    Health Notes

    Whey Protein

    Whey Protein
This nutrient has been used in connection with the following health goals
    • Reliable and relatively consistent scientific data showing a substantial health benefit.
    • Contradictory, insufficient, or preliminary studies suggesting a health benefit or minimal health benefit.
    • For an herb, supported by traditional use but minimal or no scientific evidence. For a supplement, little scientific support.

Our proprietary "Star-Rating" system was developed to help you easily understand the amount of scientific support behind each supplement in relation to a specific health condition. While there is no way to predict whether a vitamin, mineral, or herb will successfully treat or prevent associated health conditions, our unique ratings tell you how well these supplements are understood by the medical community, and whether studies have found them to be effective for other people.

For over a decade, our team has combed through thousands of research articles published in reputable journals. To help you make educated decisions, and to better understand controversial or confusing supplements, our medical experts have digested the science into these three easy-to-follow ratings. We hope this provides you with a helpful resource to make informed decisions towards your health and well-being.

    Athletic Performance
Dose: 20 grams daily up to 1.2 grams of per 2.2 of pounds body weight per day

Animal studies suggest that whey protein can increase gains in lean body mass resulting from exercise.1 A controlled trial found that six weeks of strength training while taking 1.2 grams of whey protein per 2.2 of pounds body weight per day resulted in greater gains in lean body mass, but improved only one out of four strength tests.2 Another controlled study found that people taking 20 grams per day of whey protein for three months performed better on a test of short-term intense cycling exercise than people taking a similar amount of milk protein (casein).3 However, a double-blind trial found that men taking 1.5 grams per 2.2 lbs of body weight per day of predigested whey protein for 12 weeks along with a strength training exercise program gained only half as much lean body mass and had significantly smaller increases in strength compared with men using a similar amount of predigested casein along with strength training.4 A controlled study of HIV-infected women found that adding whey protein to strength training exercise was no more effective than exercise alone for increasing strength or improving body composition.5

Some whey proteins may reduce bone loss.1 Milk basic protein (MBP) is a mixture of some of the proteins found in whey protein. A preliminary trial found that 300 mg per day of MBP improved blood measures of bone metabolism in men, suggesting more bone formation was occurring than bone loss.2 A double-blind trial found that women taking 40 mg per day of MBP for six months had greater gains in bone density compared with those taking a placebo.3 No osteoporosis-related research has been done using complete whey protein mixtures.

    Obesity
    Dose: Refer to label instructions

Whey protein may aid weight loss due to its effect on appetite. In a preliminary study, people were given 48 grams of either whey protein or milk protein (casein). Whey consumption resulted in more hunger satisfaction and reduced the amount of food eaten 90 minutes later compared with casein consumption.1 However, a double-blind study found that men taking 1.5 grams per 2.2 lbs body weight per day of whey protein for 12 weeks along with a low-calorie diet and a strength training exercise program lost the same amount of weight and body fat as did a control group that followed a similar program, but took a casein supplement instead of whey protein.2

Whey protein is a mixture of some of the proteins naturally found in milk. The major proteins found in whey protein include beta-lactoglobulin and alpha-lactalbumin. Whey protein has one of the highest protein digestibility-corrected amino acid scores (PDCAAS; a measure of protein bioavailability) and is more rapidly digested than other proteins, such as casein (another milk protein). 1

I mix this(1-2 scoops Daily) in with 2% milk along with Mega men's Vitamins(Chocolate)for use as both my breakfast and pre-workout. It seems to work fairly well for me. Although the taste is pretty bad along with the smell. I would def recommend getting some of this to test/try out before you buy.

I have to give it 3*'s though tops because of the smell/taste

Comments about GNC Pro Performance® AMP Amplified Wheybolic Extreme 60™ Power - Chocolate Fudge:

I've used alot of protein over the years and if I can find one that doesn't make me want to chuck by the end the container it's rare.

The flavor is about average but I think the quality is higher. It keeps me going post workout until I get some real food.

The only problem I have is the price. Hopefully you get what you pay for.

Comments about GNC Pro Performance® AMP Amplified Wheybolic Extreme 60™ Power - Chocolate Fudge:

What a bunch of pansies complaining about taste... I mix three scoops of this stuff with 6oz of water and it tastes fine and is easy to down. Mixing with cold 2% milk makes it slightly thicker and down right delicious. Mixing it with too much water makes it taste worse because it's thinned out.
It is expensive, and taking anywhere from 3-6 scoops a day will empty the container quickly. At that rate, it's about a 2 week supply at best. The guy at GNC said "your body can't absorb the full dose at once anyway" - which he's right, to a degree, but I don't like feeling like I'm short changing myself which is why I take the full dose. What I'm saying is, one could get another week out of the container by keeping their serving size to two scoops and not 3 at a time.

I started taking this shortly after I joined Crossfit and I can totally tell the difference. Leaned out quite a bit and was able to recover fairly quickly for the next days WOD. As far as the taste, I did have to mess with it a little bit. I noticed if I put the recommended amount of water it says on the package it tasted horrible. I started adding more water than it says and it tasted a lot better and mixed better. Another thing is that stuff is so expensive. I started taking 3 scoops per day and ran trough it too fast. Wait for the sales on this stuff. I ended up buying another source of protein shakes for my rest days just so I don't blow through this one. Stuff is not cheap.

Comments about GNC Pro Performance® AMP Amplified Wheybolic Extreme 60™ Power - Chocolate Fudge:

I stopped into the GNC by my gym to buy my usual Isopure and received a free sample of this. I decided to give it a try as my post workout shake tonight. I mixed it with almond milk, like I do my usual protein powders and I could barely choke it down! YUCK! I ended up pouring out the last bit, I just couldn't do it. I am not a picky eater so if I won't eat/drink it, it must be bad!

I've definitely noticed an increase in muscle mass and become leaner since switching to this product. The taste will make you gag, but if you mix in a shake with some fruit its a little more tolerable. I'm still buying it despite the taste.
