Health Notes

Whey Protein

Whey Protein
This nutrient has been used in connection with the following health goals
  • Reliable and relatively consistent scientific data showing a substantial health benefit.
  • Contradictory, insufficient, or preliminary studies suggesting a health benefit or minimal health benefit.
  • For an herb, supported by traditional use but minimal or no scientific evidence. For a supplement, little scientific support.

Our proprietary "Star-Rating" system was developed to help you easily understand the amount of scientific support behind each supplement in relation to a specific health condition. While there is no way to predict whether a vitamin, mineral, or herb will successfully treat or prevent associated health conditions, our unique ratings tell you how well these supplements are understood by the medical community, and whether studies have found them to be effective for other people.

For over a decade, our team has combed through thousands of research articles published in reputable journals. To help you make educated decisions, and to better understand controversial or confusing supplements, our medical experts have digested the science into these three easy-to-follow ratings. We hope this provides you with a helpful resource to make informed decisions towards your health and well-being.

Athletic Performance
Dose: 20 grams daily up to 1.2 grams of per 2.2 of pounds body weight per day

Animal studies suggest that whey protein can increase gains in lean body mass resulting from exercise.1 A controlled trial found that six weeks of strength training while taking 1.2 grams of whey protein per 2.2 of pounds body weight per day resulted in greater gains in lean body mass, but improved only one out of four strength tests.2 Another controlled study found that people taking 20 grams per day of whey protein for three months performed better on a test of short-term intense cycling exercise than people taking a similar amount of milk protein (casein).3 However, a double-blind trial found that men taking 1.5 grams per 2.2 lbs of body weight per day of predigested whey protein for 12 weeks along with a strength training exercise program gained only half as much lean body mass and had significantly smaller increases in strength compared with men using a similar amount of predigested casein along with strength training.4 A controlled study of HIV-infected women found that adding whey protein to strength training exercise was no more effective than exercise alone for increasing strength or improving body composition.5

Osteoporosis
Dose: Refer to label instructions

Some whey proteins may reduce bone loss.1 Milk basic protein (MBP) is a mixture of some of the proteins found in whey protein. A preliminary trial found that 300 mg per day of MBP improved blood measures of bone metabolism in men, suggesting more bone formation was occurring than bone loss.2 A double-blind trial found that women taking 40 mg per day of MBP for six months had greater gains in bone density compared with those taking a placebo.3 No osteoporosis-related research has been done using complete whey protein mixtures.

Obesity
Dose: Refer to label instructions

Whey protein may aid weight loss due to its effect on appetite. In a preliminary study, people were given 48 grams of either whey protein or milk protein (casein). Whey consumption resulted in more hunger satisfaction and reduced the amount of food eaten 90 minutes later compared with casein consumption.1 However, a double-blind study found that men taking 1.5 grams per 2.2 lbs body weight per day of whey protein for 12 weeks along with a low-calorie diet and a strength training exercise program lost the same amount of weight and body fat as did a control group that followed a similar program, but took a casein supplement instead of whey protein.2

Whey protein is a mixture of some of the proteins naturally found in milk. The major proteins found in whey protein include beta-lactoglobulin and alpha-lactalbumin. Whey protein has one of the highest protein digestibility-corrected amino acid scores (PDCAAS; a measure of protein bioavailability) and is more rapidly digested than other proteins, such as casein (another milk protein). 1

Comments about Cellucor® COR-Performance™ Series WHEY - Strawberry Milkshake:

I am typically not a fan of anything strawberry-flavored, but Cellucor shipped me a 2lb tub of their Strawberry COR-Whey to try. I must say that I was very surprised by the flavor. It's a very subtle strawberry taste, and nothing too overpowering. As with every other flavor of their protein, it mixes excellently in water but seemed just a bit too thick for my likings when mixed with milk. I'd definitely buy this protein but would probably end up using it for making protein pancakes and muffins instead of using it strictly for shakes.

I like strawberry flavored protein, but this wasn't one of my favorite strawberry tasting protein. It was good, but i feel like it needed more flavor. I took after workouts I really felt like it would feed into my muscles pretty quickly, and helped me gain some solid size

Comments about Cellucor® COR-Performance™ Series WHEY - Strawberry Milkshake:

Usually I'm not a big fan of fruit flavored proteins but when I tried the strawberry milkshake, it was the best tasting fruit flavored protein I have ever tried! When I tried the strawberry milkshake, it tasted just like a Nesquick and it was very nice and smooth. This protein mixed very well with water in my shaker of 10-12 oz. of water and just one scoop of the protein. The protein mixed in with the water very quick and there is nothing in the shaker. No chunks or clumps at all. I like this protein because it has whey isolate, concentrate and BCAAs. It benefits me after my work out because my muscles don't feel too exhausted and tried, they don't feel like deteriorating, and they feel more recovered than ever before.

Comments about Cellucor® COR-Performance™ Series WHEY - Strawberry Milkshake:

Before I get things started, I'd like to thank the guys over at Cellucor for sending me out a tub of their new COR-Performance Whey to try out and give an honest review!

Ingredient Profile (9/10): With 25g of protein & only 130 calories per serving, I liked the profile right off the bat. The digestive enzymes also help a lot too for me since some brands of protein don't sit well for me, but thus far I've had no stomach issues whatsoever. Overall it has a pretty solid profile!

Mixability (8.5/10): Overall they mixed pretty well. A few leftover clumps after shaking, but nothing to complain about. They also got pretty frothy, but settled after a few minutes of letting it sit on the counter before drinking. I mixed 1 scoop with about 12oz. of low-fat milk in a shaker bottle. Shook it up for about 10 seconds, and it was mixed pretty good with a nice and smooth texture.

Strawberry Milkshake Taste (9.5/10): As someone who Strawberry Nesquik, this flavor was absolutely amazing! Really great job by Cellucor with the flavoring on this one! Smooth and refreshing after a nice workout. I also mixed 1 scoop of this with 1 scoop of Molten Chocolate, and it tasted delicious. Kind of like Cellucor's version of Chocolate Covered Strawberries! Definitely recommend doing that if you have the chance.

Overall (9/10): I've now had every flavor of COR-WHEY except for Cookies and Cream. After trying pretty much everything, all of the flavors are amazing, but my favorite still has to be Cinnamon Swirl. Cellucor just seems to keep pumping out great products. Flavor-wise, I don't know another company that compares with every supplement they come out with. I would definitely recommend this protein to anyone looking for something new and delicious with a great ingredient profile. Thanks again to Cellucor for letting me review this for them!

Comments about Cellucor® COR-Performance™ Series WHEY - Strawberry Milkshake:

First off gotta say thanks to Cellucor for letting me try their new strawberry protein. As with the chocolate they let me try, I wasn't over the top about the flavor. The results and profile of the product are on point, especially with the added digestive enzymes, I just didn't like the chocolate or strawberry. I'm a little biased and hard on these two flavors in particular since I'm not big on those flavors in general. But with the strawberry it mixed fairly well. If you're looking for a great tasting flavor I'd go with the pbmarsh or cinnamon swirl. Absolutely phenomenal flavors with a great profile that could fit into virtually anyone's diet!

Comments about Cellucor® COR-Performance™ Series WHEY - Strawberry Milkshake:

              Taste: (7/10)
When I got his product, I was very excited to try it because strawberry milkshakes are delicious. When I tried this product for the first time, I was very shocked as to how it tasted. It tastes more like strawberry oatmeal because of the protein in it and I'm not a huge fan of oatmeal so it wasn't one of my favorites.

              Mixability: (8/10)
Just like I mentioned before, this product is in a powder form so it's not the easiest when it comes to mixing. I find it extremely helpful if you have something similar to a blender cup because those include a metal ball inside for when you shake it and that actually ensures the powder gets grounded up all of the way. Something similar to this prevents clumps from forming in your protein shake as well.

              Effectiveness: (7/10)
I only rate this a 7/10 for effectiveness just because it doesn't taste like I expected and since it's not one of my favorite's, it's effectiveness doesn't really make a difference since it's not a flavor I drink regularly. Protein overall as a product is effective though because you can supplement it as a drink or snack and your stomach is satisfied from it which prevents you from eating a lot.

Comments about Cellucor® COR-Performance™ Series WHEY - Strawberry Milkshake:

What can you say about strawberry milkshake to really bring out the true essence of simply how good it is. It honestly tastes amazing, tasting just like a strawberry shortcake. Personally im not the biggest fan of strawberry, but strawberry milkshake really makes a good case for its taste.

Taste 8/10: Again, im not the biggest fan of strawberry flavored proteins. But strawberry milkshake definitely tastes really good. It reminds me of a strawberry shortcake, with a nice glass of milk. It definitely has the frothy taste at the top of the mix bottle, and tastes really creamy to drink. the reason i took two points from it simply was because the strawberry taste is not as strong as i would like for it to be, i think it the "milkshake" part of the title is more present than the "strawberry" part.

Mixibility 10/10: Cellucor just seems to be the master of making perfect supplements that seem to mix with any liquid/temperature. There is no residue at all, and a creamy frothy foam that sits on top of the liquid its self. I mixed it with water right from a water fountain, and it mixed in perfectly. i mixed it with milk, and it actually came out even better. Mixibility is unparallel here, and is undoubtly the best one here.

Effectiveness: It's whey protein, a staple supplement in bodybuilding. I take this either in the mornings when i leave for a busy day, but more importantly right after a workout. i feel that this is the best time, from a personal point of view. All in all, the macro's listed on Cellucor's Whey Protein are all solid. Low Fat, Low Carbs, and High Protein. Making Cellucor Cor Performance protein a really good protein, putting it right next to, if not atop Gold Standards.

Hands Down..Cellucor's protein is one of the best proteins i have ever had, and it's taste is simply unparallel compared to other proteins out there. before this, my personal favorite protein was Gold Standards, then i went towards a few random proteins here and there, Syntha 6/Phase 8. But none of those could honestly match up to this one, it is so much better than the others and would honestly go and buy out the entire line if i could.

Comments about Cellucor® COR-Performance™ Series WHEY - Strawberry Milkshake:

First of all, thank you Cellucor for letting me try out this product. Like the other flavors, this product is a great value with very good macros. It's very hard to beat the COR-Series Whey for the price and the taste. As far as the flavor goes, I actually enjoyed the Strawberry Milkshake a lot. The taste isn't so much strawberry, but it tastes like a mix of berries which is OK to me. It is a very sweet taste and easy to drink. I used 5 ounces per scoop and everything mixed up well with 1% fat milk. If you've ever had any sparkling "flavored" water, this reminds me a lot of those. One of the better strawberry flavors of whey I have had. So if you like strawberry protein shakes, give it a shot.

Comments about Cellucor® COR-Performance™ Series WHEY - Strawberry Milkshake:

Love all of the Cellucor proteins but this may be my least favorite flavor. I'm not a fan of strawberry milkshakes or milk in general to start with so that would be why it is my least favorite.

For anyoen who likes strawberry milk, you will love this flavor, very smooth. Great recovery on this and is perfect for anytime throughout the day, thanks again Cellucor for giving me the chance to try it out!

Comments about Cellucor® COR-Performance™ Series WHEY - Strawberry Milkshake:

I absolutely love the other cellucor whey flavors but honestly this one is just bland. It doesn't taste anywhere near as good as the other flavors and really leaves a lot to be desired. Don't get me wrong the flavor isn't awful but it isn't anywhere near as good as Peanut Butter Marshmallow or Cinnamon Swirl. I won't be purchasing this flavor again.
