Can Diet Prevent ALS?

Can Diet Prevent ALS?
Can Diet Prevent ALS?: Main Image
Risk of developing ALS decreased 25% in people consuming the highest amount of carotenoids
Eating more brightly colored fruits and vegetables might help prevent or delay the onset of ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis), a progressive neurodegenerative disorder commonly known as Lou Gehrig’s disease.

What is ALS?

ALS affects the nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord that control movement. Over time these nerve cells die, leading to an inability of the brain to initiate and control muscle movement. Eventually, the disease may lead to total paralysis and is nearly always fatal. ALS usually doesn't affect intelligence, and people with advanced ALS can still control their eye movements as well as bladder and bowel function.

Colorful help for ALS

Several studies have suggested that oxidative stress-damage caused by unstable compounds called free radicals-contributes to ALS. Some studies have shown that high-dose vitamin C, a powerful antioxidant, can slow the progression of ALS in animals with the hereditary form of the disease.

According to the study published in Annals of Neurology, to see what effect antioxidant carotenoids and vitamin C had on the risk of developing ALS, researchers pooled the results of five different studies including the National Institutes of Health-AARP Diet and Health Study, the Cancer Prevention Study II-Nutrition Cohort, the Multiethnic Cohort, the Health Professionals Follow-up Study, and the Nurses' Health Study. Information from more than one million people was included in the study. Of these, 1,153 people died from ALS.

  • Risk of developing ALS decreased 25% in people consuming the highest amount of carotenoids compared with those consuming the least.
  • Risk of developing ALS was 21% lower for those with higher dietary lutein intake, and 15% lower for those with higher beta-carotene intake.
  • Vitamin C and other carotenoids, including lycopene and beta-cryptoxanthin, didn't seem to affect ALS risk.

"ALS is a devastating degenerative disease that generally develops between the ages of 40 and 70, and affects more men than women," said senior study author Dr. Alberto Ascherio, Professor of Epidemiology and Nutrition at Harvard School of Public Health in Boston. "Understanding the impact of food consumption on ALS development is important. Our study is one of the largest to date to examine the role of dietary antioxidants in preventing ALS."

Lutein is found in many vegetables, including kale, collard greens, corn, romaine lettuce, turnip greens, spinach, Brussels sprouts, and zucchini. Egg yolks are another rich source.

Beta-carotene is found in sweet potatoes, spinach, broccoli, cantaloupe, winter squash, cilantro, and other dark leafy greens.

"Our findings suggest that consuming carotenoid-rich foods may help prevent or delay the onset of ALS," concluded Dr. Ascherio. "Further food-based analyses are needed to examine the impact of dietary nutrients on ALS."

The fist 3 days were ok; I had energy, good mood and it controlled my apppetite, but after the third day taking them my head begin to hurt, I was nauseous and felt overdosed (I tried taking them before eating or after but still got the same feeling). Therefore if you are too sensitive with caffeine I do not recommend this product otherwise experience caffeine overdose!

I do like this product, however, I don't like taking 6 pills a day that are pretty hard to swallow. As far as the effects, it works well. It does control appetite, and I'm not drowsy or yawning the whole day. I even have a little more mental focus, which I guess is what is in the mood booster. Do not take on an empty stomach though.

Comments about GNC Total Lean™ Live Lean & Fit Pak Dietary Supplement:

Some of your money is wasted given that the multi-vitamin has a dosage of 2 pills and gives you way more than 100% of many vitamins. I think that if you only take 1 vitamin (instead of 2) and eat vegetables with your meals, you will be getting enough nutrients.

I am weirded out by the amount of B6. In the whole pack taken as directed, you are getting 3850% the amount of Vitamin B-6 that you need per day. That's 77 mg, approaching the upper limit of what is considered safe (100 mg). From NiH: "Taking high levels of vitamin B6 from supplements for a year or longer can cause severe nerve damage, leading people to lose control of their bodily movements. The symptoms usually stop when they stop taking the supplements. Other symptoms of too much vitamin B6 include painful, unsightly skin patches, extreme sensitivity to sunlight, nausea, and heartburn."

After 1 week, I do feel slimmer probably from the water pill, and less tired probably due to the vitamins & iron. I used to drink 2 cups of coffee a day and still feel fatigued. Now I don't drink it at all because the Appetrex says it contains about 2 coffee's worth of caffeine and I don't want to overload on caffeine. It definitely works to help feel less hungry.

I have been using this for two weeks. I have noticed increased energy and decreased appetite. I am still eating the same things I ate before but less of it, and exercising the same amount as before. I've lost 8 pounds.
I have trouble swallowing the pills, expecially the vitamins. They taste terrible.

I have been taking this product for a month now and I must say I have lost 7 pounds taking this product. I no longer look to snacks because I am full. I do not always eat correctly but I still managed to lose 7 pounds. I can only imagine how many more pounds I can lose if I ate healthy everyday like it recommends.

Have been using this product for a few months now and I still love it! I swim several days a week, eat healthy, and get plenty of rest but these vitamins helped me over a plateau in my fitness not to mention the awesome effect the mood balancer has on me! I will continue to take them and have already given samples to several friends and family. The few people who have had a negative experience were just that, a few people. Worth a try!!

I was informed that taking these as a daily supplement would help with bloating.. cut back on calorie intake.. help with my mood support .. give me more energy etc etc. Did nothing but make me BLOATED even more and feel very heavy. Obviously the 6 vitamin intakes I am consuming is working negatively against me and my body. No result in energy or mood. Taking these packets every morning with vitamin b12 and coconut oil. I do not eat excessive or bad foods. And drink nothing but water, tea and black coffee. The pack must be too heavy for me to consume. Very disappointed, was looking foward to these as oppose to what I used to take which was Abdominal Cut. Giving it one more week then returning the item.

I tried this pak after an 8 week run on the Ripped Pak, and I'd have to say it works very well. It did help reduce my appetite as advertised, and it also increased my energy levels. The water pill also helped me stay tight and lean. I was stacking this with the Amp Wheybolic Extreme 60 protein, and I noticed a significant decrease in bodyfat. Good stuff!
