Health Notes

Rice Protein

Rice Protein
  • Reliable and relatively consistent scientific data showing a substantial health benefit.
  • Contradictory, insufficient, or preliminary studies suggesting a health benefit or minimal health benefit.
  • For an herb, supported by traditional use but minimal or no scientific evidence. For a supplement, little scientific support.

Our proprietary "Star-Rating" system was developed to help you easily understand the amount of scientific support behind each supplement in relation to a specific health condition. While there is no way to predict whether a vitamin, mineral, or herb will successfully treat or prevent associated health conditions, our unique ratings tell you how well these supplements are understood by the medical community, and whether studies have found them to be effective for other people.

For over a decade, our team has combed through thousands of research articles published in reputable journals. To help you make educated decisions, and to better understand controversial or confusing supplements, our medical experts have digested the science into these three easy-to-follow ratings. We hope this provides you with a helpful resource to make informed decisions towards your health and well-being.

This supplement has been used in connection with the following health conditions:

Used for AmountWhy
Atherosclerosis
Refer to label instructions 1 star[1 star]
Though not yet proven in clinical research, animal studies suggest that rice protein-based diets result in less buildup of atherosclerotic plaque compared with animal protein-based diets.
Athletic Performance
Refer to label instructions 1 star[1 star]
Some athletes believe rice protein may also improve blood flow to muscle to enhance growth and repair. However, no research has investigated the effects of rice protein on athletic performance.
Obesity
Refer to label instructions 1 star[1 star]
Dieters who are gluten or dairy sensitive and looking to supplement protein might consider rice protein, though its actual benefits for weight loss have not been studied.

Rice protein is extracted from rice and used in some protein supplements. Vegetarians may prefer it over protein supplements made from animal sources (such as whey or casein, which are milk proteins). Since rice is rarely involved in food allergies,1 rice protein may also be preferred by people with food allergies, and may be suitable to use in hypoallergenic infant formulas.2 Rice protein is not a complete protein, however, due to insufficient levels of the amino acids lysine and threonine.3, 4 Therefore, these amino acids are often added to rice protein products to correct this imbalance.

I bought this product online and saw this label,

"This product contains a chemical known to the State of California to cause birth defects or other reproductive harm."

I did not even open it up. I hope to get my money back. Who would put something like this into their body anyway ?

Comments about Jarrow Formulas® Brown Rice Protein Concentrate:

I ordered this hoping to get a good protein with no cholesterol. What I got was a product with the following warning on it - "WARNING: This product contains a chemical known to the State of California to cause birth defects or other reproductive harm." Really? Thanks GNC. I used your website to offer a little credibility. That's obviously lost.

I'm not sure who's comfortable with birth defects and reproductive harm, but it's not me. This product is a waste of money considering I'm not about to take something that's "known to cause reproductive harm".

Time to look for a new, credible supplement provider.

I can't tolerate whey or soy. This is a solid source of protein. I do a breakfast smoothie with this, fruit and keifer everyday, and it holds me until lunch. On its own it tastes like dirt, but mixed into the smoothie I don't taste it at all.

I like the value & that it's gluten and milk free. It doesn't mix all that well, but it's not terrible either. Don't mix it with water, it tastes awful that way. It works best for me when I use it instead of plain milk on cereal.

I bought this product a few months ago and used it occasionally on oatmeal it was not too good, but then I became vegan and cut out any dairy products like whey and was left with this to use for my post workouts and i gotta say its delicious. I blend it with coconut milk, frozen fruit, and ice and its so good. Im happy I can still get a great recovery shake after my workout that wont affect my diet.

Comments about Jarrow Formulas® Brown Rice Protein Concentrate:

First let me say I am 63 yr. old female. I am a small frame person and have just begun strength exercises 3 days a week. I am basically a vegetarian with rarely some fish and chicken/turkey in my diet. Thus I need a supplement of Protein just to meet my daily intake.I purchased this 4 days ago at a local GNC. I have tried the whey and soy. Neither agreed with me. Now I think I am lactose intolerant (possibly why I did not like the whey) and the soy, that is supposed to help hot flashes but it only appeared to make mine stronger.
This I found after research, as hopefully a better alternative to meet my daily needs without the whey and soy. I mix the rice protein in with a cup of rice milk and a ripened banana in my mini blender. It is not the greatest taste, as it tastes just a little bit chalky, but it is drinkable without gagging. I will stay with this as long as I feel good.
