Can Diet Prevent ALS?
Can Diet Prevent ALS?
Risk of developing ALS decreased 25% in people consuming the highest amount of carotenoidsEating more brightly colored fruits and vegetables might help prevent or delay the onset of ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis), a progressive neurodegenerative disorder commonly known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. What is ALS?
ALS affects the nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord that control movement. Over time these nerve cells die, leading to an inability of the brain to initiate and control muscle movement. Eventually, the disease may lead to total paralysis and is nearly always fatal. ALS usually doesn't affect intelligence, and people with advanced ALS can still control their eye movements as well as bladder and bowel function.
Colorful help for ALS
Several studies have suggested that oxidative stress-damage caused by unstable compounds called free radicals-contributes to ALS. Some studies have shown that high-dose vitamin C, a powerful antioxidant, can slow the progression of ALS in animals with the hereditary form of the disease.
According to the study published in Annals of Neurology, to see what effect antioxidant carotenoids and vitamin C had on the risk of developing ALS, researchers pooled the results of five different studies including the National Institutes of Health-AARP Diet and Health Study, the Cancer Prevention Study II-Nutrition Cohort, the Multiethnic Cohort, the Health Professionals Follow-up Study, and the Nurses' Health Study. Information from more than one million people was included in the study. Of these, 1,153 people died from ALS.
- Risk of developing ALS decreased 25% in people consuming the highest amount of carotenoids compared with those consuming the least.
- Risk of developing ALS was 21% lower for those with higher dietary lutein intake, and 15% lower for those with higher beta-carotene intake.
- Vitamin C and other carotenoids, including lycopene and beta-cryptoxanthin, didn't seem to affect ALS risk.
"ALS is a devastating degenerative disease that generally develops between the ages of 40 and 70, and affects more men than women," said senior study author Dr. Alberto Ascherio, Professor of Epidemiology and Nutrition at Harvard School of Public Health in Boston. "Understanding the impact of food consumption on ALS development is important. Our study is one of the largest to date to examine the role of dietary antioxidants in preventing ALS."

Lutein is found in many vegetables, including kale, collard greens, corn, romaine lettuce, turnip greens, spinach, Brussels sprouts, and zucchini. Egg yolks are another rich source.
Beta-carotene is found in sweet potatoes, spinach, broccoli, cantaloupe, winter squash, cilantro, and other dark leafy greens.
"Our findings suggest that consuming carotenoid-rich foods may help prevent or delay the onset of ALS," concluded Dr. Ascherio. "Further food-based analyses are needed to examine the impact of dietary nutrients on ALS."

Comments about truDERMA® Mangodrin™:
I'm really sensitive to any supplements/medicines and have tried quite a few. This product gave me the right energy and did make me lose the weight I wanted in a healthy timefram. Lost 25lbs so far, only 10 more to go. And I only used 1 capsule a day so I can imagine 2 a day as instructed would probably make me lose more/quickly? I rarely workout but these do get me going to where I do get motivation to workout.

Comments about truDERMA® Mangodrin™:
The product is decently priced in comparison to others..... But amazingly priced for how good it is. Within 3.5 months I have lost 46 pounds! I do go to the gym, but I don't no nothing major I still eat junk food, etc.... I received a trial from gnc, and liked it the side effects at first was headaches after day 3 they went away.... So I bought a bottle, and the weight started dropping off. Once the bottle finished I tried stacker 3 in which was wonderful for energy, but I lost no weight I only held my weight at a stand still. So I am once again back on mangodrin with stimulants and I am back to dropping weight & having amazing energy!!!! :) I absolutely live this product!

Comments about truDERMA® Mangodrin™:
I started taking this product exactly AS DIRECTED, 12 days ago and have already lost 12.2 lbs. I usually feel the need to eat often and this suppresses my appetite so good without any weird side effects. I have tried numerous products to help curb my appetite and nothing has worked until now. I only walk about 30 mins 4-5 days a week so I don't have a major workout routine to account my weight loss for. I have read bad reviews about this product not working, but I'm glad it does for me!

Comments about truDERMA® Mangodrin™:
This was reccommended by a person working at GNC. Maybe they didn't understand me when I said I needed something for appetite control. I still eat the same amount - in other words I'm still hungry all the time. The only way this product would be worth it is if it was free because it does absolutely nothing. Doesn't even give me an energy burst. I"d like to meet the people this is supposedly working for because I must be immune to it.

Comments about truDERMA® Mangodrin™:
This product has worked great for me so far and today is my fourth day on it. I have a desk job and am not very active but I have made it a point to try to stay more active since I've been on this. My active is walking for the most part and jumping jacks so nothing crazy. I also have been eating healthy. Special K Cereal, Eggs, whole grain rice, oatmeal, lean turkey, fruits, veggies, salad, and chicken mostly. I lost 1 pound the first day, a half pound the second day, and another pound the 3rd day. I was surprised on the third day that I still lost a pound because I did not do any exercise and went out for Mecixan for dinner. (shows me the pill really is doing something) I also drink tons of water- about 5 bottles a day. This has not given me the jittery feeling but I did have heartburn the first day but not since then. I feel energy but not to the point that I can't do my work. I can't wait to see where I'm at when I finish my first bottle!
