Health Notes

Whey Protein

Whey Protein
This nutrient has been used in connection with the following health goals
  • Reliable and relatively consistent scientific data showing a substantial health benefit.
  • Contradictory, insufficient, or preliminary studies suggesting a health benefit or minimal health benefit.
  • For an herb, supported by traditional use but minimal or no scientific evidence. For a supplement, little scientific support.

Our proprietary "Star-Rating" system was developed to help you easily understand the amount of scientific support behind each supplement in relation to a specific health condition. While there is no way to predict whether a vitamin, mineral, or herb will successfully treat or prevent associated health conditions, our unique ratings tell you how well these supplements are understood by the medical community, and whether studies have found them to be effective for other people.

For over a decade, our team has combed through thousands of research articles published in reputable journals. To help you make educated decisions, and to better understand controversial or confusing supplements, our medical experts have digested the science into these three easy-to-follow ratings. We hope this provides you with a helpful resource to make informed decisions towards your health and well-being.

Athletic Performance
Dose: 20 grams daily up to 1.2 grams of per 2.2 of pounds body weight per day

Animal studies suggest that whey protein can increase gains in lean body mass resulting from exercise.1 A controlled trial found that six weeks of strength training while taking 1.2 grams of whey protein per 2.2 of pounds body weight per day resulted in greater gains in lean body mass, but improved only one out of four strength tests.2 Another controlled study found that people taking 20 grams per day of whey protein for three months performed better on a test of short-term intense cycling exercise than people taking a similar amount of milk protein (casein).3 However, a double-blind trial found that men taking 1.5 grams per 2.2 lbs of body weight per day of predigested whey protein for 12 weeks along with a strength training exercise program gained only half as much lean body mass and had significantly smaller increases in strength compared with men using a similar amount of predigested casein along with strength training.4 A controlled study of HIV-infected women found that adding whey protein to strength training exercise was no more effective than exercise alone for increasing strength or improving body composition.5

Osteoporosis
Dose: Refer to label instructions

Some whey proteins may reduce bone loss.1 Milk basic protein (MBP) is a mixture of some of the proteins found in whey protein. A preliminary trial found that 300 mg per day of MBP improved blood measures of bone metabolism in men, suggesting more bone formation was occurring than bone loss.2 A double-blind trial found that women taking 40 mg per day of MBP for six months had greater gains in bone density compared with those taking a placebo.3 No osteoporosis-related research has been done using complete whey protein mixtures.

Obesity
Dose: Refer to label instructions

Whey protein may aid weight loss due to its effect on appetite. In a preliminary study, people were given 48 grams of either whey protein or milk protein (casein). Whey consumption resulted in more hunger satisfaction and reduced the amount of food eaten 90 minutes later compared with casein consumption.1 However, a double-blind study found that men taking 1.5 grams per 2.2 lbs body weight per day of whey protein for 12 weeks along with a low-calorie diet and a strength training exercise program lost the same amount of weight and body fat as did a control group that followed a similar program, but took a casein supplement instead of whey protein.2

Whey protein is a mixture of some of the proteins naturally found in milk. The major proteins found in whey protein include beta-lactoglobulin and alpha-lactalbumin. Whey protein has one of the highest protein digestibility-corrected amino acid scores (PDCAAS; a measure of protein bioavailability) and is more rapidly digested than other proteins, such as casein (another milk protein). 1

Comments about Cellucor® COR-Performance™ Series WHEY - Whipped Vanilla:

Taste: The Whipped Vanilla was a real treat for me. It reminded me of the whipped frosting you would have on cakes or cupcakes, only with a high protein content. I have tried other vanillas from other manufacturers (BSN, Dymatize, EAS, VPX) and I would rank this one among the top it terms of taste with BSN.
Mixability: This powder seems one of the more finer powders of the group (PB Marshmallow was thicker for example) and allowed this to mix really well with no left over clumps.
Performance: A standard whey ingredient profile so it is nothing magical. It is a great "supplement" in one's diet who needs help meeting protein needs, and is a great go-to source for someone on a lower carb restriction.
Overall: I was pleased with the product flavoring and profile overall. I feel Cellucor did a nice job with the Whipped Vanilla protein and I will continue to purchase this one going forward.

Comments about Cellucor® COR-Performance™ Series WHEY - Whipped Vanilla:

how can i say this but this is one of the best vanilla proteins i have tasted ever!!1

mixability 10/10: like all the other flavors from cellucor this mixes great!! no clumps or left over residue at the bottom which is always a great thing because who wants to taste a clump of unmixed protein lol.

Profile 10/10: with the profile and ingrediant list for this you can go wrong and is perfect for everyone trying to loos weight or just hit there macros... i mean come on now 130 cals.. 1.5g of fat and 25g of protein is great.

taste 10/10: this vanilla flavor is amazing usually im not a big fan of certain company's vanilla flavors and only get them to cook and bake with but with cellucors i am able to drink a shake and enjoy every little sip i take. I tried it with water and almond milk and they both tasted amazing even my vanilla pancakes were to die for.

overall 9.5/10 i give it a 9.5 because of the price other then that this stuff is amazing and i highly recommend it to everyone out there looking for a good tasting protein

Comments about Cellucor® COR-Performance™ Series WHEY - Whipped Vanilla:

Before I get things started, I'd like to thank the guys over at Cellucor for sending me out a tub of their new COR-Performance Whey to try out and give an honest review!

Ingredient Profile (9/10): With 25g of protein & only 130 calories per serving, I liked the profile right off the bat. The digestive enzymes also help a lot too for me since some brands of protein don't sit well for me, but thus far I've had no stomach issues whatsoever. Overall it has a pretty solid profile!

Mixability (8.5/10): Overall they mixed pretty well. A few leftover clumps after shaking, but nothing to complain about. They also got pretty frothy, but settled after a few minutes of letting it sit on the counter before drinking. I mixed 1 scoop with about 12oz. of low-fat milk in a shaker bottle. Shook it up for about 10 seconds, and it was mixed pretty good with a nice and smooth texture.

Whipped Vanilla Taste (9.5/10): I'm not usually one to buy vanilla flavored protein, but this may become one of my go-to's from now on! Really awesome flavor. The vanilla is very rich and to me it seems like there's a hint of coconut flavoring as well. The good thing about a vanilla protein is that you can mix it with so many things. I made my own fruit smoothies with strawberries, bananas, blueberries, peanut butter, etc. Definitely something that I would love to keep using in the future.

Overall (9/10): I've now had every flavor of COR-WHEY except for Cookies and Cream. After trying pretty much everything, all of the flavors are amazing, but my favorite still has to be Cinnamon Swirl. Cellucor just seems to keep pumping out great products. Flavor-wise, I don't know another company that compares with every supplement they come out with. I would definitely recommend this protein to anyone looking for something new and delicious with a great ingredient profile. Thanks again to Cellucor for letting me review this for them!

Comments about Cellucor® COR-Performance™ Series WHEY - Whipped Vanilla:

In the past I have tried various vanilla proteins that tasted like plastic and back then I wasn't really a big fan of vanilla flavored proteins. Taste didn't really matter to me as long as it helped me get my macros in and helped me recover my muscles after my workout. When I tried the whipped vanilla, all of that has changed. The first time I tasted the whipped vanilla, it was nice, smooth, and sweet. I would always put in 10-12 oz. of water into my shaker and one scoop of the protein. Within a few seconds of shaking it, there were no chunks and clumps in my shaker. It completed dissolved and mixed in with the water very well. I feel that the formula of this protein is great! The whey isolate gets into my system right after my workout and immediately. The BCAAs help to recover my muscles and they don't feel too deteriorated. They feel more recovered and I am still able to keep the muscle fullness even longer.

Comments about Cellucor® COR-Performance™ Series WHEY - Whipped Vanilla:

I gotta say I absolutely loved this whey. The vanilla flavor in my opinion was awesome to me. Couldn't give the flavor a 10 since I still think the vanilla Super Sport tasted better. The profile of the whey is what you would expect from a high quality 100% blend- low carbs, 25g of protein, low cholesterol, very low fat. Mixability in this flavor was on point. Didn't notice any clumping of powder whilst mixing (with a spoon). Baking wise I thought that the flavor in this powder held up pretty well and the apple cinnamon rolls I made with it came out great! Affordability- pretty good seeing how bb.com always has deals running on Cellucor products. Definitely one of the best vanilla's I've had and will continue to buy this flavor especially.

Comments about Cellucor® COR-Performance™ Series WHEY - Whipped Vanilla:

I have never been a huge fan of Vanilla-flavored proteins, but this one from Cellucor was much more tolerable than others I've tried. As with all of the other Cellucor COR-Whey flavors, I found that the vanilla had a much better flavor and consistency when mixed with water than when mixed with milk. In both cold and room temperature water this protein mixed completely without any issue at all and left no chunks/clumps behind when mixed in a Blender Bottle.

I've had the privilege of going through at least a 2lb tub of each of the flavors offered by Cellucor (PB Marshmallow, Strawberry, Molten Chocolate, Whipped Vanilla, and Cinnamon Swirl). Out of all of the flavors this one falls at the bottom of the list in terms of taste, but even at that it still has a very mild and pleasant vanilla flavor. The only reason it falls so low on the list is because the other flavors are just THAT good!

Comments about Cellucor® COR-Performance™ Series WHEY - Whipped Vanilla:

First and foremost, big thanks to Mike at Cellucor for letting me test this stuff out!
Let me tell you first off, I get sick of proteins powders VERY easily. I have to switch them up all the time, and typically have 3-4 different brands sitting on my counter at any given time because I got sick of the one sitting right next to it. While I still have 3-4 tubs of protein hanging out on my counter, what has changed is that they are ALL Cellucor's COR Whey!...and I didn't switch because I was sick of that flavor. Instead , the flavor I currently had was so good that I had to try another! This stuff is NOT your typical protein powder! It is seriously a dessert in a bottle that you'll be excited to drink day after day.
Taste: 10/10 I never give 10s to proteins powders for taste, but Cellucor hit the spot on their new line of proteins! This vanilla is excellent. I'd almost say it tastes more like a frosting flavor than just your run of the mill vanilla. I typically use this in my protein shakes along with frozen blueberries and strawberries. It's an EXCELLENT base flavor for really any fruit or add-in if you like your protein shake that way (like me).
Mixability: 8/10 It's really hard to find a protein that mixes "really well". This is definitely the best-mixing protein I've tried, but I'm still looking for the day when a protein powder will be mixed well in a glass with a spoon. That said, if you have a shaker bottle, you're all set! It mixes very well in any type of shaker, and doesn't have the typical clumps that most proteins develop as you're trying to gag it down. This stuff really is like a milkshake and you'll enjoy drinking every drop. I typically mix it 50/50 water and milk for my morning shot, and 100% with water after a workout. It tastes great both ways. I've found that if I use only milk, it is a little too thick for my liking.
Effectiveness: 10/10 You couldn't ask for more in a protein powder. Cellucor's COR Whey series has EVERYTHING you need in a protein, plus it is such a clean protein that it still mixes well and tastes great. I still try to eat as much protein as I can throughout the day from natural sources, but coupling eating well with Cellucor's protein has been pretty much my only source of amino acids…which are the building blocks of protein. If you're lacking on amino acids, you can't build proteins or muscles. I've definitely gained some lean mass since adding COR Whey to my daily regiment…but still, the best part about it is that you don't have to choke this stuff down in order to meet your fitness/health/dietary goals! It tastes so good that you actually enjoy supplementing with it!

This is one of the best tasting protein powders I have ever taken. I even look forward to drinking it. I am trying to put on muscle and maintain, if not, lose a little around the waist. This powder has not put a pound on me while giving me excellent size results. In little over a week, I was already much bigger without any excess fat. Great stuff!
