Health Notes

Whey Protein

Whey Protein
This nutrient has been used in connection with the following health goals
  • Reliable and relatively consistent scientific data showing a substantial health benefit.
  • Contradictory, insufficient, or preliminary studies suggesting a health benefit or minimal health benefit.
  • For an herb, supported by traditional use but minimal or no scientific evidence. For a supplement, little scientific support.

Our proprietary "Star-Rating" system was developed to help you easily understand the amount of scientific support behind each supplement in relation to a specific health condition. While there is no way to predict whether a vitamin, mineral, or herb will successfully treat or prevent associated health conditions, our unique ratings tell you how well these supplements are understood by the medical community, and whether studies have found them to be effective for other people.

For over a decade, our team has combed through thousands of research articles published in reputable journals. To help you make educated decisions, and to better understand controversial or confusing supplements, our medical experts have digested the science into these three easy-to-follow ratings. We hope this provides you with a helpful resource to make informed decisions towards your health and well-being.

This supplement has been used in connection with the following health conditions:

Athletic Performance
Dose: 20 grams daily up to 1.2 grams of per 2.2 of pounds body weight per day

Animal studies suggest that whey protein can increase gains in lean body mass resulting from exercise.1 A controlled trial found that six weeks of strength training while taking 1.2 grams of whey protein per 2.2 of pounds body weight per day resulted in greater gains in lean body mass, but improved only one out of four strength tests.2 Another controlled study found that people taking 20 grams per day of whey protein for three months performed better on a test of short-term intense cycling exercise than people taking a similar amount of milk protein (casein).3 However, a double-blind trial found that men taking 1.5 grams per 2.2 lbs of body weight per day of predigested whey protein for 12 weeks along with a strength training exercise program gained only half as much lean body mass and had significantly smaller increases in strength compared with men using a similar amount of predigested casein along with strength training.4 A controlled study of HIV-infected women found that adding whey protein to strength training exercise was no more effective than exercise alone for increasing strength or improving body composition.5

Osteoporosis
Dose: Refer to label instructions

Some whey proteins may reduce bone loss.1 Milk basic protein (MBP) is a mixture of some of the proteins found in whey protein. A preliminary trial found that 300 mg per day of MBP improved blood measures of bone metabolism in men, suggesting more bone formation was occurring than bone loss.2 A double-blind trial found that women taking 40 mg per day of MBP for six months had greater gains in bone density compared with those taking a placebo.3 No osteoporosis-related research has been done using complete whey protein mixtures.

Obesity
Dose: Refer to label instructions

Whey protein may aid weight loss due to its effect on appetite. In a preliminary study, people were given 48 grams of either whey protein or milk protein (casein). Whey consumption resulted in more hunger satisfaction and reduced the amount of food eaten 90 minutes later compared with casein consumption.1 However, a double-blind study found that men taking 1.5 grams per 2.2 lbs body weight per day of whey protein for 12 weeks along with a low-calorie diet and a strength training exercise program lost the same amount of weight and body fat as did a control group that followed a similar program, but took a casein supplement instead of whey protein.2

Whey protein is a mixture of some of the proteins naturally found in milk. The major proteins found in whey protein include beta-lactoglobulin and alpha-lactalbumin. Whey protein has one of the highest protein digestibility-corrected amino acid scores (PDCAAS; a measure of protein bioavailability) and is more rapidly digested than other proteins, such as casein (another milk protein). 1

I know there are many griping about the taste, give it a couple days of use and you will either get used to it or actually like it. I actually like it!! I mix it 1 scoop with 1/2 scoop of vanilla whey pre workout, 1 scoop with 1 scoop vanilla whey post work out and a full serve 2 scoops with 2 scoops of vanilla whey before bed. I love it!!!! 8 oz water and 8oz whole milk and this stuff mixes just fine. I don't know where people are getting chalkiness from. Its smooth, yes you see the herbs but so what you don't feel them when drinking. Anyone that hates it, email me and Ill take it off your hands and get the gains all for myself!! I highly recommend this protein for those serious about making clean healthy gains!!

I use this product before I go to bed on days that I work out. It definitely relaxes my muscles and I find sometimes I do sleep better after digesting this product. I mix one scoop with 10oz of water or almond milk. The taste is not that great but also not that bad. I have not noticed any side effects from using this product as of yet and I have been using it for almost 2 months.

just bought this product, used it last night for the first time. knocked me out in 10 minutes after taking it. I really like the natural stuff in this product that makes you sleepy. had a great sleep and felt great this morning. only bad thing is i really dont like is the taste. Senior in high school and have been lifting for 4 years on and off due to sports, and will play football at the collegiate level. In my 4 years of lifting, i have never tasted a supplement this bad ! i picked up the vanilla one and used this with water. i suggest trying to take this with milk, peanut butter, or a banana im sure it will help with the taste. over all i like this product and will continue to use this on lifting and non lifting days ! sleep is essential for building muscle !

Comments about RAW HARDCORE GNC Beyond RAW® RE-FEED - Vanilla Ice Cream:

I was very skeptical about this particular protein source but I have been pleasantly surprised as to how effective it truly is! I drink it 30 minutes before bed and go in to my bed without turning on the TV and within minutes I am able to be sound asleep through the night and wake up very refreshed. Yes still having DOMS but that is simply because we work out heavy and do lots of damage :) The flavor IMHO is that of a very high quality melted vanilla ice cream. I take my protein with milk so it probably helps make it that much better. If you need a night/casein protein, this is the one to buy!!!

Comments about RAW HARDCORE GNC Beyond RAW® RE-FEED - Vanilla Ice Cream:

I really like the product in terms of effectiveness. First time taking casein. I take it at night after an intense morning workout and I feel like new the next morning, ready for another workout. Where as before my body would feel sore and tired. It mixes OK but take a little extra shakes.
Now the bad part, in my opinion, is the taste. I haven't tried the chocolate one but the vanilla one is terrible! I mix it with water and it literally tastes like cardboard... makes it difficult to drink sometimes. Mixing it with milk makes it taste slightly better.
If GNC can make it test better it would be an excellent product and could give it 5 stars.

I love the taste I don't really know why people don't like it! You guys gotta remember its casein! Go try elite gourmet casein xt and tell me how chalky it is lol. This gave me non disturbed sleep and I felt great in the morning! Muscle growth happens when you sleep and I think this is the best recovery blend! The only con is the price! A bit pricey but if your getting it with a BOGO like i did, (wheybolic extreme 60 power) its pretty cheap!

The herbal blend really helps for a sound and deep sleep which I think add much to the recovery benefits of the product. It tastes so good, I look forward to drinking it each night. Though I make my own concoction by mixing with 2% milk, 2 shots of caramel coffee syrup and 3 stevia sweetener packets.

This is the worst tasting protein I have ever tasted.I have tried all sorts of ways to mask the taste but it's virtually impossible. If I do manage to mask the taste it's still gritty going down. The price is good compaired to the other brands but I think I know why. If you can gulp it down really fast, go for it! If you're on a budget it's a good product. You just have to get creative with your shakes!
