Energy Bars-A Weight-Loss Secret Weapon
Energy Bars-A Weight-Loss Secret Weapon
Decide whether your bar will be a snack or part of a mealWhether part of a planned program or eaten on the fly, bars bridge the hunger gap and boost your energy. When you're working on your waistline, today's bars can support your weight-loss efforts, especially when fresh food and refrigeration aren't in easy reach. And when you're in a rush, munching on an energy bar is one of the best stop-gap measures for those sudden "I'm ravenous" moments. Downing a healthy bar can even prevent a "roadside attraction" binge of fries, shakes, or convenience-store goodies like high-calorie, high-fat chips and cookies. In other words, energy bars can be a helpful tool in your diet plan.
Put your hunger behind bars
First, you need to decide whether your bar will be a snack or part of a meal. "If it's a snack, the bars should have less than 180 calories," advises Dawn Jackson Blatner, RD, the national media spokesperson for the American Dietetic Association in Chicago. "If it's a meal, the bar should be more than 200 calories and needs to be eaten with fruit and vegetables to satisfy you for four or more hours till you eat again."
In fact, substituting an energy bar-paired with an apple or veggie salad-for one meal each day can help you lose weight. "By adding fruits and vegetables, which are high in fiber and water, you'll feel more full," says Blatner. "This can help accelerate weight loss." If your goal is to drop a few pounds, Blatner says you need to read the nutrient label to make sure your meal-replacing bar contains:
- at least 200 calories
- 3 grams or less saturated fat
- 3 grams or more fiber (to help you feel full)
- at least 10 grams of protein (to help tide you over till your next meal)
Indulge in your favorite flavors
As a general rule, look for bars with the least sugar and the most fiber (in other words, "good carbs") or protein (whatever your preference) to avoid the crash that comes from eating bars that are more like candy disguised in "natural" packaging.
"After you've read the label, it all boils down to personal preference," says Blatner. Love dried berries? Go for a fruity bar. Granola, nut, or yogurt fan? Store shelves are stocked with bars for every discriminating taste. You can take your pick from grain- or yogurt-based, to nut- or fruit-dense bars.
Simply scan the ingredient list for the foods or flavors you fancy and cross-check it with the label's nutrition facts to ensure it fits with your diet goals.
Pick the best bar for the job
As the seemingly endless choices will attest, you can find a bar to fit your evolving healthy lifestyle needs. Lifting weights? Try a high-protein bar favored by weight-trainers to help repair muscle. Love jogging, hiking, and biking? Look for high-carb bars preferred by the distance runners who crave instant energy.
If you're interested in eating fewer preservatives and getting the maximum nutrients from the foods you eat, you might like a raw energy bar. The tastes may vary widely but they are typically packed with robust ingredients such as nuts, nectar, berries, and ginger.
Enjoy!Nancy Gottesman, a nutrition writer and mother in southern California, admits to needing way more energy than these bars can provide!Copyright 2013 Aisle7. All rights reserved. Aisle7.com

Comments about Quest Nutrition QuestBar - Coconut Cashew:
This is a High Protein, High Fiber, Natural Protein bar choice that tastes great. Frankly, they are a little hard to chew because of the high fiber however that is what makes it so satisfying. The Coconut flavor is mild and they are not very sweet like some others. That is a good thinkg. A protein bar isn't suppose to be a candy bar filled with fake sugar and other junk. You can feel great about eating these.

Comments about Quest Nutrition QuestBar - Coconut Cashew:
I had ordered a box of the Coconut Cashew through the GNC website, but it was not going to arrive in time for my needs. So I went to a local GNC store and purchased several flavors of QuestBars.
When I opened the Coconut Cashew, it smelled horrible! Stinky and chemical odors mixed together. When I bit into the bar, it was so hard that it hurt my teeth. It was really difficult to chew and I was really worried because I had purchased an entire box. I could not get over the terrible smell. When my box of Coconut Cashews did arrive, I tried another one. This was was softer and more palatable than the one I purchased from the store. It still smelled bad. The trick is to not smell the bar before you eat it. So I would have to pull the bar away from me when I was inhaling, and exhaling when I took a bite. If you smell it before you bite into the bar, it will make the bar difficult to eat.
Not worth the hassle to eat this bar. I would not purchase this flavor again. It tastes a little artificial like coconut scented suntan lotion. I prefer the Chocolate Brownie, Chocolate Peanut Butter and Mixed Berry Bliss. The Peanut Butter and Jelly was horrible tasting (very dry and crumbly). The Peanut Butter Supreme and the Vanilla Almond crunch were so hard that I could have broken a tooth on it. The Cinnamon Roll had good flavor, but it was a little sweet for my tastes.- Gender:

Comments about Quest Nutrition QuestBar - Coconut Cashew:
This was my first time tasting this flavor. I love the flavor. It reminds me of one of my favorite candies as a chid; however, it is much healthier for me. It tastes great and the bars are good for you.

Comments about Quest Nutrition QuestBar - Coconut Cashew:
These bars are super super good. There are sugar alcohols in the 100% natural line. They use sucralose in the other line.
Because I eat a high protein diet I sometimes have trouble getting all the fiber I need. 19 grams of fiber gets me 2/3 of the fiber I require. And because I follow a sugar free regime, I never get treats.
These bars feel like a total splurge. If you put them in the microwave for 15 seconds they get soft and slightly gooey, like a warm cookie--so tasty. I have turned all of my friends on to these bars. I highly recommend them!Pros

Comments about Quest Nutrition QuestBar - Coconut Cashew:
these bars are great! I can't believe the fiber content--finally a bar that makes SENSE! they taste delicious and because they are more chewy, i eat them slower and feel more satisfied compared to other 'candybar like' "protein" bars. The coconut cashew is great, def bits of coconut and cashews in it so your getting the real thing.

Comments about Quest Nutrition QuestBar - Coconut Cashew:
Description page says "No Sugar Alcohols", in more than one place.
Yet the ingredient list and Nutritional info, list 6gm of Sugar Alcohols per bar. Is this the new math, when 6=0.
Plus they taste god awful.Displaying reviews 1-10
