Can Diet Prevent ALS?

Can Diet Prevent ALS?
Can Diet Prevent ALS?: Main Image
Risk of developing ALS decreased 25% in people consuming the highest amount of carotenoids
Eating more brightly colored fruits and vegetables might help prevent or delay the onset of ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis), a progressive neurodegenerative disorder commonly known as Lou Gehrig’s disease.

What is ALS?

ALS affects the nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord that control movement. Over time these nerve cells die, leading to an inability of the brain to initiate and control muscle movement. Eventually, the disease may lead to total paralysis and is nearly always fatal. ALS usually doesn't affect intelligence, and people with advanced ALS can still control their eye movements as well as bladder and bowel function.

Colorful help for ALS

Several studies have suggested that oxidative stress-damage caused by unstable compounds called free radicals-contributes to ALS. Some studies have shown that high-dose vitamin C, a powerful antioxidant, can slow the progression of ALS in animals with the hereditary form of the disease.

According to the study published in Annals of Neurology, to see what effect antioxidant carotenoids and vitamin C had on the risk of developing ALS, researchers pooled the results of five different studies including the National Institutes of Health-AARP Diet and Health Study, the Cancer Prevention Study II-Nutrition Cohort, the Multiethnic Cohort, the Health Professionals Follow-up Study, and the Nurses' Health Study. Information from more than one million people was included in the study. Of these, 1,153 people died from ALS.

  • Risk of developing ALS decreased 25% in people consuming the highest amount of carotenoids compared with those consuming the least.
  • Risk of developing ALS was 21% lower for those with higher dietary lutein intake, and 15% lower for those with higher beta-carotene intake.
  • Vitamin C and other carotenoids, including lycopene and beta-cryptoxanthin, didn't seem to affect ALS risk.

"ALS is a devastating degenerative disease that generally develops between the ages of 40 and 70, and affects more men than women," said senior study author Dr. Alberto Ascherio, Professor of Epidemiology and Nutrition at Harvard School of Public Health in Boston. "Understanding the impact of food consumption on ALS development is important. Our study is one of the largest to date to examine the role of dietary antioxidants in preventing ALS."

Lutein is found in many vegetables, including kale, collard greens, corn, romaine lettuce, turnip greens, spinach, Brussels sprouts, and zucchini. Egg yolks are another rich source.

Beta-carotene is found in sweet potatoes, spinach, broccoli, cantaloupe, winter squash, cilantro, and other dark leafy greens.

"Our findings suggest that consuming carotenoid-rich foods may help prevent or delay the onset of ALS," concluded Dr. Ascherio. "Further food-based analyses are needed to examine the impact of dietary nutrients on ALS."

Comments about EPIQ SHRED:

This is the time of year where I am busy, busy, busy and not able to have a stable workout routine. I tried Epiq Shred in hopes it would give me some help mainting or losing a few pounds. I am in my last week and had not lost or gained until todays weigh in, now I am 3lbs heavier. I will say it does keep me alert during the day with no jitters like a thermogenic supplement but was hoping to see at least some type of weightloss even if it were minimal to start.

    Comments about EPIQ SHRED:

I posted an initial review of the ingredient profile back in January and I have just finihed my bottle. I am currently eating above my caloric maintenance while weighlifting 5 days/week with high intensity. In the first 2 weeks, I had lost 1 pound, even though I had been gaining 1/2 pound a week on my diet, which was my goal. At the end, the scale did go up 2 lbs, but this would be due to the help of other supplements for muscle building. I had noticed that I was leaner around my upper body, a clear indication of fat loss.

I was expecting Shred to just help me maintain my weight, but I actually was able to continue building lean muscle mass while losing some fat and getting leaner (normally one would have to eat at a caloric deficit to start getting leaner).

I took Shred 30 minutes before lunch and dinner. For me, it didn't really suppress my appetite and I wasn't expecting that since this is a stimulant-free product. If one were to take Shred along with a proper diet for fat loss, then I'm sure the results would be better than mine (with respect to pounds lost), since I was eating above my maintenance to put on mass.

      Comments about EPIQ SHRED:

This is a great product. It is not full of ingredients that you never heard of. It has only quality, research proven ingredients. Also for those of you that compete in organizations that have very strict rules of supplements you can and cannot use. You will not run into any problems with this product because everything is all natural.

SHRED gives you a high dose of Rasberry Ketones unlike a lot of other products.
L-Carnitine-l-tartrate which turns fat into energy
Green tea is a powerful antioxidant that has an abundance of benefits..fights cancer, burns fat, etc.
CLA is also proven to aid in fat loss and also helps retain muscle during a cut and has antioxidant properties as well,
Saffron extract is new to me but from what I read about it, it is suppose to be an appetite surpressant. I do know that saffron is a spice used for cooking and it is rediculously expensive. So this is definetely something new for the fat loss category.
Overall great product with proven indredients.

      Comments about EPIQ SHRED:

Shred is another fat burner made by Epiq which is a decent fat burner considering it is a Non-Stimulant fat burner. There are many thermogenic ingredients in this supplement such as there "Ripped" product. This product does essentially the same thing but there is no caffeine/stimulants in this supplement. You can feel the thermogenic effects of the product about 30-45 minutes after you take it. There are many great ingredients in this supplement to help burn fat and to increase metabolism. You shouldn't get any "jitters" from this product but you should get some good energy. This supplement uses a vitamin B complex as well as energy inducing amino acids that all have health benefits. This is a great supplement for weight loss although I haven't been taking it very long, it looks like it should work well. In comparison to other products out there, this may be a bit more expensive so the quality is great but the value is ok.

My first impression is that this product works as it promises. It does exactly what it says. It might not be the most intense product of this type, but thats what its made for..to be safe. The ingredients are perfect and everything you would want to have as a safe fat burner. This is a great deal as well. For someone looking for a very safe and effective product that will work with a well rounded diet, this should be a definite try.

I would like to thank MuscleTech for giving me the free sample to give this an honest opinion of the product.

        Comments about EPIQ SHRED:

This is one of the best stim-free weight loss products I have ever used. When I received the bottle, the first thing I noticed was an amazing ingredient profile. The addition of two of the industry leading weight loss ingredients-Green Coffee Bean Extract and Raspberry Ketones makes this product reputable. I was a little skeptical about the "STIM-FREE" part of the equation. I have taken a few "stim-free" products, and I did not even know I had taken them. However, this product delivered. About 15-30 minutes after taking (One Pill-recommended dose), I could feel a sense of well-being. My eyes seemed to open up without the "jittery" stim feeling. I felt great and there was no "crash" at the end of the awesome feeling. Taking this product could not be easier. Take one pill twice a day; the pills are not big at all. I never really have a problem even with the big pills, so this was a breeze. The only con I see with this product is value. I do not have a ton of money to spend on supplements, so the price on this is a little high for me. However, for those who have the money and need a stim free weight loss product, I do not know where you would find a better product. I highly recommend this for a stimulant free energy/mood booster.

Thanks to MuscleTech again for hooking me up with a free bottle of Shred. The profile on this product seems good for weight loss. I'm currently bulking but might use this at the end of my bulk to cut up. Love the inclusion of green coffee extract and raspberry ketones. Also the 1 capsule dose is a plus instead of some products that require you to take up to 6 pills a day!

I used this product as a appetite suppressant mostly, with the idea of it helping me to burn off extra fat/calories. I love the profile of ingredients and the fact that it is a "clean" product.
I just did not notice much of a difference, granted I have only taken it a few times so far, so will try and make a updated judgement on that later.

            Comments about EPIQ SHRED:

Before I start, I wanted to state that this review is based on a single serving . Here are my honest thoughts on the product.

Energy(7/10)- The energy was pretty decent for a stim free product. I admit that I am a stim junkie, so I didn't expect much energy from this. It is nice to have a fat burning product that contains no stims, especially if you are on a stim break.

Appetite suppression(7/10)- I took this on an empty stomach and noticed a little decrease in my food intake after taking it. I still was able to eat, just not as much as I normally would. The effect wasn't as strong as say a thermogenic product, but it was noticeable.

In conclusion, great product for a non stim user. I love my stims, so I will stick to that. I bet that if you stacked this product with a thermogenic, you would see some decent results. Give it a shot and see how it treats you.
