Health Notes

Conjugated Linoleic Acid

Conjugated Linoleic Acid
This nutrient has been used in connection with the following health goals
  • Reliable and relatively consistent scientific data showing a substantial health benefit.
  • Contradictory, insufficient, or preliminary studies suggesting a health benefit or minimal health benefit.
  • For an herb, supported by traditional use but minimal or no scientific evidence. For a supplement, little scientific support.

Our proprietary "Star-Rating" system was developed to help you easily understand the amount of scientific support behind each supplement in relation to a specific health condition. While there is no way to predict whether a vitamin, mineral, or herb will successfully treat or prevent associated health conditions, our unique ratings tell you how well these supplements are understood by the medical community, and whether studies have found them to be effective for other people.

For over a decade, our team has combed through thousands of research articles published in reputable journals. To help you make educated decisions, and to better understand controversial or confusing supplements, our medical experts have digested the science into these three easy-to-follow ratings. We hope this provides you with a helpful resource to make informed decisions towards your health and well-being.

This supplement has been used in connection with the following health conditions:

Obesity
Dose: 3.2 to 4.2 grams daily
Though the evidence is conflicting, some studies have shown CLA to be effective at helping people lose body fat. (more)
Athletic Performance
Dose: Refer to label instructions
Conjugated linoleic acid may play a role in reducing body fat. Research has reported that CLA supplementation produces minor gains in muscle size and strength in weight-training men.(more)
Prostate Cancer
Dose: Refer to label instructions
Preliminary research suggests that CLA might reduce the risk of cancers at several sites, including breast, prostate, colorectal, lung, skin, and stomach.(more)
Breast Cancer
Dose: Refer to label instructions
Preliminary research suggests that CLA might reduce breast cancer risk.(more)
Obesity
Dose: 3.2 to 4.2 grams dailyA double-blind trial found that exercising individuals taking 1,800 mg per day of conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) lost more body fat after 12 weeks than did a similar group taking a placebo.1 However, two other studies found that amounts of CLA from 0.7 to 3.0 grams per day did not affect body composition.2, 3 Most double-blind trials have found that larger amounts of CLA, 3.2 to 4.2 grams per day, do reduce body fat;4, 5, 6, 7 however, one double-blind study of experienced strength-training athletes reported no effect of 6 grams per day of CLA on body fat, muscle mass, or strength improvement.8

Athletic Performance
Dose: Refer to label instructions

Conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) is a slightly altered form of the essential fatty acid linoleic acid. Animal research suggests an effect of CLA supplementation on reducing body fat.1, 2 Controlled human research has reported that 5.6 to 7.2 grams per day of CLA produces only non-significant gains in muscle size and strength in experienced and inexperienced weight-training men.3, 4, 5 A double-blind study of a group of trained men and women reported reduced body fat in the upper arm after 12 weeks of supplementation with 1.8 grams per day of CLA.6 Further research using more accurate techniques for measuring body composition is needed to confirm these findings.

Comments about GNC Total Lean™ CLA:

Ok, the first thing I will say is, yes. It did work for me. It was hard to swallow at first but I did get used to it quickly. Im a 20 yr old and hardly ever work out but I wanted something to help my metabolism so I tried this. IT DID NOT WORK RIGHT AWAY. Im tired of people saying, "oh I started taking it two weeks ago and I see no results." All you people want is to sit on your butt and get results.NO you have to work for it. Three meal at four hours apart and healthy snacks with a bit of standing got me from 167 to 145 in about three months. Want better results then work out, eat right and be patient. STOP BEING LAZY!

Comments about GNC Total Lean™ CLA:

A little bit about me-I weigh 152 pounds. I began working out hard 8 months ago (gym 5x a week sometimes up 7x). My routine varies day to day (chest, shoulders, back, biceps, etc.) I began taking CLA two weeks ago to hit my goal weight of 145 so I can begin intensifying my weight workouts. Well in the interim of taking this pill I would say it DOES** curb appetite. However if you are looking to not curb your appetite, don't take it. Ok, so we agreed it curbs appetite. SO obviously i ate less. Eating less, lifting weights i stayed at 152. Somebody please explain why this is. AND DO NOT STATE that muscle weighs more than fat, because i have been killing the gym with cardio and weights. Their is NO REASON why I am not down ONE POUND with or WITHOUT CLA. Obviously CLA has had no effect on my life whatsoever.

        Sincerely,

        FITWOMAN

Comments about GNC Total Lean™ CLA:

First time trying CLA. I have lost 40 pounds in 1 year with a lot of exercise (toning and cardio) and watching what I eat. The mid-section is the hardest to get rid of and I want it gone now and don't like the muffin top. I still work out and wanted/needed the extra push. Just purchased CLA last night and took 2 pills this morning. Will try the 4 a day, 2 in the morning and 2 at night. Let's see if this helps/works. Don't go by my rating as I just started.

Comments about GNC Total Lean™ CLA:

Conjugated Linoeic Acid is concentrated Safflower oil.
Long term use can assist with body sculpting, better arms butt, legs, thighs etc. Anything that has a muscle mass, has a fat mass as well. The goal is to get that nice lean look. Unfortunately it works slow, to the point many people give up. Don't. Just because YOU don't see the re4sults doesn't mean its not working.
Being an omega 6 also aids in proper blood lipid level and oxidation of the bad fats which cause higher amounts of LDL, the bad cholesterol.
Take this supplement with Garcinia Cambodgia or Green Coffee bean and its a nice combination.
Take CLA first thing in the morning before breakfast and after you last meal of the day. Up to 4 grams may be taken per day. Most CLA comes in softgels at 1000 mg per pill. Which equals 1 gram. Good luck.
BTW, only purchase CLA that is either certified Tonalin or Clarinol. Considered the highest grade and form of this omega 6.

OK people, it's been only two weeks and I can feel & see the difference. I did cut our most beer and wine. Since i've started using CLA, i've had only about 3 beers. I still lost 10pounds in TWO weeks! I cut out soda, still ate my three meals a day and small snacks. I have worked out 7 of the 14 days. I am 41yrs old (female), was 215, now 205 lbs. I will repost update in two more wks. GOOD LUCK!

I work out about 3 times a week and hitting 50 years old. I don't have a lot of fat to lose but just have trouble getting rid of the belly fat and my muffin tops. I thought these would help in getting rid of my stubborn belly and waist fat. Sadly I've been taking these for about a month and no results at all. Lastly, the bottle doesn't specify as to when to take them which is important to me.

Since I am in my 30's I needed to get back in shape. I worked out consistently in my 20's but slacked for the last couple years. Started working out about 6 months ago but didn't achieve the results I wanted until I added this product to my daily diet. I don't take the 4 pills daily. To hard on the stomach. But 1 in morning, 1 prior to workout and 1 with dinner works for me. I have been using it for a little over a month and finally got the results I had been looking for. I got back to the shape I was in during my 20's...
