Health Notes

Whey Protein

Whey Protein
This nutrient has been used in connection with the following health goals
  • Reliable and relatively consistent scientific data showing a substantial health benefit.
  • Contradictory, insufficient, or preliminary studies suggesting a health benefit or minimal health benefit.
  • For an herb, supported by traditional use but minimal or no scientific evidence. For a supplement, little scientific support.

Our proprietary "Star-Rating" system was developed to help you easily understand the amount of scientific support behind each supplement in relation to a specific health condition. While there is no way to predict whether a vitamin, mineral, or herb will successfully treat or prevent associated health conditions, our unique ratings tell you how well these supplements are understood by the medical community, and whether studies have found them to be effective for other people.

For over a decade, our team has combed through thousands of research articles published in reputable journals. To help you make educated decisions, and to better understand controversial or confusing supplements, our medical experts have digested the science into these three easy-to-follow ratings. We hope this provides you with a helpful resource to make informed decisions towards your health and well-being.

Athletic Performance
Dose: 20 grams daily up to 1.2 grams of per 2.2 of pounds body weight per day

Animal studies suggest that whey protein can increase gains in lean body mass resulting from exercise.1 A controlled trial found that six weeks of strength training while taking 1.2 grams of whey protein per 2.2 of pounds body weight per day resulted in greater gains in lean body mass, but improved only one out of four strength tests.2 Another controlled study found that people taking 20 grams per day of whey protein for three months performed better on a test of short-term intense cycling exercise than people taking a similar amount of milk protein (casein).3 However, a double-blind trial found that men taking 1.5 grams per 2.2 lbs of body weight per day of predigested whey protein for 12 weeks along with a strength training exercise program gained only half as much lean body mass and had significantly smaller increases in strength compared with men using a similar amount of predigested casein along with strength training.4 A controlled study of HIV-infected women found that adding whey protein to strength training exercise was no more effective than exercise alone for increasing strength or improving body composition.5

Osteoporosis
Dose: Refer to label instructions

Some whey proteins may reduce bone loss.1 Milk basic protein (MBP) is a mixture of some of the proteins found in whey protein. A preliminary trial found that 300 mg per day of MBP improved blood measures of bone metabolism in men, suggesting more bone formation was occurring than bone loss.2 A double-blind trial found that women taking 40 mg per day of MBP for six months had greater gains in bone density compared with those taking a placebo.3 No osteoporosis-related research has been done using complete whey protein mixtures.

Obesity
Dose: Refer to label instructions

Whey protein may aid weight loss due to its effect on appetite. In a preliminary study, people were given 48 grams of either whey protein or milk protein (casein). Whey consumption resulted in more hunger satisfaction and reduced the amount of food eaten 90 minutes later compared with casein consumption.1 However, a double-blind study found that men taking 1.5 grams per 2.2 lbs body weight per day of whey protein for 12 weeks along with a low-calorie diet and a strength training exercise program lost the same amount of weight and body fat as did a control group that followed a similar program, but took a casein supplement instead of whey protein.2

Whey protein is a mixture of some of the proteins naturally found in milk. The major proteins found in whey protein include beta-lactoglobulin and alpha-lactalbumin. Whey protein has one of the highest protein digestibility-corrected amino acid scores (PDCAAS; a measure of protein bioavailability) and is more rapidly digested than other proteins, such as casein (another milk protein). 1

Comments about Cellucor® COR-Performance™ Series WHEY - Whipped Vanilla:

Each flavor has 130 calories in a 34 gram serving, containing 25 grams of protein. Therefore, the protein percentage is about 74%. This is quite good because I usually select products that contain around 70% protein. That is the range where I expect good taste without being loaded with fillers. As for the profile, the ingredients start off with a combo of whey isolate and whey concentrate. The percentage of each source is undisclosed, but it does not actually matter how much protein comes in the form of isolate or concentrate, because both sources are high-quality whey protein. Aside from minor differences in calories from carbs and fat, the only actual reason to prefer isolate is lactose intolerance. In fact, the filtering process used to make isolate may also remove many of the bioactive fractions of whey, which have a wide range of health benefits. Isolates are more expensive though, and Cellucors Whey is primarily composed of whey isolate. I believe a combination of whey and micellar casein is the best option, in order to reap the benefits of different digestion rates and a more balanced amino acid profile, but whey is terrific on its own as well. After protein, there is simply flavoring, thickening agents, and digestive enzymes. The macronutrient content is precisely what I expect from a protein powder. I generally look for 10-20 calories to come from fat with 2-4g of carbs. All of Cellucors flavors fall within these boundaries. Im really glad they didnt use partially hydrogenated oil and/or mono and diglycerides. Im not an advocate of food avoidance, but trans fats are the primary reason we should limit our consumption of processed junk food. It just doesnt make sense to put those ingredients in a product intended for health-conscious individuals. Even if they are only in small amounts, I will always opt for products that dont contain questionable ingredients. I also commend Cellucor for keeping the list of ingredients short, namely because there are no added fillers that are high in nitrogen (i.e. taurine, glycine, creatine, etc.). These ingredients are sometimes used to falsely boost the protein content. If it is listed on the label, you can bet it is being counted as protein, which subtracts from the total amount of whole proteins that you're actually getting. The effects of the COR-Performance Whey are fairly straightforward. The product provides you with an essential nutrient, protein. Humans need a sufficient amount of protein on a daily basis, not only to sustain life but also to build muscle. Research has indicated that exercising individuals need additional protein in their diet compared to sedentary individuals. Failure to meet protein needs will slow growth and inhibit recovery from training. Protein powder serves as a convenient method of meeting protein requirements each day. Protein is unquestionably effective, and protein powder supplies it. Many people use protein shakes as an easy way to ingest high quality protein after training. Evidence is not yet clear whether this is more or less effective than eating a meal of whole foods high in protein. To get the best of both worlds, make a bowl of sludge or proats and stir in cereal or diced fruit. If you are not familiar with sludge or proats, figure it out immediately! Cellucor is near the top of my list when it comes to taste, and they easily beat out the competition offered by the big companies. Furthermore, they managed to do so with a profile that is similar, if not slightly superior, in terms of macronutrients and protein percentage. COR-Performance Whey is definitely a product worth trying. There is nothing magical about protein powder, but I use a lot of it simply because I enjoy the taste and versatility more than meat. COR-Performance Whey comes in a variety of flavors, making it a delicious and efficient way to get an adequate amount of protein on a daily basis. I urge everyone to continue trying various protein powders to find the product that best suits their personal preference. Do not try one product, find it to be adequate, and then assume it is the best. You would not eat at one burger joint and automatically assume that they have the best burgers in the world. I have tried an endless selection of protein powders, and COR-Performance Whey ranks among the best choices in the whey category.

Comments about Cellucor® COR-Performance™ Series WHEY - Whipped Vanilla:

We have all had Vanilla flavored protein, often the normal ones people will have are either chocolate or vanilla, the regulars. Whipped Vanilla, honestly tastes like the perfect milkshake, as if you took vanilla ice cream and just let it melt. THATS the flavor im talking about! Cellucor really hits the spot with their Whipped Vanilla flavor, and there is no other vanilla flavor i would personally have other than this one.

Taste 10/10: Undoubtly, this was the best vanilla flavor i have ever had. The perfect way to describe this flavor would be for you to simply imagine yourself with a bowl of Vanilla Bean ice cream sitting right in front of you, the smell is amazing, the color is so beautifully white. Now, imagine it melted down, smooth, milky. That is what whipped vanilla protein is like, it LITERALLY tastes just like that, and i can't begin to describe how mind blown i am at the flavor. My girlfriend, who works out occasionally asked me to make her a shake and she said that she LOVED it.

Mixibility 10/10: Cellucor just seems to be the master of making perfect supplements that seem to mix with any liquid/temperature. There is no residue at all, and a creamy frothy foam that sits on top of the liquid its self. I mixed it with water right from a water fountain, and it mixed in perfectly. i mixed it with milk, and it actually came out even better. Mixibility is unparallel here, and is undoubtly the best one here.

Effectiveness: It's whey protein, a staple supplement in bodybuilding. I take this either in the mornings when i leave for a busy day, but more importantly right after a workout. i feel that this is the best time, from a personal point of view. All in all, the macro's listed on Cellucor's Whey Protein are all solid. Low Fat, Low Carbs, and High Protein. Making Cellucor Cor Performance protein a really good protein, putting it right next to, if not atop Gold Standards.

Hands Down..Cellucor's protein is one of the best proteins i have ever had, and it's taste is simply unparallel compared to other proteins out there. before this, my personal favorite protein was Gold Standards, then i went towards a few random proteins here and there, Syntha 6/Phase 8. But none of those could honestly match up to this one, it is so much better than the others and would honestly go and buy out the entire line if i could.

Comments about Cellucor® COR-Performance™ Series WHEY - Whipped Vanilla:

Helpful Review Example: This is one of my favorite protein powders! Over the last three months, I have gained 10 pounds of muscle, compared to only 3 pounds for the previous three months. The chocolate flavor tastes just like a milk shake! Even my picky wife likes it. The one negative is that I have to use a blender because this one doesn't mix as easily as some of the other protein products that I have tried. I usually drink one shake in the morning for breakfast, and I have another shake after each workout. I stack this with creatine. Highly recommended!

Comments about Cellucor® COR-Performance™ Series WHEY - Whipped Vanilla:

I have tried many vanilla flavored protein powders but this one is the best by far. The powder blends nicely with fruit as well, and is never clumpy. Easy to digest, meaning it doesn't make you feel too full like some other protein powders. Another great thing about this product is that it only has 1 gram of sugar. However, it has the perfect balance of not too sugary and not too bland. I would also recommend the chocolate flavor protein powder and I would say it's little bit pricey but excellent product. Thank Cellucor for always providing wonderfully made and tasting products.

I was sent this product for review and I have to thank you Cellucor. Nice profile on the new Cor series protein there is no question about that. It mixed just fine and had no clumping. Its nice to see some different flavors out there.
It has been a while since I have had a vanilla shake and I liked the taste of it. Very crisp, refreshing tasting vanilla even though Im more of a chocolate person this is not a bad shake for vanilla. Alot of vanilla shakes I cant stomach for some reason and get a bad after taste but no problems with this product.
