Health Notes

Whey Protein

Whey Protein
This nutrient has been used in connection with the following health goals
  • Reliable and relatively consistent scientific data showing a substantial health benefit.
  • Contradictory, insufficient, or preliminary studies suggesting a health benefit or minimal health benefit.
  • For an herb, supported by traditional use but minimal or no scientific evidence. For a supplement, little scientific support.

Our proprietary "Star-Rating" system was developed to help you easily understand the amount of scientific support behind each supplement in relation to a specific health condition. While there is no way to predict whether a vitamin, mineral, or herb will successfully treat or prevent associated health conditions, our unique ratings tell you how well these supplements are understood by the medical community, and whether studies have found them to be effective for other people.

For over a decade, our team has combed through thousands of research articles published in reputable journals. To help you make educated decisions, and to better understand controversial or confusing supplements, our medical experts have digested the science into these three easy-to-follow ratings. We hope this provides you with a helpful resource to make informed decisions towards your health and well-being.

Athletic Performance
Dose: 20 grams daily up to 1.2 grams of per 2.2 of pounds body weight per day

Animal studies suggest that whey protein can increase gains in lean body mass resulting from exercise.1 A controlled trial found that six weeks of strength training while taking 1.2 grams of whey protein per 2.2 of pounds body weight per day resulted in greater gains in lean body mass, but improved only one out of four strength tests.2 Another controlled study found that people taking 20 grams per day of whey protein for three months performed better on a test of short-term intense cycling exercise than people taking a similar amount of milk protein (casein).3 However, a double-blind trial found that men taking 1.5 grams per 2.2 lbs of body weight per day of predigested whey protein for 12 weeks along with a strength training exercise program gained only half as much lean body mass and had significantly smaller increases in strength compared with men using a similar amount of predigested casein along with strength training.4 A controlled study of HIV-infected women found that adding whey protein to strength training exercise was no more effective than exercise alone for increasing strength or improving body composition.5

Osteoporosis
Dose: Refer to label instructions

Some whey proteins may reduce bone loss.1 Milk basic protein (MBP) is a mixture of some of the proteins found in whey protein. A preliminary trial found that 300 mg per day of MBP improved blood measures of bone metabolism in men, suggesting more bone formation was occurring than bone loss.2 A double-blind trial found that women taking 40 mg per day of MBP for six months had greater gains in bone density compared with those taking a placebo.3 No osteoporosis-related research has been done using complete whey protein mixtures.

Obesity
Dose: Refer to label instructions

Whey protein may aid weight loss due to its effect on appetite. In a preliminary study, people were given 48 grams of either whey protein or milk protein (casein). Whey consumption resulted in more hunger satisfaction and reduced the amount of food eaten 90 minutes later compared with casein consumption.1 However, a double-blind study found that men taking 1.5 grams per 2.2 lbs body weight per day of whey protein for 12 weeks along with a low-calorie diet and a strength training exercise program lost the same amount of weight and body fat as did a control group that followed a similar program, but took a casein supplement instead of whey protein.2

Whey protein is a mixture of some of the proteins naturally found in milk. The major proteins found in whey protein include beta-lactoglobulin and alpha-lactalbumin. Whey protein has one of the highest protein digestibility-corrected amino acid scores (PDCAAS; a measure of protein bioavailability) and is more rapidly digested than other proteins, such as casein (another milk protein). 1

Comments about ESPRESSO PROTEIN Cellucor® COR-Performance™ Series WHEY - Cookies 'N' Cream:

I'm relatively new to fitness and working out, and Cellucor is the brand I've chosen to believe in for my supplement needs. This product is seriously, perfect. I've tried a handful of other Whey Proteins, but they didn't go over too well with my Crohn's. This product did it right. It's effective, tasty, and great. Next time, I'm buying the four pound supply :)

Thank you Cellucor for allowing me to taste test this product!

First, the Cor-Performance Series Whey is a great product with amazing taste and profile for a very, very reasonable price. This alone makes it my new go to lineup of whey products. It's easy to fit into my daily macros and tastes like desserts.

The cookies and cream flavor is my second favorite flavor. It has a nice creamy taste to it, like the filling of an Oreo cookie...and it has real Oreo cookie chunks in it! When mixing with 5oz of water or milk, it mixes up quick and easy without any clumps whatsoever. I love the fact that it tastes so good with so much little liquid! Awesome stuff.

Comments about ESPRESSO PROTEIN Cellucor® COR-Performance™ Series WHEY - Cookies 'N' Cream:

So lets be honest. Cellucor's COR:WHEY Protein isn't the PUREST or MOST ADVANCED formula around. But what they are trying to focus on is the TASTE of the market.

THEY NAILED IT! Cookies N Creme is DELICIOUS. I used it with Greek Yogurt to make some Cookies N Creme flavored yogurt. 6oz+1 Scoop, and you got ~40g of protein, and a killer Post-Workout.

I also made some cookies out of it. I thought it was straight up delicious, even though I need to tweak the recipe.

Definitely a good cooking protein. Nothing amazing on the formula (cold processed, isolate v concentrate, etc) but definitely worth the buy for the taste!

Comments about ESPRESSO PROTEIN Cellucor® COR-Performance™ Series WHEY - Cookies 'N' Cream:

chocolate is definitely a flavor that is a hit or mix with companies even though it is pretty generic, but cellucor u did it this time.
the smell when i opened it reminded me of some oven baked chocolate chip cookies, idk if its too that extent for others, but it was for me

mixability: simple about 8-9oz water for 1 and, no clumps , no leftover gritts, the usual cellucor quality 10/10

taste: taste is just on a different level. its a dark rich sweet flavor of chocolate that makes you think. by god, this is some good chocolate. 10/10

overall the protein does what it needs to do, help hit macros. and ill definitely use this in the morning shake, give me a little kick in the morning with its sweet chocolate.

First thing I noticed was the yummy cookie aroma that comes out when first open the jug. Next is the mixing part. It mixed very well in water, nearly perfect with little sticking to the walls of the cup. There were chocolate chunks at the bottom, but that's okay. Next came the taste. The taste was a mild cookie taste with crunchy chocolate chips at the bottom. A little light for me, but you can make it sweeter if you prefer it to be and I did. At 25g per protein per scoop and low to mid 100's calories per scoop. What I liked most about this one is the larger chocolate chips at the bottom of the cup. Most companies have tiny chips in their cookies and cream. Not Cellucor!

Comments about ESPRESSO PROTEIN Cellucor® COR-Performance™ Series WHEY - Cookies 'N' Cream:

Overall, this protein has a really solid ingredient profile. The COR-Performance Whey Protein Matrix consists of Whey Protein Isolate and Whey Protein Concentrate. Since the whey isolate is listed first on the ingredients list, it's safe to assume that there's more of it. This, of course, is a good thing because it absorbs more quickly (making it optimal post-workout), and can be more tolerable for those with digestion issues. The added digestive enzymes also help out to that end as well.

The taste of this product reminds me of oreos and milk on a cold morning in front of the tv as a little kid. The cookie pieces at the bottom of the cup is awesome.

The mixability of this product is on par with other product from Cellucor is awesome. I had no clumps of the bottom of the cups.
