Health Notes

DHA

DHA
This nutrient has been used in connection with the following health goals
  • Reliable and relatively consistent scientific data showing a substantial health benefit.
  • Contradictory, insufficient, or preliminary studies suggesting a health benefit or minimal health benefit.
  • For an herb, supported by traditional use but minimal or no scientific evidence. For a supplement, little scientific support.

Our proprietary "Star-Rating" system was developed to help you easily understand the amount of scientific support behind each supplement in relation to a specific health condition. While there is no way to predict whether a vitamin, mineral, or herb will successfully treat or prevent associated health conditions, our unique ratings tell you how well these supplements are understood by the medical community, and whether studies have found them to be effective for other people.

For over a decade, our team has combed through thousands of research articles published in reputable journals. To help you make educated decisions, and to better understand controversial or confusing supplements, our medical experts have digested the science into these three easy-to-follow ratings. We hope this provides you with a helpful resource to make informed decisions towards your health and well-being.

This supplement has been used in connection with the following health conditions:

Stress
Dose: 1.5 to 1.8 grams daily
Supplementing with omega-3 fatty acids, including DHA, may help improve responses to stress.(more)
Breast-Feeding Support
Dose: Consult a qualified healthcare practitioner
Studies have shown that higher breast milk concentrations of DHA (an omega-3 fatty acid present in cod liver oil) are associated with better visual acuity in infants.(more)
Childhood Intelligence
Dose: Refer to label instructions
(more)
Stress
Dose: 1.5 to 1.8 grams daily

Animal and human studies suggest that deficiencies of omega-3 fatty acids may contribute to behaviors associated with unhealthy responses to stress.1, 2 A double-blind study of students with a low dietary intake of DHA (docosahexaenoic acid, an omega-3 fatty acid) reported that taking 1.5 to 1.8 grams of DHA per day for three months prevented an increase in aggressiveness in these students during a stressful final exam period.3 This group of researchers reported in another double-blind study that 1.5 grams per day of DHA given to medical students during a stressful exam period resulted in changes in some, though not all, blood measurements indicating improved responses to stress.4

Breast-Feeding Support
Dose: Consult a qualified healthcare practitioner

Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), an omega-3 fatty acid present in cod liver oil and other fish oils, is important for normal development of the brain and eyes. Studies have shown that higher concentrations of DHA in mothers' milk are associated with better visual acuity in the infants.1 Other studies have suggested that DHA improves the development of infants, although not all research agrees.2 Because DHA in the mother's diet passes into the breast milk,3 some doctors advise nursing mothers to supplement their diet with cod liver oil or another fish-oil supplement. Women wishing to use this or any supplement while breast-feeding should consult their doctors and use only under the supervision of a qualified healthcare practitioner.

Childhood Intelligence
Dose: Refer to label instructionsDocosahexaenoic acid (DHA) plays an important role in the development of the fetal and infant brain. In a double-blind trial, pregnant women received 10 ml per day of cod liver oil (providing daily 1,183 mg per day of DHA) or a placebo (corn oil), beginning in week 18 of pregnancy and continuing until 3 months after delivery. All or nearly all of the children were breastfed at least until 3 months of age. Compared with the placebo group, the group receiving cod liver oil had significantly better scores at 4 years of age on a test that measures intelligence (the Mental Processing Composite of the Kaufman Assessment Battery for Children).1

Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), an omega-3 fatty acid, belongs to the class of nutrients called essential fatty acids.

      Comments about GNC DHA 600:

My husband and I have been taking DHA 600 for about one year. We started this product because Dr Oz was asked on one program if he could only take one supplement per day which one would it be. He said he would take DHA 600mg. So, we started. I do not know if I am aware of any changes but hopefully it is helping our brains survive into the future. The only thing I do not like is we got one bottle with a leaking capsule. Each capsule in the bottle was coated in oil and the medicine cabinet smelled like fish. Other than that one bottle we have been well satisfied.

      Comments about GNC DHA 600:

I assume the pills are effective for brain health but I cannot put them in daily vitamin container or anything because oil leaks everywhere every time and containers have to be washed. This is my 3rd bottle and all 3 bottles have been oily inside--I assume because some have leaked or they all leak a little. It is enough to make me stop using these and look elsewhere even though the higher DHA is suppose to promote brain health (Of which I have no problem with now). I'd like to know there are efforts to correct this.

        Comments about GNC DHA 600:

I started to take GNC health products because they are high quality and are easy to access. In 2008 I had brain injury and lost alot of memory, since then I have switched to natural supplements such as...progeterone cream, vitamin B complexes, green tea products, and vitamin C for optimal health, brain health, and recovery. It hasn't been studied why I have had such a good recovery but Thank Goodness for GNC. Yes, I feel much more efficient and active during day, also helps mood and sleep+++

This product is excellent for RAW fed dogs and cats. Omega 3's are essential for good health in animals. The maintenance dose for a dog is 100mg per 10 pounds. I provide my APBT with a therapeutic dose of 300mg per 10 pounds. If your dog or cat has hot spots or gets very itchy, fish body oil is a natural anti-inflammatory, and it has helped stop my APBT from itchy feet and skin.

I've been taking it for over a month... I would definitely recommend it. The body needs 600 DHA per day so this is good stuff. This helps with brain function and a friend of mine had high cholesterol and brought it down significantly with Omega 3.
