For over a decade, our team has combed through thousands of research articles published in reputable journals. To help you make educated decisions, and to better understand controversial or confusing supplements, our medical experts have digested the science into these three easy-to-follow ratings. We hope this provides you with a helpful resource to make informed decisions towards your health and well-being.

This supplement has been used in connection with the following health conditions:

Obesity
Dose: 3.2 to 4.2 grams daily
Though the evidence is conflicting, some studies have shown CLA to be effective at helping people lose body fat. (more)
Athletic Performance
Dose: Refer to label instructions
Conjugated linoleic acid may play a role in reducing body fat. Research has reported that CLA supplementation produces minor gains in muscle size and strength in weight-training men.(more)
Prostate Cancer
Dose: Refer to label instructions
Preliminary research suggests that CLA might reduce the risk of cancers at several sites, including breast, prostate, colorectal, lung, skin, and stomach.(more)
Breast Cancer
Dose: Refer to label instructions
Preliminary research suggests that CLA might reduce breast cancer risk.(more)
Obesity
Dose: 3.2 to 4.2 grams dailyA double-blind trial found that exercising individuals taking 1,800 mg per day of conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) lost more body fat after 12 weeks than did a similar group taking a placebo.1 However, two other studies found that amounts of CLA from 0.7 to 3.0 grams per day did not affect body composition.2, 3 Most double-blind trials have found that larger amounts of CLA, 3.2 to 4.2 grams per day, do reduce body fat;4, 5, 6, 7 however, one double-blind study of experienced strength-training athletes reported no effect of 6 grams per day of CLA on body fat, muscle mass, or strength improvement.8

Athletic Performance
Dose: Refer to label instructions

Conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) is a slightly altered form of the essential fatty acid linoleic acid. Animal research suggests an effect of CLA supplementation on reducing body fat.1, 2 Controlled human research has reported that 5.6 to 7.2 grams per day of CLA produces only non-significant gains in muscle size and strength in experienced and inexperienced weight-training men.3, 4, 5 A double-blind study of a group of trained men and women reported reduced body fat in the upper arm after 12 weeks of supplementation with 1.8 grams per day of CLA.6 Further research using more accurate techniques for measuring body composition is needed to confirm these findings.

Comments about GNC Total Lean™ CLA Soft Chew - Strawberry-Banana Smoothie:

These were recommended by a friend. I bought a bag and after a month, I noticed a big change in my overall appearance. My goal was to have my abs show more and the soft chews helped me reach that goal. I work out every day. Concentrating on my abs in particular. Thanks to the chews, I get compliments nonstop at the beach.

At first the chews messed with my digestive system but after 2 weeks, my body got used to them and adjusted to it. They taste terrible to me. Others say they don't mind the taste but it has a very "mediciney" flavor.

I will continue to take them, as I still have some fat around my waist to get rid of. I haven't had any negative side effects with this product. I strongly recommend them if you're trying to lose fat around your stomach.

Oh, they don't boost my energy level at all like they claim to do. Still worth it though.

Comments about GNC Total Lean™ CLA Soft Chew - Strawberry-Banana Smoothie:

I'm a 30 year-old female and I've been taking this CLA chew once a day right after dinner for the past three weeks and the results have been pretty good, considering the fact that I haven't been exercising much lately.

Belly fat is my biggest problem and I definitely don't feel full or bloated for many hours after I eat like I used to. I also notice that this definitely surpresses my appetite. Yesterday I didn't realize I hadn't eaten anything until my stomach started growling loudly at about 4pm.

I've noticed that I've lost a few pounds and my clothes fit a little better. Again, this is without regular workouts. For some reason this also has made me crave different food. I used to eat fast food at least 3x a week, but lately all I want is fruit, and fruit smoothies, and salads, and vegetables... you get the idea. I'm also craving A LOT of protein shakes - not meat - but shakes. I don't know if the protein cravings are related to increased muscle mass, but they are definitely happening.

The staff member told me I should buy two packages when she recommeneded this item, and I'm regretting not listening to her. I didn't realize it would have the good effects that it does.

I notice this only has 500mg of CLA but so far that has been enough to help me.
