Health Notes

DHA

DHA
This nutrient has been used in connection with the following health goals
  • Reliable and relatively consistent scientific data showing a substantial health benefit.
  • Contradictory, insufficient, or preliminary studies suggesting a health benefit or minimal health benefit.
  • For an herb, supported by traditional use but minimal or no scientific evidence. For a supplement, little scientific support.

Our proprietary "Star-Rating" system was developed to help you easily understand the amount of scientific support behind each supplement in relation to a specific health condition. While there is no way to predict whether a vitamin, mineral, or herb will successfully treat or prevent associated health conditions, our unique ratings tell you how well these supplements are understood by the medical community, and whether studies have found them to be effective for other people.

For over a decade, our team has combed through thousands of research articles published in reputable journals. To help you make educated decisions, and to better understand controversial or confusing supplements, our medical experts have digested the science into these three easy-to-follow ratings. We hope this provides you with a helpful resource to make informed decisions towards your health and well-being.

This supplement has been used in connection with the following health conditions:

Stress
Dose: 1.5 to 1.8 grams daily
Supplementing with omega-3 fatty acids, including DHA, may help improve responses to stress.(more)
Breast-Feeding Support
Dose: Consult a qualified healthcare practitioner
Studies have shown that higher breast milk concentrations of DHA (an omega-3 fatty acid present in cod liver oil) are associated with better visual acuity in infants.(more)
Childhood Intelligence
Dose: Refer to label instructions
(more)
Stress
Dose: 1.5 to 1.8 grams daily

Animal and human studies suggest that deficiencies of omega-3 fatty acids may contribute to behaviors associated with unhealthy responses to stress.1, 2 A double-blind study of students with a low dietary intake of DHA (docosahexaenoic acid, an omega-3 fatty acid) reported that taking 1.5 to 1.8 grams of DHA per day for three months prevented an increase in aggressiveness in these students during a stressful final exam period.3 This group of researchers reported in another double-blind study that 1.5 grams per day of DHA given to medical students during a stressful exam period resulted in changes in some, though not all, blood measurements indicating improved responses to stress.4

Breast-Feeding Support
Dose: Consult a qualified healthcare practitioner

Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), an omega-3 fatty acid present in cod liver oil and other fish oils, is important for normal development of the brain and eyes. Studies have shown that higher concentrations of DHA in mothers' milk are associated with better visual acuity in the infants.1 Other studies have suggested that DHA improves the development of infants, although not all research agrees.2 Because DHA in the mother's diet passes into the breast milk,3 some doctors advise nursing mothers to supplement their diet with cod liver oil or another fish-oil supplement. Women wishing to use this or any supplement while breast-feeding should consult their doctors and use only under the supervision of a qualified healthcare practitioner.

Childhood Intelligence
Dose: Refer to label instructionsDocosahexaenoic acid (DHA) plays an important role in the development of the fetal and infant brain. In a double-blind trial, pregnant women received 10 ml per day of cod liver oil (providing daily 1,183 mg per day of DHA) or a placebo (corn oil), beginning in week 18 of pregnancy and continuing until 3 months after delivery. All or nearly all of the children were breastfed at least until 3 months of age. Compared with the placebo group, the group receiving cod liver oil had significantly better scores at 4 years of age on a test that measures intelligence (the Mental Processing Composite of the Kaufman Assessment Battery for Children).1

Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), an omega-3 fatty acid, belongs to the class of nutrients called essential fatty acids.

Comments about GNC milestones™ Kids Gummy DHA For Kids 2-12:

I have two grandchildren and tried these on both of them. My granddaughter ate one but couldn't bring herself to eat another and ended up spitting it in the trash (age 5)

Our main reason for buying these were for my grandson with autism (age 4) He's such a picky eater and very difficult to try news things with. He doesn't get anywhere near what is needed daily for nourishment from food. He sucked off the coating from one gummy and wouldn't go near them again.

Both of my daughters tasted them and said they were not very good and realized why the kids wouldn't touch them.

Thankfully, GNC allowed me to return them! We went for the Yummy Bear vitamins instead and both kids are now taking them with no problems.

My son is 7 yrs. with old borderline ADD but he also developed an nervous tic...blinking eyes sometimes with a small head jerk. Almost immediately after starting these vitamins, as directed by Dr., 2 gummies per day. The tic has almost completely stopped, only returns when extremely tired and have notice significant improvements in his behavior. I would recommend for children neurological or behavioral disorders.

My son has ADHD and I read up on Omega 3's possibly helping out for the symptoms rather than meds. He was prescribed meds for his disorder but I'd rather try a more natural approach first. I am hoping this helps so he doesn't have to take meds for his ADHD.

I bought these for my 9 year old Autistic son who does pretty well as a baseline, but is generally quiet. He has been taking these for about 1.5 months and now he doesn't stop talking. He is now volunteering information and has really come out of his shell. This is a wonderful product and does what other expensive supplements for children with Autism claims to do, but is much cheaper. Since my son will not swallow pills, the gummy is great for him!
