Health Notes

Fructo-oligosaccharides (FOS) and Other Oligosaccharides

Fructo-oligosaccharides (FOS) and Other Oligosaccharides
This nutrient has been used in connection with the following health goals
  • Reliable and relatively consistent scientific data showing a substantial health benefit.
  • Contradictory, insufficient, or preliminary studies suggesting a health benefit or minimal health benefit.
  • For an herb, supported by traditional use but minimal or no scientific evidence. For a supplement, little scientific support.

Our proprietary "Star-Rating" system was developed to help you easily understand the amount of scientific support behind each supplement in relation to a specific health condition. While there is no way to predict whether a vitamin, mineral, or herb will successfully treat or prevent associated health conditions, our unique ratings tell you how well these supplements are understood by the medical community, and whether studies have found them to be effective for other people.

For over a decade, our team has combed through thousands of research articles published in reputable journals. To help you make educated decisions, and to better understand controversial or confusing supplements, our medical experts have digested the science into these three easy-to-follow ratings. We hope this provides you with a helpful resource to make informed decisions towards your health and well-being.

This supplement has been used in connection with the following health conditions:

High Triglycerides
Dose: 8 to 20 grams daily
Several trials have shown that FOS supplementation lowers triglycerides in people with elevated levels. (more)
Eczema
Dose: 90% galacto-oligosaccharides and 10% fructo-oligosaccharides mixture added daily to infant formula
In one study, adding a mixture of 90% galacto-oligosaccharides and 10% fructo-oligosaccharides to infant formula prevented the development of eczema in babies who were at high risk of developing eczema. (more)
Type 2 Diabetes
Dose: Refer to label instructions
In one trial, supplementing with fructo-oligosaccharides significantly lowered fasting blood-sugar levels and serum total-cholesterol levels in people with type 2 diabetes.(more)
Indigestion, Heartburn, and Low Stomach Acidity
Dose: 5 grams per day
Supplementing with fructo-oligosaccharides may help relieve abdominal discomfort, fullness, constipation, urgency, and diarrhea. (more)
Pre- and Post-Surgery Health
Dose: Refer to label instructions
Supplementing with fructo-oligosaccharides (FOS) appears to improve iron absorption and restore iron levels, which may be reduced after surgery.(more)
High Triglycerides
Dose: 8 to 20 grams daily

Several double-blind trials have evaluated the efficacy of fructo-oligosaccharides (FOS) or inulin (a related compound) for lowering blood cholesterol and triglyceride levels. These trials have shown that in individuals with elevated total cholesterol or triglyceride levels, including people with type 2 diabetes, FOS or inulin (in amounts ranging from 8 to 20 grams daily) produced significant reductions in triglyceride levels; however, the effect on cholesterol levels was inconsistent.1, 2, 3, 4 In people with normal or low cholesterol or triglyceride levels, FOS or inulin produced little effect.5, 6, 7

Eczema
Dose: 90% galacto-oligosaccharides and 10% fructo-oligosaccharides mixture added daily to infant formula

In a double-blind trial, the addition of a mixture of 90% galacto-oligosaccharides and 10% fructo-oligosaccharides to infant formula prevented the development of eczema in infants who were at high risk of developing eczema. The incidence of eczema in the first six months of life was 9.8% in the group receiving oligosaccharides, compared with 23.1% in the placebo group, a statistically significant difference. The product used in this study was designed to mimic the oligosaccharide content of human milk, and was added at a concentration of 0.8 grams per 100 ml.1

Type 2 Diabetes
Dose: Refer to label instructionsIn a preliminary trial, supplementation with fructo-oligosaccharides (FOS) (8 grams per day for two weeks) significantly lowered fasting blood-sugar levels and serum total-cholesterol levels in people with type 2 diabetes.1 However, in another trial, supplementing with FOS (15 grams per day) for 20 days had no effect on blood-glucose or lipid levels in people with type 2 diabetes.2 In addition, some double-blind trials showed that supplementing with FOS or galacto-oligosaccharides (GOS) for eight weeks had no effect on blood-sugar levels, insulin secretion, or blood lipids in healthy people.3, 4 Because of these conflicting results, more research is needed to determine the effect of FOS on diabetes and lipid levels.

Indigestion, Heartburn, and Low Stomach Acidity
Dose: 5 grams per day In a double-blind trial, supplementation with 5 grams of fructo-oligosaccharides per day for six weeks was significantly more effective than a placebo at relieving symptoms of dyspepsia such as such as abdominal discomfort, fullness, constipation, urgency, and diarrhea. The average symptom severity decreased by 44% in the group receiving fructo-oligosaccharides.1

Pre- and Post-Surgery Health
Dose: Refer to label instructions

One preliminary study found iron levels to be reduced after both minor and major surgeries, and iron supplementation prior to surgery was not able to prevent this reduction.1 A controlled trial found that intravenous iron was more effective than oral iron for restoring normal iron levels after spinal surgery in children.2 One animal study reported that supplementation with fructo-oligosaccharides (FOS) improved the absorption of iron and prevented anemia after surgery,3 but no human trials have been done to confirm this finding. Some researchers speculate that iron deficiency after a trauma such as surgery is an important mechanism for avoiding infection, and they suggest that iron supplements should not be given after surgery.4

The term "oligosaccharide" refers to a short chain of sugar molecules ("oligo" means "few" and "saccharide" means "sugar.") Fructo-oligosaccharides (FOS) and inulin, which are found in many vegetables, consist of short chains of fructose molecules. Galacto-oligosaccharides (GOS), which also occur naturally, consist of short chains of galactose molecules. These compounds can be only partially digested by humans.1, 2, 3, 4 When oligosaccharides are consumed, the undigested portion serves as food for "friendly" bacteria, such as Bifidobacteria and Lactobacillus species.

Comments about OBESITY RESEARCH Lipozene® (Amorphophallus konjac ) - 2 Bottle Bonus Pack:

the thing about thing pill which they state is not for people who only have a few pounds to lose and for people who are severely over weight... the reasoning behind this is because most people who are severely overweight also over eat... this means if they take this pill and they don't eat as much for even a few weeks are going to see a difference now if they start to exercise along with eating less and drinking more water they are going to have significant effects from taking this pill. now for people who aren't over eaters or addicted to eating so they are over stuffed this pill is not going to work. if you don't over eat then that is not your problem at all its the fact that you are simply not exercising to burn the amount of calories you are taking in so you have a little extra weight. all you need to do is exercise or change what you are actually putting in your mouth... as for the over eaters and food addicts this will help control your appetite make you feel full and with some exercise give you good results!

Comments about OBESITY RESEARCH Lipozene® (Amorphophallus konjac ) - 2 Bottle Bonus Pack:

These commercials bother me so much that I felt like I had to write a review on this product. First of all, my issue with this product is not with GNC, but with the Obesity Research Institute who makes it. I'm sure that if you are reading a review on this product you have probably seen the commercial with that annoying woman making unbelievable claims about this product. If you pay attention to what is actually being said though, Lipozene doesn't end up looking all that great.

The only ingredient in Lipozene is Amorphophallus Konjac, or as you will usually hear it called, Glucomannan or Konjac root. Konjac is an expanding fiber that when ingested expands in your stomach to make you feel fuller. This is not a bad thing because it can act as an appetite suppressant and help move waste through your body, but that is all it is capable of doing. Konjac does not speed up your metabolism or cause your body to burn more fat. Now, if you were to take this and it caused you to eat less, then you would be theoretically able to lose weight due to the calorie deficit (along with exercise). Now, the Obesity Research Institute would like you to believe that Lipozene "attacks" body fat. NO IT DOESN'T. As I stated above, Konjac has no direct effect on body fat. To say that it is directly targeting body fat is not just misleading, it is a flat out lie

These are my biggest problems with the product, which are repeated over and over again on their commercials. They say that Lipozene cause people to lose weight and of that weight 78% was pure body fat. Sounds good, but what was the other 22%? You could assume that some of it was probably water weight, but more than likely it would also include muscle. In case you didn't know, you do not want to lose muscle mass. The more muscle you have, the more fat you are able to burn. So this means that if you start to lose muscle mass, then you are going to be unable to burn fat as effectively.

The second issue is with the fine print on the commercial. It said that in their "double-blind, clinical study" participants lost on average 3.86 lbs. over the course of 8 weeks. Hmm, so 3.86 lbs divided by 8 weeks. That averages out to .48 lbs per week, or 7.68 oz. That really isn't that effective when diet and exercise alone can easily do more than that.

Finally, one bottle contains 30 pills. Just to help you feel full, you need to take 2 pills, 3x a day with meals. So you have to take 6 pills a day for it to be effective, which means that one bottle will give you 5 days worth. But you get a second bottle for free right? Awesome, so now you get 10 days worth instead of 5.

Simply put, do not waste your money on this. You can find similar products in the store that will do the same thing for less. For example, there is a GNC product called Chitosan w/Glucomannan. Like the Glucomannan(Konjac root), Chitosan is another fiber that expands in your stomach to help you feel full. This one gives you 120 servings (vs. 60 for Lipozene), and it is about 2 bucks less.

Walked past it on a sale rack and decided to give it a shot. This thing works like every other supplement out there..meaning you need to put in the work...it keeps you full much longer and doesn't bloat...I only take 2 before lunch and sometimes 2 before dinner...i also run 8-10kms at least 3 times a week and eat clean 80% of the time...and have lost about 30lbs since January...so if this isn't working for you, then you're doing it wrong!!...u can't just take this and sit on the couch eating fried chicken!...true story!

Comments about OBESITY RESEARCH Lipozene® (Amorphophallus konjac ) - 2 Bottle Bonus Pack:

The TV ads claim a 30 capsule bottle of Amorphophallus Konjac fiber is a one month supply.
The lable says to take two capsules 30 minutes before each meal, meaning the 30 capsule bottle is a 5-day supply rather than a one month supply.
I will take a wait-and-see attitude as to whether this product is effective, but as I begin, I question whether this product is more effective than taking any other fiber suppliment (such as psyllium) before meals.
The main benifits appear to be 1) the product swells when you drink water, making you feel fuller before you begin eating, and 2) being a non-digested fiber laxative, it 'sweeps the intestines clean'.
With the product costing $3 per day when used as directed, Metamucil may be a much cheaper alternative...
Also, the recommendation that you not take vitamins or medications for two hours before or after using the product means you can not take medications or vitamins with your meals.
