Health Notes

Whey Protein

Whey Protein
This nutrient has been used in connection with the following health goals
  • Reliable and relatively consistent scientific data showing a substantial health benefit.
  • Contradictory, insufficient, or preliminary studies suggesting a health benefit or minimal health benefit.
  • For an herb, supported by traditional use but minimal or no scientific evidence. For a supplement, little scientific support.

Our proprietary "Star-Rating" system was developed to help you easily understand the amount of scientific support behind each supplement in relation to a specific health condition. While there is no way to predict whether a vitamin, mineral, or herb will successfully treat or prevent associated health conditions, our unique ratings tell you how well these supplements are understood by the medical community, and whether studies have found them to be effective for other people.

For over a decade, our team has combed through thousands of research articles published in reputable journals. To help you make educated decisions, and to better understand controversial or confusing supplements, our medical experts have digested the science into these three easy-to-follow ratings. We hope this provides you with a helpful resource to make informed decisions towards your health and well-being.

Athletic Performance
Dose: 20 grams daily up to 1.2 grams of per 2.2 of pounds body weight per day

Animal studies suggest that whey protein can increase gains in lean body mass resulting from exercise.1 A controlled trial found that six weeks of strength training while taking 1.2 grams of whey protein per 2.2 of pounds body weight per day resulted in greater gains in lean body mass, but improved only one out of four strength tests.2 Another controlled study found that people taking 20 grams per day of whey protein for three months performed better on a test of short-term intense cycling exercise than people taking a similar amount of milk protein (casein).3 However, a double-blind trial found that men taking 1.5 grams per 2.2 lbs of body weight per day of predigested whey protein for 12 weeks along with a strength training exercise program gained only half as much lean body mass and had significantly smaller increases in strength compared with men using a similar amount of predigested casein along with strength training.4 A controlled study of HIV-infected women found that adding whey protein to strength training exercise was no more effective than exercise alone for increasing strength or improving body composition.5

Osteoporosis
Dose: Refer to label instructions

Some whey proteins may reduce bone loss.1 Milk basic protein (MBP) is a mixture of some of the proteins found in whey protein. A preliminary trial found that 300 mg per day of MBP improved blood measures of bone metabolism in men, suggesting more bone formation was occurring than bone loss.2 A double-blind trial found that women taking 40 mg per day of MBP for six months had greater gains in bone density compared with those taking a placebo.3 No osteoporosis-related research has been done using complete whey protein mixtures.

Obesity
Dose: Refer to label instructions

Whey protein may aid weight loss due to its effect on appetite. In a preliminary study, people were given 48 grams of either whey protein or milk protein (casein). Whey consumption resulted in more hunger satisfaction and reduced the amount of food eaten 90 minutes later compared with casein consumption.1 However, a double-blind study found that men taking 1.5 grams per 2.2 lbs body weight per day of whey protein for 12 weeks along with a low-calorie diet and a strength training exercise program lost the same amount of weight and body fat as did a control group that followed a similar program, but took a casein supplement instead of whey protein.2

Whey protein is a mixture of some of the proteins naturally found in milk. The major proteins found in whey protein include beta-lactoglobulin and alpha-lactalbumin. Whey protein has one of the highest protein digestibility-corrected amino acid scores (PDCAAS; a measure of protein bioavailability) and is more rapidly digested than other proteins, such as casein (another milk protein). 1

Comments about Cellucor® COR-Performance™ Series WHEY - Molten Chocolate:

My motto is when in doubt go with Cellucor. I love cellucor for all the products that they make, and I am a really big fan of them. This protein line they released around a year ago is really good. Everything besides the price (Too expensive). However, I found ON's Gold Whey Standard to be better. i think cellucor put a little too much flavor in this protein. The flavor is really rich.

Comments about Cellucor® COR-Performance™ Series WHEY - Molten Chocolate:

I have tried various flavors of this protein and I must say the molten chocolate is one of my top favorites! The molten chocolate has a very rich chocolate flavor and when I taste it, it's as if I am actually eating a chocolate cake or candy. This protein mixes fast and completely. When I put in 10-12 oz. of water and one scoop of the protein, within a few seconds the protein blends in with the water very well. There are no chunks and clumps in my shaker at all. I like how this protein has the whey isolate and concentrate because this protein gets into my body immediately after my workout and faster too. Also since this protein has BCAAS, I like how my muscles don't feel too tired or exhausted and they feel more recovered. My muscles also feel more fuller too after my workout and the fullness lasts even longer.

Comments about Cellucor® COR-Performance™ Series WHEY - Molten Chocolate:

Before I get things started, I'd like to thank the guys over at Cellucor for sending me out a tub of their new COR-Performance Whey to try out and give an honest review!

Ingredient Profile (9/10): With 25g of protein & only 130 calories per serving, I liked the profile right off the bat. The digestive enzymes also help a lot too for me since some brands of protein don't sit well for me, but thus far I've had no stomach issues whatsoever. Overall it has a pretty solid profile!

Mixability (8.5/10): Overall they mixed pretty well. A few leftover clumps after shaking, but nothing to complain about. They also got pretty frothy, but settled after a few minutes of letting it sit on the counter before drinking. I mixed 1 scoop with about 12oz. of low-fat milk in a shaker bottle. Shook it up for about 10 seconds, and it was mixed pretty good with a nice and smooth texture.

Molten Chocolate Taste (9/10): This is a really quality flavor. Very smooth and rich flavoring. Kind of like a chocolate milkshake. If you're a fan of the basic protein flavors then I'd definitely give this a shot if I were you. I've had plenty of chocolate flavored protein powders, and the flavoring of this one is easily up towards the top of my list.

Overall (9/10): I've now had every flavor of COR-WHEY except for Cookies and Cream. After trying pretty much everything, all of the flavors are amazing, but my favorite still has to be Cinnamon Swirl. Cellucor just seems to keep pumping out great products. Flavor-wise, I don't know another company that compares with every supplement they come out with. I would definitely recommend this protein to anyone looking for something new and delicious with a great ingredient profile. Thanks again to Cellucor for letting me review this for them!

Comments about Cellucor® COR-Performance™ Series WHEY - Molten Chocolate:

There are a lot of chocolate protein powders on the market, what sets cellucors apart from the others? In my opinion, it's their mixability. The taste is there also, but its so easy to mix is why I like it.

Taste: 9/10: Chocolate is chocolate. Can't go wrong with chocolate, but the cellucor protein is very smooth going down and makes it so much better. This protein shake is also good for making desserts. There is such a big variety of protein desserts to make, and cellucor cor performance protein is perfect to make them with because it tastes so good by its self.

Mixability: 10/10: Like I stated above, I love this protein mainly because of the mixability. I use a vortex blender to make my shakes with, which will help blend any kind of powder, but I also use a shaker cup and blender ball from time to time. It mixes awesome and has no clumps and goes down so smoothly its like drinking chocolate water.

Effectiveness: 10/10: I like to drink protein shakes as a meal sometimes and always after a workout for recovery. This contains 25 grams of protein per scoops, which is plenty. I like to take 2 scoops post workout and I believe that it helps my muscles recover tremendously.

Overall: 9/10: This is good quality protein and has a very good taste. The mixability is great, it helps with recovery and it is also good to bake with so you can make those desserts that wont hurt your diet. I would definitely recommend this to anyone in the market for protein powders.

First off gotta say thanks to Cellucor for letting me try their new choc protein. Secondly I've gotta say that I've loved this protein ever since I started buying it, but sadly I'm not that big on the molten choc flavor. It's not that its bad by any means, but I've had some much better tasting chocolate proteins besides this. Still has the same great profile and results, just dont like the flavor. Besides flavor, the only big difference between this and the other flavors is that this one seems to clump much more when you mix it with a spoon and I have to rinse it quite a few times to get the extra protein that sticks to the sides. Is this protein good? Absolutely. Does it mix well or tase amazing? Not so much.

Comments about Cellucor® COR-Performance™ Series WHEY - Molten Chocolate:

              Taste: (10/10)
This is my second favorite protein flavor. I have used this to make protein shakes, protein milkshakes, protein cupcakes, and many more. With either way of making a protein shake, this flavor does taste like a chocolate milkshake. I am not a chocolate fan at all but this product makes me love this chocolate. I have made cupcakes with this product and they were very tasty and the protein did make them a little more bigger than what they normally would of been. Sometimes when I do make shakes with this flavor, I will use the vanilla whey occasionally and it kind of settles the chocolate a little bit but not too much to the point where it takes the taste away.

              Mixability: (9/10)
This is a whey protein product so it is in the form of a powder. If you know how it is when mixing powder with a liquid, you can run into issues with getting clumps or not grinding your protein up all of the way. With people who drink protein shakes, I highly recommend a blender shaker type cup which includes a metal ball inside so when you shake the two together, it ensures the powder gets ground up all the way.

Comments about Cellucor® COR-Performance™ Series WHEY - Molten Chocolate:

First and foremost, big thanks to Mike at Cellucor for letting me test this stuff out!
Let me tell you first off, I get sick of proteins powders VERY easily. I have to switch them up all the time, and typically have 3-4 different brands sitting on my counter at any given time because I got sick of the one sitting right next to it. While I still have 3-4 tubs of protein hanging out on my counter, what has changed is that they are ALL Cellucor's COR Whey!...and I didn't switch because I was sick of that flavor. Instead , the flavor I currently had was so good that I had to try another! This stuff is NOT your typical protein powder! It is seriously a dessert in a bottle that you'll be excited to drink day after day.
Taste: 10/10 I never give 10s to proteins powders for taste, but Cellucor hit the spot on their new line of proteins! This chocolate really is a great tasting chocolate protein! I know most companies have a "chocolate" flavor, but this stuff isn't just chocolate flavor…it's like chocolate cake ground into a powder! I typically mix in strawberries with this flavor, and it serves as an excellent back-bone flavor if you like to mix fruit and stuff in. I've also mixed it with peanut butter, which was also very good. I know a lot of people are even using this stuff to make chocolate flavored pancake batters and muffins that are WAY healthier than your standard pancake/muffin mix. I haven't tried that yet…but I emphasize "yet"!
Mixability: 8/10 It's really hard to find a protein that mixes "really well". This is definitely the best-mixing protein I've tried, but I'm still looking for the day when a protein powder will be mixed well in a glass with a spoon. That said, if you have a shaker bottle, you're all set! It mixes very well in any type of shaker, and doesn't have the typical clumps that most proteins develop as you're trying to gag it down. This stuff really is like a milkshake and you'll enjoy drinking every drop. I typically mix it 50/50 water and milk for my morning shot, and 100% with water after a workout. It tastes great both ways. I've found that if I use only milk, it is a little too thick for my liking.
Effectiveness: 10/10 You couldn't ask for more in a protein powder. Cellucor's COR Whey series has EVERYTHING you need in a protein, plus it is such a clean protein that it still mixes well and tastes great. I still try to eat as much protein as I can throughout the day from natural sources, but coupling eating well with Cellucor's protein has been pretty much my only source of amino acids…which are the building blocks of protein. If you're lacking on amino acids, you can't build proteins or muscles. I've definitely gained some lean mass since adding COR Whey to my daily regiment…but still, the best part about it is that you don't have to choke this stuff down in order to meet your fitness/health/dietary goals! It tastes so good that you actually enjoy supplementing with it!

First gotta thank Mike and Gerge for this! Loved the COR:WHEY! Definitely a good overall taste, throw'd it in some Greek Yogurt for some Chocolate Protein Powder Pudding. Make some cookies and other baked goodies, definitely good baking protein!

Not too amazing on the stats on the Whey profile, meaning, nothing revolutionary when it comes to all the BCAAs and such...but I think Cellucor went for taste, NOT amazing protein stats!

Gonna buy me some 4LB tubs over my next bulk.

Comments about Cellucor® COR-Performance™ Series WHEY - Molten Chocolate:

                    MIX-ABILITY- 10
Molten chocolate dissolved completely and quicky when mixed in my shaker both with water and with milk.

                    EFFECTIVENESS- 10
with 25g of protein per scoop this is possibly the most effective protein ive used. only 130 cals per scoop and I get all the protein I need post workout. needless to say ive been making gains and I feel its helped with sorness also.

                    TASTE- 9
I didn't really know what to expect with the taste but I was pleasantly surprised. even my wife liked it! When mixed with milk it tastes like a very thin chocolate pudding. I love it after a workout.

                    PRICE- 9
its priced pretty competitively at 27$ for a 2 lb tup as compared to muscle milk at about 24$ where as cellucor has about 9g more protein and less cals and sugars etc per scoop I say its a great buy.

                    OVERALL- 9.5
overall a great product to add to your arsenal, it has great flavor to go along with a solid ingredient profile at a legitimate price, I suggest you give it a try.

Thank you cellucor for letting me try this!
