Fuel your body more effectively, and get the most from your workouts
Do you ever feel you're slogging through your workouts, barely able to complete what you've planned, and anxious to hit the showers? Or maybe you've wondered how you might take the next step, fuel your body more effectively, and get the most "bang for your buck" from your workouts. Either way, a great place to start is with the basics, and one of the most basic nutrients for optimal athletic performance is protein.

The A, B, Cs of protein and performance

Muscles are made of protein, so it's no surprise that protein is vital to enhancing their performance. Knowing what type, how much, and when to fit protein into your daily routine is the key to getting the most from this important nutrient.

Protein particulars

"Wheying" your options

For repairing hardworking muscles after a cardio or resistance training ("weight lifting") workout, nothing beats whey protein. Whey comes from dairy and allows your muscles to refuel effectively. Whey protein is found in powder form and comes in a variety of flavors, making it easy to incorporate into your diet. It can be stirred into yogurt, added to a smoothie, or mixed vigorously with water or another liquid in a lidded container.

The body best absorbs protein when eaten in amounts ranging from 15 to 30 grams in a single meal or snack. Unless you're a serious body-builder, there's no benefit to eating more than 30 grams of protein at one time.

Whey protein makes its way into muscles most efficiently when taken immediately after a workout, ideally within 30 minutes. Eating whey with carbohydrates promotes the movement of the protein from your bloodstream into your muscles as well. Aim for a ratio of 1 gram of protein for every 2 to 4 grams of carbohydrate.

As an example, combine whey powder to provide about 15 grams of protein in a blender with a banana, ice, and water. A large banana adds around 30 grams of carbohydrate and most whey powders contain a bit of carbohydrate as well. This gives you a finished smoothie with 2 to 3 grams of carbohydrate for every gram of protein-an ideal ratio.

HMB power

Amino acids are needed to build the various proteins used in the growth, repair, and maintenance of body tissues. Hydroxy-methyl butyrate, or HMB, is a breakdown product of leucine, of of the essential amino acids that are used as building blocks of protein. Studies have shown that HMB can improve strength and help the body maintain muscle mass. Ideally, HMB is used in conjunction with strength training to obtain the most benefit; it is not used to improve cardiovascular athletic performance.

Our bodies can make some HMB, but it isn't found in significant amounts in most foods, so taking a supplement is the best way to get enough HMB to enhance a resistance training routine.

The optimal amount of HMB is about 3 grams per day, but there isn't agreement on when to take it for best benefit. In order to avoid having HMB "compete" for absorption with whey protein, try taking this supplement in the morning, at bedtime, or about 15 to 30 minutes before a workout.

Final protein pointers

Be sure you're eating a good quality, well-balanced diet with plenty of vegetables, fruit, legumes (beans), and whole grains. Without these essential foods, all the whey protein and HMB in the world isn't going to do you any good. Think about creating a nutrient network in your body; they don't work well in isolation.

Also keep in mind that while whey and HMB are considered safe for most people, there are some who should not use these supplements, including people with impaired kidney or liver function. If you have questions about whether whey and HMB are safe for you, ask your doctor or pharmacist for guidance.

Comments about GNC Total Lean™ Lean Shake™ 25 - Banana:

I was hesitant to try a banana flavored shake, but after reading the reviews here, decided to give it a try and I am so glad I did. I just mixed mine in a blender bottle with equal parts water and unsweetened almond milk. I'm thinking a half scoop with some walnuts would be great in pancakes too. So glad I took a chance and got this!

Comments about GNC Total Lean™ Lean Shake™ 25 - Banana:

I was looking for a meal replacement shake to incorporate into my diet and wanted one that wouldn't taste chalky or bland. This shake is actually pretty tasty. I mix one and a half scoop with almond milk and water (equal parts) and its not too thick nor does it taste watery. It does actually taste like a banana shake. I sometimes mix it with my chocolate whey protein shake for my post-workout supplement/meal replacement. Once I run out I will either repurchase the same flavor or try a different one. The only reason I did not give it a 5 is because I do not believe in perfect products but all in all I would recommend this shake to anyone who is looking for a delicious meal replacement.

I was paying $60+ more for a 30-day supply and the taste can't compare. I know that some of the ingredients are not the same but the taste can't compare. I feel full for at least 4 hours and look forward to the banana taste- its delicious! I highly recommend this product and I will be continuing to use it every morning for my meal replacement. Can't beat paying a small amt for the membership and saving for the whole year either! Just mix it with Original Almond Milk or Unsweetend Almond milk and you're on your way. It's even good mixed with water. YUM!

I absolutely love the banana flavor! Best one I've tasted so far. I do 2 scoops with 12 fl oz of silk light soy milk and it taste like a banana smoothie. I use the banana after my workout because it's not as rich and heavy as other flavors and it's easier for me to stomach. This is definitely my new favorite protein shake!

Comments about GNC Total Lean™ Lean Shake™ 25 - Banana:

First time trying out total lean and since I love bananas I thought I'd give this one a try. It's pretty good, reminds me of the banana Runts candy. It leaves me full and I have noticed some tummy shrinkage though the scale hasn't budged. Mind you I've only been on the diet for a couple of weeks and really only need to lose about 15-20 pounds before I'm happy.
I work shift work and have struggled with weight gain thanks to the late night MickyD's runs, and everything else that comes along with working 12 hour nights, stress = weight-gain for me. I've got the powder mixes to prepare before I head into work since even if I'm in a big time rush to leave the house I can shake it on the drive in. I also bought the already mixed bottles to throw in my lunch box for my final meal of the day prior to the drive home.
In addition to the two shakes as meal replacements I'll usually make sure to have a greek yogurt and at least one real meal per day. This has kept me from gaining since starting the nights this rotation, but again, no loss in pounds yet, but I'm able to fully secure my pants and still breathe :)
Good luck to all on the total lean challenge, again the banana is good but not great if you're looking for a real banana taste. Think banana runt not fresh banana ( I do enjoy the vanilla 25 very much, no funny protein taste that you find with other protein drinks).

Comments about GNC Total Lean™ Lean Shake™ 25 - Banana:

Ive tried most flavors of the GNC shakes, but this one is right at the top of the list. I even had no problem drinking this same flavor everyday for two weeks straight. It tastes just like the banana flavored Laffy Taffy. To enhance the flavor and thicken the shake without adding too many unecessary calories, I use half unsweetened almond milk and half water. I also only need to use 1-1.5 scoops of mix instead of the suggested serving size of two scoops, which still tastes good and makes it last a little longer. I drink one of these in the morning and have no problem lasting till lunch time before Im hungry again, even my husband cant believe how full it makes him feel :) By using these GNC shakes and OxyElite pills, Ive lost 20lbs in about two months with only 3hrs of workingout a week, and thats saying something because my metabolism is slooooooooow.
