A Healthy Person's Guide to Vitamins

A Healthy Person's Guide to Vitamins
A Healthy Person?s Guide to Vitamins: Main Image
Even in healthy people, multivitamins and other supplements may help prevent vitamin and mineral deficiencies
Ideally, daily nutritional needs should be met through healthy eating-but the typical diet does not always supply all the vitamins and minerals a body needs. So even in healthy people, multivitamins and other supplements may help prevent vitamin and mineral deficiencies and they can also provide more nutrients than diet alone, which may help to protect against or manage certain diseases. The following list gives the daily optimum amounts of nutrients that might benefit healthy people.

Folic acid (400 mcg)

  • The FDA-required fortification of grain products may have reduced deficiency in the general US population, but some authorities believe it is not enough to optimally prevent diseases such as heart disease and neural tube defects.
  • The body's need for folic acid doubles during pregnancy. Supplementation prior to, and shortly after, conception is adequate and effective.

Iodine (150 mcg)

  • A common deficiency in developing countries, iodine is more abundant in Western diets. Most people get enough unless they avoid iodized salt, seafood, and sea vegetables.
  • People with thyroid diseases should check with their doctor before using iodine supplements.

Vitamin A (5,000 IU; as natural beta-carotene for nonsmokers)

  • The synthetic beta-carotene in most multivitamins clearly does not prevent cancer and may increase the risk of lung cancer in smokers. In contrast, however, natural beta-carotene and several other carotenoids may help prevent certain diseases, including some cancers, although its safety for smokers has not been demonstrated.
  • Due to concerns about birth defects and bone loss, people should not take over 10,000 IU of supplemental vitamin A in the form of retinol without consulting a doctor.

B Vitamins

  • The typical Western diet may provide thiamine (B1; 1.5 mg), riboflavin (B2; 1.7 mg), and niacin (B3; 20 mg) in adequate amounts as they are added to white flour products and other foods that have been depleted of those vitamins.
  • Biotin (300 mcg): This vitamin is produced by intestinal bacteria in amounts that, along with the typical diet, provide enough to prevent deficiency in healthy people.
  • Pyridoxine(B6; 10 mg): Some deficiency may exist in as many of 25% of people living in Western societies, and may be most common in the elderly.
  • Pantothenic acid (B5; 10 mg): This vitamin appears to be in short supply in the typical diet though its role in disease prevention is unknown.
  • Vitamin B12 (5-100 mcg): Vitamin B12-deficiency is more common among the elderly than in healthy young people, except for vegans (vegetarians who avoid dairy and eggs) and in people who take acid-blocking drugs or antacids for long periods of time.
  • Some people claim to experience improved mood, energy, and/or overall well-being when taking higher-than-RDA amounts of vitamin B1, vitamin B2, vitamin B3, and pantothenic acid, though this has not been demonstrated in research.
  • Folic acid, B12, and pyridoxine help control homocysteine levels in the blood. Elevated homocysteine levels are associated with several diseases. Studies have shown that supplementing with one or more of these vitamins helps prevent or reverse hardening of the arteries (atherosclerosis) and may reduce bone fractures risk.

Vitamin C (100-200 mg)

  • Severe deficiency is uncommon in people who consume Western diets, but mild insufficiency is found in 6% of healthy adults and larger numbers of college students and smokers. Some authorities have suggested that optimal intake for disease prevention may be at least 90 to 100 mg per day.
  • Supplementation with over 200 mg per day of vitamin C by healthy people does not result in higher vitamin C concentrations in the body, and may be no more helpful for preventing disease than smaller amounts.

Vitamin D (400-800 IU)

  • Vitamin D obtained from the diet and from sunlight exposure can be insufficient, especially in older people and vegans during the winter months. Vitamin D insufficiency is associated with bone loss and fractures in older people and other studies have shown supplementing may reduced bone loss and the risk of falls in older people
  • Though toxic in very high amounts, up to 2,000 IU per day is considered safe.

Vitamin E (30-400 IU)

  • Once widely thought to lower risk of heart disease, other trials have negated those findings and even found a small increase in the likelihood of all-cause mortality or heart failure. Therefore, some doctors advise people not to take large amounts of vitamin E (400 IU per day or more). On the other hand, circumstantial evidence suggests that "mixed tocopherols," as opposed to the more widely used alpha-tocopherol form, may be safer and more beneficial for heart-disease prevention.
  • A reduced risk of prostate cancer in smokers was reported in a double-blind trial with 50 IU per day of vitamin E. However, similar studies have not found vitamin E supplements to protect against other cancers.

Vitamin K (80 mcg)

  • Deficiency severe enough to cause bleeding problems is rare in healthy people. However, low vitamin K in the blood and in the diet has been associated with osteoporosis.

BACK SURGERY AVOIDED

Comments about ROCK CREEK PHARMACEUTICAL Anatabloc®:

No back surgery for me since I have found this product. I am a 35 year old female and have had chronic back pain for a year and a half. I have tried physical therapy, Pilates, massage, books on back pain (it says it's stress related, I agree in some cases), a change in diet, and epidural/cortisone shots. The physical therapy, Pilates and massages have helped a bit but only for a temporary time.

When I started taking this I had no back pain and could not believe it. I have not been able to have a normal life since my pain began. I am so amazed that it is working.

Insomnia has been a side effect for me when I was taking the full dosage. So I started taking 3/day in the morning for the first week. I am slowly working up my dosage.

If you take the doses too close together or too many at once it will cause dizziness.

I would rather not have to take this since it is not FDA approved.

I plan on trying decompression for my back. If it works then I won't be taking the supplement anymore.

My friend who takes this says it increases her anxiety. But she has had anxiety problems for 10 years. So she doesn't take it all the time. She has Hashimoto's disease and when she first started it she could not believe how great she felt.

I also have noticed a reduction of the occasional breakthroughs in my ideopathic (no apparent cause) atrial fibrillation. Just as a guess, this effect may be equivilent to a quarter of my 150mg 2x dosage of flecainide. Do not try this at home!!!

I've reduced my dosage to two Anatabloc daily because of the high price.

After being diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitis, I tried the prescription asacol for quite awhile with no benefits. When I called the Dr. to let him know they weren't helping his advice was to double the dose. I remembered hearing about Anatabloc for inflammatory issues so decided to give them a try. I have been blood free for months now. I will keep a supply handy so I never have to go without.

I have been taking this product for two years and it is amazing. I initially took it for tendinitis in my elbow and workout related aches and pains. The tendinitis was relieved in a week and after workouts I felt great. Noticed since then that my seasonal allergies are well under control and I no longer take any medication for them or pain relievers of any kind. It also seems to give me a general feeling of well being for lake of a better description I just feel good. Can highly recommend this product.

After a career in law enforcement/military I had so much joint pain I couldn't lift my 3 year old grandniece. I have tried everything.
I tried this. It didn't really work in the first couple weeks like they advertise. After a month it wasn't much different than taking ibuprofen or aspirin. I stayed with it though. It took about 4 or 5 months and the difference was like night and day. Almost no pain now.
It works better than anything I've tried, but takes a while for effect. Expensive.

i have neck, shoulder, and leg and back sciatic pain.. I have had presription, physical therapy, accupuncture, chiropractic and massage work.. the list goes on and on.. I tried this because my husband heard about it on the radio and convinced me to try it.. it took about a month and I noticed my pain was cut in half.. I am not cured but the pain is definately drastically reduced.. I am hoping it continues.. sometimes things i try work for a while then they stop working but so far so good.. I am suprised at the difference in how i feel. I also have autoimmune thyroid disease with lots of muscle aches and it has helped with that also. helps with pms pain too. I know it is expensive but it helps and i think the results i see are worth it. the only concern i have are the vague ingredients.. hope everything is all natural and safe

Comments about ROCK CREEK PHARMACEUTICAL Anatabloc®:

I suffered from side and lower back pain. Ultra sound and CT scans revealed nothing. Could not do any work around house without constant pain. My doctor said any other tests would be too invasive. So 6 months ago I tried these after watching the ad on tv about Freddy Couples. In about a week I was feeling better. Pain not completely gone but a lot better. I told my doctor about these and he said he did not believe in internet stuff. He looked it up online and said there is nothing that would hurt me. So keep taking them. I'm 67 years and take 6 pills a day. Very small dosage for my 165 lbs. I also add Tylenol at nite for help when i'm sleeping. I usually wait for the sale @ GNC when ordering to get the best prices on this and other things.

I posted these comments on the Star Scientific (owner of Rock Creek Pharmaceuticals which manufacturers this product) investment board and some members there asked me to repost my comments here. So, here they are. All of these comments are true. As a disclaimer, due to the amazing results I've experienced with Anatabloc, I did buy some stock in the company. However, my main goal here is to help others experience the unbelievable results I've experienced. Take these comments as you will, but definitely give this product a try.

Also, be sure to follow the dosage recommendations and keep the Anatabloc in your system 24/7. Your immune system is continuously working, even while you sleep, so keep it in your system. Also allow at least three weeks to see any improvements. It's very subtle, but after a while, you'll notice that you're feeling better and you no longer have some of the pains/soreness/afflictions that you used to have.

                Good luck and good health!

                ====
I've been taking Anatabloc now for almost 10 months and have definitely noticed some anti-aging affects.

I'm 51.5 years old, weigh ~155 lbs and take 6 lozenges per day (1 every 4 hours and 2 before bed).

Some of the major affects I've noticed:

                1. No back/joint pain whatsoever...I used to have a chronic, aching lower back and occasional shoulder pain.

Also, I think I had a minor hernia prior to taking Anatabloc...at least it was a sharp pain (kind of like a severe cramp) near my hip flexor that flared up every couple of months or more. My doctor recommmended that I go see another Hernia specialist, but I never did. Whatever it was, it's gone now!

                2. Muscle pain after a strenuous workout is much less severe and recovery time is much shorter.

                3. Much smoother and softer skin. Wrinkles/creases around eyes have gotten much less pronounced. Sun spots have dissipated and faded. Minor scratches/abrasions used to take months to heal...now they're gone within a few days.

                4. Better gums and oral health. I no longer bleed when I brush, floss or pick my teeth. I haven't had a canker sore since I started taking Anatabloc.

                5. Metabolism seems to be much higher. I'm eating more than before, yet I'm not adding any weight. In fact, I'm losing weight and fat. My physique is much improved and I'm looking 20 years younger.

                6. My brain function seems to be better. I'm able to think quicker and focus longer and recall things better.

                7. My internal organs seem to be processing the food better. I'm more regular and never constipated nor diarrheatic.

                8. My sex drive is stronger...like it was 20 years ago.

                9. My reflexes seem to be improved. I've been playing ping pong at work for years and I've noticed a definite improvement in my game...I'm just reacting to shots and am amazed that I'm getting to them.

                10. No more inflamed feet/hands during/after golf/exercise.

                11. Much improved sinuses. No sinus congestion/excess mucous since I've started taking Anatabloc. I breathe so freely and sleep much better.

                12. More energy.

I'm not taking any other supplements or vitamins, so these improvements are not due to anything else that I'm taking. I am more active than I used to be since I've got so much more energy, so this could be causing some of the improvements. Also, I have a much more positive and happy state of mind...but this could be due to all of the other factors listed above.
