Health Notes

Conjugated Linoleic Acid

Conjugated Linoleic Acid
This nutrient has been used in connection with the following health goals
  • Reliable and relatively consistent scientific data showing a substantial health benefit.
  • Contradictory, insufficient, or preliminary studies suggesting a health benefit or minimal health benefit.
  • For an herb, supported by traditional use but minimal or no scientific evidence. For a supplement, little scientific support.

Our proprietary "Star-Rating" system was developed to help you easily understand the amount of scientific support behind each supplement in relation to a specific health condition. While there is no way to predict whether a vitamin, mineral, or herb will successfully treat or prevent associated health conditions, our unique ratings tell you how well these supplements are understood by the medical community, and whether studies have found them to be effective for other people.

For over a decade, our team has combed through thousands of research articles published in reputable journals. To help you make educated decisions, and to better understand controversial or confusing supplements, our medical experts have digested the science into these three easy-to-follow ratings. We hope this provides you with a helpful resource to make informed decisions towards your health and well-being.

This supplement has been used in connection with the following health conditions:

Obesity
Dose: 3.2 to 4.2 grams daily
Though the evidence is conflicting, some studies have shown CLA to be effective at helping people lose body fat. (more)
Athletic Performance
Dose: Refer to label instructions
Conjugated linoleic acid may play a role in reducing body fat. Research has reported that CLA supplementation produces minor gains in muscle size and strength in weight-training men.(more)
Prostate Cancer
Dose: Refer to label instructions
Preliminary research suggests that CLA might reduce the risk of cancers at several sites, including breast, prostate, colorectal, lung, skin, and stomach.(more)
Breast Cancer
Dose: Refer to label instructions
Preliminary research suggests that CLA might reduce breast cancer risk.(more)
Obesity
Dose: 3.2 to 4.2 grams dailyA double-blind trial found that exercising individuals taking 1,800 mg per day of conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) lost more body fat after 12 weeks than did a similar group taking a placebo.1 However, two other studies found that amounts of CLA from 0.7 to 3.0 grams per day did not affect body composition.2, 3 Most double-blind trials have found that larger amounts of CLA, 3.2 to 4.2 grams per day, do reduce body fat;4, 5, 6, 7 however, one double-blind study of experienced strength-training athletes reported no effect of 6 grams per day of CLA on body fat, muscle mass, or strength improvement.8

Athletic Performance
Dose: Refer to label instructions

Conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) is a slightly altered form of the essential fatty acid linoleic acid. Animal research suggests an effect of CLA supplementation on reducing body fat.1, 2 Controlled human research has reported that 5.6 to 7.2 grams per day of CLA produces only non-significant gains in muscle size and strength in experienced and inexperienced weight-training men.3, 4, 5 A double-blind study of a group of trained men and women reported reduced body fat in the upper arm after 12 weeks of supplementation with 1.8 grams per day of CLA.6 Further research using more accurate techniques for measuring body composition is needed to confirm these findings.

Comments about GNC Total Lean™ Lean Shake™ BURN - Cookies & Cream:

It has great taste compared to other meal replacements. It taste like an oreo cookie milk shake smoothie. I found it easy to drink and stomach. I use a small cup blender to blend the shake. Using the blender will leave the shake smooth and creamy.
I bought this because I work a sales job and did not have much time eat healthy. I found myself grabbing quick snacks. I wanted to loose body fat so I asked a GNC worker about a good tasting food supplement, and he recommend this one.

Not only does it taste food, it's curves my appetite.

Taste best when blended with a blender is used.

Comments about GNC Total Lean™ Lean Shake™ BURN - Cookies & Cream:

I am a 23 year old female. I have been struggling with my weight and decided I finally needed to do something about it. I started taking this shake once a day with one scoop 30 minutes before a workout. I have to say I am very pleased weighing 155 pounds I am now down to 148 making a 7 lbs weightloss within two weeks. I am very happy with this product and cant wait to see my body transformation in another two weeks! This shake not only gives me energy to do my workouts, but it also tastes good and I find that I am not as hungry throughout the day. I would highly recommend this product to anyone! :)

Comments about GNC Total Lean™ Lean Shake™ BURN - Cookies & Cream:

Don't compare it to the regular Lean 25 meal replacement, it's different. It has good protein portion but has some downsides.

The peppery sweet taste is really bad (especially in the cookies & cream flavor).

The other thing is that it's relatively high in caffeine, therefore you need to be careful when mixing it with other stimulant pre-workouts.

General comment: I don't know why these products have to taste all this sweet! I'd prefer tasteless shakes rather than some artificial super sweet flavor. After some time all this sweetness becomes nauseating.

I'm a female 41, ride a desk 5 days a week/8hrs a day. I don't workout. I take my dogs to the beach and we play in the surf and go swimming. This product has made a chore much more enjoyable. I have the energy to keep up with 2 playful and energetic Rottweiler's. I can't wait to start incorporating more of the Lean line into my diet.

Comments about GNC Total Lean™ Lean Shake™ BURN - Cookies & Cream:

I love this protein powder. I bought it hoping it would be tasty, and give me a little boost of energy, and it meets both of my expectations. I'm 32/female and have a desk job. I drink it in the morning as breakfast most days, with a piece of fruit on the side. I was wary of purchasing due to price, but I'm used to spending more on other brands so it evened out. The cookies and cream is a wonderful, sweet vanilla flavor. I love to blend it with unsweetened coconut or almond milk, coffee, or coconut water. I hope GNC continues to make this product as it's a homerun in my book. The only hope I have is that it comes down in price by about $10.

I ordered this product due to the fact it had more protein than the Total Lean 25, thinking that it would be just as tasty. Not the case. I ordered both flavors and do not care for the taste of either one, even when blended as a smoothie.

Lean shake burn is like Lean Shake 25, but it has caffeine. If you take this as a meal replacement, be sure to workout with it. I do not recommend using it to just have a replacement meal, you will become insanely hyper. Pre workout preferably.
