Can Diet Prevent ALS?
Can Diet Prevent ALS?
Risk of developing ALS decreased 25% in people consuming the highest amount of carotenoidsEating more brightly colored fruits and vegetables might help prevent or delay the onset of ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis), a progressive neurodegenerative disorder commonly known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. What is ALS?
ALS affects the nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord that control movement. Over time these nerve cells die, leading to an inability of the brain to initiate and control muscle movement. Eventually, the disease may lead to total paralysis and is nearly always fatal. ALS usually doesn't affect intelligence, and people with advanced ALS can still control their eye movements as well as bladder and bowel function.
Colorful help for ALS
Several studies have suggested that oxidative stress-damage caused by unstable compounds called free radicals-contributes to ALS. Some studies have shown that high-dose vitamin C, a powerful antioxidant, can slow the progression of ALS in animals with the hereditary form of the disease.
According to the study published in Annals of Neurology, to see what effect antioxidant carotenoids and vitamin C had on the risk of developing ALS, researchers pooled the results of five different studies including the National Institutes of Health-AARP Diet and Health Study, the Cancer Prevention Study II-Nutrition Cohort, the Multiethnic Cohort, the Health Professionals Follow-up Study, and the Nurses' Health Study. Information from more than one million people was included in the study. Of these, 1,153 people died from ALS.
- Risk of developing ALS decreased 25% in people consuming the highest amount of carotenoids compared with those consuming the least.
- Risk of developing ALS was 21% lower for those with higher dietary lutein intake, and 15% lower for those with higher beta-carotene intake.
- Vitamin C and other carotenoids, including lycopene and beta-cryptoxanthin, didn't seem to affect ALS risk.
"ALS is a devastating degenerative disease that generally develops between the ages of 40 and 70, and affects more men than women," said senior study author Dr. Alberto Ascherio, Professor of Epidemiology and Nutrition at Harvard School of Public Health in Boston. "Understanding the impact of food consumption on ALS development is important. Our study is one of the largest to date to examine the role of dietary antioxidants in preventing ALS."

Lutein is found in many vegetables, including kale, collard greens, corn, romaine lettuce, turnip greens, spinach, Brussels sprouts, and zucchini. Egg yolks are another rich source.
Beta-carotene is found in sweet potatoes, spinach, broccoli, cantaloupe, winter squash, cilantro, and other dark leafy greens.
"Our findings suggest that consuming carotenoid-rich foods may help prevent or delay the onset of ALS," concluded Dr. Ascherio. "Further food-based analyses are needed to examine the impact of dietary nutrients on ALS."

First of all, I was very unhappy to find out that they removed this product from the shelves for reformulation. I knew at that time that it would not be the same. I am not impressed with the reformulation.

Comments about SEI Pharmaceuticals MethylHex 4,2™:
This is GREAT for energy and clarity however I have been taking it for 3 weeks and have not had any weight loss. I would recommend this to friends and have had a hard time finding it locally as it's out of stock everywhere!! Caffeine is the main ingredient so it has helped me quit drinking sodas with out any of the headaches that typically come along with quitting my bad habit.

Comments about SEI Pharmaceuticals MethylHex 4,2™:
I walked in GNC to buy some other brand that my friend had recommended but talking to the staff at the store they suggested and recommended this product. I was a little hesitant to buy them but gave them a shot. I started taking one a day due to getting jittery and very cold shivers that lasted about 45 minutes, but after two weeks I took it twice a day and the energy that I had was incredible. I was hicking, running and doing all kinds of things that was lazy to do. I finished my first bottle and I've noticed the drop in size and I am loving it.

Comments about SEI Pharmaceuticals MethylHex 4,2™:
I lost 10lbs in the first month using these pills. They increase my metabolism and energy while reducing my appetite. I have not experienced an increased heartbeat or nausea with these. However, I do feel slightly jittery for the first 30 min and they make me sweat a little. Sometimes I get goosebumbs and chills for no apparent reason. But, it's definitely not that big of a deal! Make sure you drink plenty of water.

Comments about SEI Pharmaceuticals MethylHex 4,2™:
I purchased this product about 6-8 weeks ago; Some jittery feeling in the beginning, but it goes away after 30-45 min. Product is very effective. I am never hungry, but the puzzling thing is I have only lost about 4 pounds. I would definitely recommend this product.

Comments about SEI Pharmaceuticals MethylHex 4,2™:
I started taking this product the end of May. I do Weight Watchers and eat healthy, but I'm a Food Addict. I can be perfect ALL DAY, but from dinner time on, I can't stop thinking about food. A few years ago I went to a weight loss dr and one of the pills I was taking was called 'Tenuate', affectionately nicknamed, 'Pretend You Ate'. It does 'something' that makes you not think about food. Like a normal person. When insurance stopped paying for the Dr. I had to stop going. Way too expensive. Over the next couple of years I fell into the same patterns and gained back a lot of the weight I had lost. I tried this supplement hoping it would have a similar effect on me. To my GREAT surprise... it DID! The directions are to take one in the morning, and one later in the day, but since I only have an issue in the evening, I only take one a day, around 2:30 or 3:00 in the afternoon. To get me thru the nighttime witching hours. I had lost and gained the same 7 lbs since January. As I said, I started taking this the end of May and since then, I've lost 17 lbs!! Plus the 3 lbs I was still down from my see-saw ride since January, and I'm down 20 lbs and still going strong. I even started doing the treadmill 4-5 days a week... and I HATE the treadmill...LOL I can't say enough about this product. Just ordered 2 more bottles.

Comments about SEI Pharmaceuticals MethylHex 4,2™:
this is the second course I have been on, and it is just as effective this time as last use. The energy I get from this product is higher than OEP (2 capsules). The only con--that I am able to deal with--is it makes your nose run..and you get a little jittery--just for a short time. I have tried several other Thermogenics--and have returned them..and this one is the best so far.
