  • Contains key minerals such as zinc and chromium that are involved in carbohydrate metabolism and glucose utilization.*
Digestive Support
  • Includes 5 grams of dietary fiber. Fiber serves as a bulk forming agent and encourages colon health by helping to speed food throughout the digestive system.* Fiber also plays an important role in cleansing.*
Eye Health
  • Contains vitamin A, astaxanthin, zeaxanthin and lutein for eye health and normal vision.*
Immune Protection
  • Features vitamin C and zinc to boost your body's natural immune response.*

Multivitamins May Protect Men Against Cancer

Multivitamins May Protect Men Against Cancer
Multivitamins May Protect Men Against?Cancer?
: Main Image
Men taking the multivitamin were diagnosed with 8% fewer cancers overall
Many Westerners are concerned that they may not be getting all the nutrients they need everyday for optimal health, which has made multivitamins a popular choice for many people. Study results on multivitamins often conflict, with some showing benefits, and others finding either no benefit or even potential harm. Now, much-anticipated results from a large, randomized, controlled trial of multivitamins have been released, and this one falls on the side of benefit, showing a modest but significant decrease in cancer occurrence for men who take a basic, daily multivitamin.

The ideal study population

Researchers randomly selected 14,641 male physicians to receive a daily multivitamin-mineral supplement or placebo for approximately 11 years. The physicians were 50 years or older, and 9% had a previous history of cancer. Other factors, including age, height and weight, tobacco and alcohol use, diet, other medications, and family history of cancer were similar in the supplement and placebo groups.

The multivitamin provided around 100% of the daily value for most essential vitamins and minerals, with a few exceptions. It contained no iron, and for vitamins E and B12, the multivitamin provided significantly more than 100% of the daily value. For vitamin K, biotin, calcium, magnesium, and chromium, it provided significantly less than 100%. The supplement contained some additional nutrients, including lutein and lycopene.

Moderate multivitamin, less total cancer

Men taking the multivitamin were diagnosed with 8% fewer cancers overall than men in the placebo group.

There were no significant differences between the supplement and placebo groups in terms of specific cancer types, such as prostate and colorectal cancers. There were no significant differences in the risk of death due to cancer between the two groups.

Finding balance

The study multivitamin was similar to "common," moderate-dose products available in any supermarket or pharmacy. Given that past studies have suggested multivitamins may increase cancer risk, these findings are reassuring. However, according to lead study author Dr. J. Michael Gaziano, "It would be a big mistake for people to go out and take a multivitamin instead of quitting smoking or doing other things that we have a higher suspicion play a bigger role, like eating a good diet and getting exercise."

Keep this in mind as you consider our tips on creating your own cancer risk reduction plan:

  • Be modest. Steer clear of mega-doses, and follow the American Cancer Society's advice: eat a balanced diet, and if you take a supplement, choose a balanced multivitamin that contains no more than 100% of the daily value of most nutrients.
  • Seek the experts. A person's diet may get out of balance for a variety of reasons, such as illness, nutrient depletion or malabsorption caused by a drug, medical condition, food intolerance, or allergy. If this describes you, discuss your diet with your doctor or dietitian to identify specific nutrients that may be missing.
  • Consider context. The study population was healthy, older males, most of whom don't smoke, and many of whom eat a balanced diet and exercise regularly. If you smoke, are obese, or have additional risk factors for cancer, heart disease, or other chronic disease, these findings may not apply to you.
  • Get bang for your buck. Regardless of whether you take a multivitamin, you can never go wrong by adopting basic cancer prevention strategies: avoid tobacco, drink alcohol modestly or not at all, move regularly, eat plenty of vegetables and fruit, use sunscreen consistently, and maintain a healthy body weight.

Comments about GNC Mega Men® Maximum Nutrition - Milk Chocolate:

My husband was suffering from HCV treatment for 4 mo. and has cirrhosis of the liver. He had no appetite and lost so much weight and muscles to the point he looks anorexic. It looked like his body was eating itself. It hurt his stomach to eat and was bloating from the illness. He was in ER couple of times but they had no solution, except to stick with the regular prescription. It was scary as his appt. for the USC SW Liver Clinic in Dallas is middle of December. I was afraid of losing him.

I started him on this program 10/28/13 with "GNC Mega Men Maximum Nutrition" as advised by the local GNC Rep. I mixed one drink, put in a jug in the refrigerator as he could only consume 1 cup at a time. I shake the jug and poured a cup in a mini-blender so the texture would be smooth.

I noticed he was acting more like his normal self in the past few days, playful with me and was able to eat a little more food. Last night and this morning, he was able to drink 2 cups at a time. This morning,(7th day)he was back to being a clown and said this drink must be working. He was able to go to work in the last three days. Last night I added acidophilus to his shake, rather than argue with him to take it orally.

I am so encouraged and happy even though I know this will still be a slow process with his stage of illness. I look forward to when he can drink two full drinks daily for weight gain and to be able to exercise to rebuild muscles plus eat normal, not baby, meals. Thank you!

this is the worst thing i have ever tasted in my mouth!!! I've tried straight up I've tried with protein and nothing covers it! aside from that the vitamins in it are so great id personally down some pills but ill use this up first it call for 2 scoops but the amounts of vitamins are massive and i had to go to one scoop because that much vitamin would make me have nausea from not ever consuming that much at once

Comments about GNC Mega Men® Maximum Nutrition - Milk Chocolate:

I use this first thing in the morning mixed in with a daily protein drink of about 25gms. There isn't much fiber in this and fiber is so cheap and easy to add, I'm not sure why it has so little. The taste is your basic if not nondescript chocolate (I've also tried the vanilla which is like eating powdered cake mix, too strong) but passable. The flavor of my Muscle Milk covers it up pretty much anyway. Good vitamin mix and fruit/veggie composition. I would love to see GNC make a meal replacement version of this mix with more fiber/protein.
