Women's Prenatal Formula with DHAGNC Prenatal Formula with DHA is a premium multivitamin that provides nutritional support for both mother and baby before, during and after pregnancy. Pregnancy is a special time in a woman's life and an important time to be mindful not only of your individual nutritional needs of your baby as well. Maternal nutrition before and during pregnancy affects both your well-being and your infants growth. As your baby develops through the early phases of life, your nutritional needs will also increase. After delivery, you need an adequate diet rich in essential nutrients such as calcium and folic acid to support nursing and replace depleted nutrient stores. This delicately blended multivitamin with DHA offers supplemental nutritional support for both you and your baby.Nutritional Support
  • Supplies a balanced nutritional blend combining vitamins, mineral and antioxidants to supplement a healthy diet. Emerging research suggests that antioxidants can help protect the body from harmful free radicals that can destroy healthy cells.*
DHA
  • Features 500 mg of DHA, an important omega-3 fatty acid. DHA plays a vital role in supporting the healthy development of a fetus brain, eyes, and nervous system.
Folic Acid
  • Provides 1,000 mcg of folic acid, critical during the earliest weeks of pregnancy when a baby's organs are forming. Adequate intake of folic acid in a healthy diet before and during early pregnancy may reduce the risk of birth defects of the brain and spinal cord. Folic acid is also required for cell growth and DNA formation.*
Calcium & Bone Health
  • Features 600 mg of bone-strengthening calcium which is vital during pregnancy, especially during the third trimester when fetal bones begin to calcify. If a mother's calcium level drops, her body can pull calcium from her bones resulting in loss of bone density. Also includes 400 IU of vitamin D-3 to enhance calcium absorption.*
Iron
  • Includes iron to support placental and fetal needs and a mother's increased blood volume.*

DHA

DHA
This nutrient has been used in connection with the following health goals
  • Reliable and relatively consistent scientific data showing a substantial health benefit.
  • Contradictory, insufficient, or preliminary studies suggesting a health benefit or minimal health benefit.
  • For an herb, supported by traditional use but minimal or no scientific evidence. For a supplement, little scientific support.

Our proprietary "Star-Rating" system was developed to help you easily understand the amount of scientific support behind each supplement in relation to a specific health condition. While there is no way to predict whether a vitamin, mineral, or herb will successfully treat or prevent associated health conditions, our unique ratings tell you how well these supplements are understood by the medical community, and whether studies have found them to be effective for other people.

For over a decade, our team has combed through thousands of research articles published in reputable journals. To help you make educated decisions, and to better understand controversial or confusing supplements, our medical experts have digested the science into these three easy-to-follow ratings. We hope this provides you with a helpful resource to make informed decisions towards your health and well-being.

This supplement has been used in connection with the following health conditions:

Stress
Dose: 1.5 to 1.8 grams daily
Supplementing with omega-3 fatty acids, including DHA, may help improve responses to stress.(more)
Breast-Feeding Support
Dose: Consult a qualified healthcare practitioner
Studies have shown that higher breast milk concentrations of DHA (an omega-3 fatty acid present in cod liver oil) are associated with better visual acuity in infants.(more)
Childhood Intelligence
Dose: Refer to label instructions
(more)
Stress
Dose: 1.5 to 1.8 grams daily

Animal and human studies suggest that deficiencies of omega-3 fatty acids may contribute to behaviors associated with unhealthy responses to stress.1, 2 A double-blind study of students with a low dietary intake of DHA (docosahexaenoic acid, an omega-3 fatty acid) reported that taking 1.5 to 1.8 grams of DHA per day for three months prevented an increase in aggressiveness in these students during a stressful final exam period.3 This group of researchers reported in another double-blind study that 1.5 grams per day of DHA given to medical students during a stressful exam period resulted in changes in some, though not all, blood measurements indicating improved responses to stress.4

Breast-Feeding Support
Dose: Consult a qualified healthcare practitioner

Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), an omega-3 fatty acid present in cod liver oil and other fish oils, is important for normal development of the brain and eyes. Studies have shown that higher concentrations of DHA in mothers' milk are associated with better visual acuity in the infants.1 Other studies have suggested that DHA improves the development of infants, although not all research agrees.2 Because DHA in the mother's diet passes into the breast milk,3 some doctors advise nursing mothers to supplement their diet with cod liver oil or another fish-oil supplement. Women wishing to use this or any supplement while breast-feeding should consult their doctors and use only under the supervision of a qualified healthcare practitioner.

Childhood Intelligence
Dose: Refer to label instructionsDocosahexaenoic acid (DHA) plays an important role in the development of the fetal and infant brain. In a double-blind trial, pregnant women received 10 ml per day of cod liver oil (providing daily 1,183 mg per day of DHA) or a placebo (corn oil), beginning in week 18 of pregnancy and continuing until 3 months after delivery. All or nearly all of the children were breastfed at least until 3 months of age. Compared with the placebo group, the group receiving cod liver oil had significantly better scores at 4 years of age on a test that measures intelligence (the Mental Processing Composite of the Kaufman Assessment Battery for Children).1

Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), an omega-3 fatty acid, belongs to the class of nutrients called essential fatty acids.
