Health Notes

Whey Protein

Whey Protein
This nutrient has been used in connection with the following health goals
  • Reliable and relatively consistent scientific data showing a substantial health benefit.
  • Contradictory, insufficient, or preliminary studies suggesting a health benefit or minimal health benefit.
  • For an herb, supported by traditional use but minimal or no scientific evidence. For a supplement, little scientific support.

Our proprietary "Star-Rating" system was developed to help you easily understand the amount of scientific support behind each supplement in relation to a specific health condition. While there is no way to predict whether a vitamin, mineral, or herb will successfully treat or prevent associated health conditions, our unique ratings tell you how well these supplements are understood by the medical community, and whether studies have found them to be effective for other people.

For over a decade, our team has combed through thousands of research articles published in reputable journals. To help you make educated decisions, and to better understand controversial or confusing supplements, our medical experts have digested the science into these three easy-to-follow ratings. We hope this provides you with a helpful resource to make informed decisions towards your health and well-being.

Athletic Performance
Dose: 20 grams daily up to 1.2 grams of per 2.2 of pounds body weight per day

Animal studies suggest that whey protein can increase gains in lean body mass resulting from exercise.1 A controlled trial found that six weeks of strength training while taking 1.2 grams of whey protein per 2.2 of pounds body weight per day resulted in greater gains in lean body mass, but improved only one out of four strength tests.2 Another controlled study found that people taking 20 grams per day of whey protein for three months performed better on a test of short-term intense cycling exercise than people taking a similar amount of milk protein (casein).3 However, a double-blind trial found that men taking 1.5 grams per 2.2 lbs of body weight per day of predigested whey protein for 12 weeks along with a strength training exercise program gained only half as much lean body mass and had significantly smaller increases in strength compared with men using a similar amount of predigested casein along with strength training.4 A controlled study of HIV-infected women found that adding whey protein to strength training exercise was no more effective than exercise alone for increasing strength or improving body composition.5

Osteoporosis
Dose: Refer to label instructions

Some whey proteins may reduce bone loss.1 Milk basic protein (MBP) is a mixture of some of the proteins found in whey protein. A preliminary trial found that 300 mg per day of MBP improved blood measures of bone metabolism in men, suggesting more bone formation was occurring than bone loss.2 A double-blind trial found that women taking 40 mg per day of MBP for six months had greater gains in bone density compared with those taking a placebo.3 No osteoporosis-related research has been done using complete whey protein mixtures.

Obesity
Dose: Refer to label instructions

Whey protein may aid weight loss due to its effect on appetite. In a preliminary study, people were given 48 grams of either whey protein or milk protein (casein). Whey consumption resulted in more hunger satisfaction and reduced the amount of food eaten 90 minutes later compared with casein consumption.1 However, a double-blind study found that men taking 1.5 grams per 2.2 lbs body weight per day of whey protein for 12 weeks along with a low-calorie diet and a strength training exercise program lost the same amount of weight and body fat as did a control group that followed a similar program, but took a casein supplement instead of whey protein.2

Whey protein is a mixture of some of the proteins naturally found in milk. The major proteins found in whey protein include beta-lactoglobulin and alpha-lactalbumin. Whey protein has one of the highest protein digestibility-corrected amino acid scores (PDCAAS; a measure of protein bioavailability) and is more rapidly digested than other proteins, such as casein (another milk protein). 1

Wow. I was really skeptical when I bought it, because it's a pretty weird flavor for a protein powder, but man, it's killer! Two scoops and 12 ounces of water and you're ready to rock and roll! It mixes wonderfully and goes down smooth--no chunks or pasty residue. Definitely check this out!

Comments about Cellucor® COR-Performance™ Series WHEY - Peanut Butter Marshmallow:

First off i used the Peanut Butter Marshmallow and hands down its the best tasting protein i have ever had!!! It tasted AMAZING!!! If i could mix a gallon of it its all id drink in a day...

                Taste 10/10
For me it doesn't get any better. I actually couldn't wait to get home and drink it. I mixed it in a blender with cold whole milk and it tasted like a DQ P.B. Marshmallow milkshake. I eventfully added fresh ground oats to it and didn't change the taste. No weird after taste. I even added it to some pancake mix and scarfed them down like nothing.
                Mixability 9/10
I would of did 10/10 but only use a blender so i'm not sure on a shaker cup. It mixed up smoothly and was nice and thin so it didn't make me want to gag like some others. It mixed well when baking also.

                Effectiveness 9/10
It seemed to do its job. My muscles always felt good, My size seemed to grow, My body liked it and didn't feel all bloated or have any stomach issues as i did in the past with others... I seemed to have great recovery while taking this.

                Value 10/10
I have seen the prices range from $20-30 for a 2 lb tub and $40-50 for the 4 lb tub. For me since i loved how it tasted and wanted to always use it that makes it even a better deal then wasting money to let it sit on the shelf unused. Also since it works great for shakes, pancakes and other baked goods its a no brainer.

Overall this is easily a 9/10 for others but for me its a ROCK SOLID 10/10. This is the best one I have used so far. I would like to try the other flavors in hopes that they are as good but if not then i will definatly stick with the P.B. Marshmallow.

Comments about Cellucor® COR-Performance™ Series WHEY - Peanut Butter Marshmallow:

Big thanks to Cellucor for letting me try this product out. 1.5g of fat, 3g carbs and 25g of protein, this product is pretty easy on the macros if you ask me. To start out with, I used 7 ounces of water and threw in a single scoop of Peanut Butter Marshmallow. This powder mixes up very easy and is clump free after about 15 seconds of vigorous shaking. The taste was very pleasant and satisfying. I have had a couple different peanut butter protein powders, and this one takes first place. I would agree with many of the people and state that it tastes like a liquid "Nutter Butter" cookie. Great taste, great macros and a good value.

The flavoring concept really peaked my interest for this and I was expecting it to taste great and it did, what else would you expect from Cellucor, great tasting protein at a very good macro per serving and good price point too.

Comments about Cellucor® COR-Performance™ Series WHEY - Peanut Butter Marshmallow:

taste: I opened the tub and was let down, I really didn't like the smell of this protein, was a mix between peanuts and chemical plastic smell. Thought it might have been the tub, but the cinnamon swirl didn't smell like this.

1 scoop in 10oz of milk, the taste comes strong with a good toasted peanut start. As it covers my tongue it strongly changes, I finally figured out what it is. If you ever have bought freshly roasted peanuts, sometimes in the bag you get that peanut that was a lil too old and a lil too burned, so when u eat it it tastes funky, bit odd, the taste of that in milk. lol. And that's the closest thing the ending and middle section of PBM tastes like, I gave tons of samples of this protein out, trying to find out if I was the only one that tasted this. Half agreed with me, the other half said it was decent
2 scoops in 15 oz of milk was a bit better, but still not something great.

I then added 1 scoop of PBM + pronom choc and that just a bad idea, added 1 scoop to vanilla and that was delicious, honestly my favorite way I drank it. Vanilla plus PBM is a mix for heaven the start of peanuts and the ending of vanilla frosting.

Don t try it in water, trust me.

Overall, i'm a bit let down from the flavor, cellucor's flavoring is off the charts in the super sport protein, and in the pre workouts. I don't know if they rushed to market and didn't take extra time in nailing the flavoring, something I know cellucor is capable of. .

Comments about Cellucor® COR-Performance™ Series WHEY - Peanut Butter Marshmallow:

I'd first like to thank the guys over at Cellucor for sending me this to try out and give an honest review! Here we go:

Ingredient Profile (9/10): With 25g of protein & only 130 calories per serving, I liked the profile right off the bat. The digestive enzymes also help a lot too for me since some brands of protein don't sit well for me. So far I've had no stomach issues and this product has really been sitting well with me. Overall it has a pretty solid profile!

Mixability (10/10): I had ZERO problems with mixing this protein! No clumps, no grittiness, no leftover powder after drinking. I mixed 1 scoop with about 12oz. of lowfat milk in a shaker bottle. Shook it up for about 10 seconds, and it was mixed perfectly with a nice and smooth texture.

PB & Marshmallow Taste (9.5/10): As someone who took fluffernutter sandwiches to school everyday when I was younger, this flavor was absolutely amazing! While drinking it, I would definitely compare it to drinking the milk after eating a bowl of Reese's Puffs. And the aftertaste left me with the thought that I just had a fluffernutter sandwich! Really great job by Cellucor with the flavoring on this one!

Overall (9.5/10): Cellucor just seems to keep pumping out great products. Flavor-wise, I don't know another company that compares with every supplement they come out with. Whether it's C4, M5, COR-BCAA, COR-Whey, or anything else they make, every flavor I've ever had of a Cellucor supplement has been great! I will definitely be trying out some recipes with this protein in the future. I will also be purchasing some new flavors soon! Most likely going to get Cookies & Cream, Strawberry Milkshake, and Molten Chocolate next! I would definitely recommend this protein to anyone looking for something new & delicious with a great ingredient profile. Thanks again to Cellucor for letting me review this for them!
