A Healthy Person's Guide to Vitamins

A Healthy Person's Guide to Vitamins
A Healthy Person?s Guide to Vitamins: Main Image
Even in healthy people, multivitamins and other supplements may help prevent vitamin and mineral deficiencies
Ideally, daily nutritional needs should be met through healthy eating-but the typical diet does not always supply all the vitamins and minerals a body needs. So even in healthy people, multivitamins and other supplements may help prevent vitamin and mineral deficiencies and they can also provide more nutrients than diet alone, which may help to protect against or manage certain diseases. The following list gives the daily optimum amounts of nutrients that might benefit healthy people.

Folic acid (400 mcg)

  • The FDA-required fortification of grain products may have reduced deficiency in the general US population, but some authorities believe it is not enough to optimally prevent diseases such as heart disease and neural tube defects.
  • The body's need for folic acid doubles during pregnancy. Supplementation prior to, and shortly after, conception is adequate and effective.

Iodine (150 mcg)

  • A common deficiency in developing countries, iodine is more abundant in Western diets. Most people get enough unless they avoid iodized salt, seafood, and sea vegetables.
  • People with thyroid diseases should check with their doctor before using iodine supplements.

Vitamin A (5,000 IU; as natural beta-carotene for nonsmokers)

  • The synthetic beta-carotene in most multivitamins clearly does not prevent cancer and may increase the risk of lung cancer in smokers. In contrast, however, natural beta-carotene and several other carotenoids may help prevent certain diseases, including some cancers, although its safety for smokers has not been demonstrated.
  • Due to concerns about birth defects and bone loss, people should not take over 10,000 IU of supplemental vitamin A in the form of retinol without consulting a doctor.

B Vitamins

  • The typical Western diet may provide thiamine (B1; 1.5 mg), riboflavin (B2; 1.7 mg), and niacin (B3; 20 mg) in adequate amounts as they are added to white flour products and other foods that have been depleted of those vitamins.
  • Biotin (300 mcg): This vitamin is produced by intestinal bacteria in amounts that, along with the typical diet, provide enough to prevent deficiency in healthy people.
  • Pyridoxine(B6; 10 mg): Some deficiency may exist in as many of 25% of people living in Western societies, and may be most common in the elderly.
  • Pantothenic acid (B5; 10 mg): This vitamin appears to be in short supply in the typical diet though its role in disease prevention is unknown.
  • Vitamin B12 (5-100 mcg): Vitamin B12-deficiency is more common among the elderly than in healthy young people, except for vegans (vegetarians who avoid dairy and eggs) and in people who take acid-blocking drugs or antacids for long periods of time.
  • Some people claim to experience improved mood, energy, and/or overall well-being when taking higher-than-RDA amounts of vitamin B1, vitamin B2, vitamin B3, and pantothenic acid, though this has not been demonstrated in research.
  • Folic acid, B12, and pyridoxine help control homocysteine levels in the blood. Elevated homocysteine levels are associated with several diseases. Studies have shown that supplementing with one or more of these vitamins helps prevent or reverse hardening of the arteries (atherosclerosis) and may reduce bone fractures risk.

Vitamin C (100-200 mg)

  • Severe deficiency is uncommon in people who consume Western diets, but mild insufficiency is found in 6% of healthy adults and larger numbers of college students and smokers. Some authorities have suggested that optimal intake for disease prevention may be at least 90 to 100 mg per day.
  • Supplementation with over 200 mg per day of vitamin C by healthy people does not result in higher vitamin C concentrations in the body, and may be no more helpful for preventing disease than smaller amounts.

Vitamin D (400-800 IU)

  • Vitamin D obtained from the diet and from sunlight exposure can be insufficient, especially in older people and vegans during the winter months. Vitamin D insufficiency is associated with bone loss and fractures in older people and other studies have shown supplementing may reduced bone loss and the risk of falls in older people
  • Though toxic in very high amounts, up to 2,000 IU per day is considered safe.

Vitamin E (30-400 IU)

  • Once widely thought to lower risk of heart disease, other trials have negated those findings and even found a small increase in the likelihood of all-cause mortality or heart failure. Therefore, some doctors advise people not to take large amounts of vitamin E (400 IU per day or more). On the other hand, circumstantial evidence suggests that "mixed tocopherols," as opposed to the more widely used alpha-tocopherol form, may be safer and more beneficial for heart-disease prevention.
  • A reduced risk of prostate cancer in smokers was reported in a double-blind trial with 50 IU per day of vitamin E. However, similar studies have not found vitamin E supplements to protect against other cancers.

Vitamin K (80 mcg)

  • Deficiency severe enough to cause bleeding problems is rare in healthy people. However, low vitamin K in the blood and in the diet has been associated with osteoporosis.

Comments about ROCK CREEK PHARMACEUTICAL Anatabloc® - Unflavored:

I have aches and pains all over my body. The worst are arthritis in my foot and knees, and soreness in my neck. I took six tablets per day of Anatabloc for 21 days, and felt no benefit at all. Unfortunately, I waited too long to return the product under the 30 day guarantee.

Comments about ROCK CREEK PHARMACEUTICAL Anatabloc® - Unflavored:

I have aches and pains all over my body, mostly arthritic. I had heard wonderful things about Anatabloc, and even bought stock in the company that makes it. After taking six tabs a day for three weeks, nothing improved at all. I stopped taking it, and sold my stock in the manufacturer. Unfortunately, I didn't think of returning it until the 30 day guarantee was past.

After 2 1/2 weeks, I'm not noticing any difference. Will finish the bottle and update my review if anything changes.

Anatabloc is a potent anti-inflammatory supplement. I don't get sore from hard workouts like I did before, and my wife swears that my body hair is losing its grey, and going back to dark color. (When I notice the same on my scalp, I'll believe her.) I just feel better all over when I take it. The only real downside is that I have to remember to take it 4 times per day.

Comments about ROCK CREEK PHARMACEUTICAL Anatabloc® - Unflavored:

I bought Anatabloc to see if it would help with plantars faciitis. The only "con" is that it hasn't gotten rid of it completely but I'm only taking 2 a day (flavored-which is too sweet for my body to process normally). I am ordering some of the nonflavored so that I can take more per day. But the other benefits have been just short of amazing. My life long sinus problems are gone. The arthritis in my hand is gone. The little patch of psoriasis on my scalp-gone! Enlarged prostate problems-gone. On top of all that I am sleeping better too-WOW!My gums feel tougher-the tenderness is gone and I can't wait to see what my next cholesterol reading is!

Comments about ROCK CREEK PHARMACEUTICAL Anatabloc® - Unflavored:

All I can say is Anatabloc is the first supplement I've taken, and I've tried alot, that has made a material difference in the way my body feels. For a time there I was resigned to living with arthritis pain in my hands and my back thinking it was the inevitable consequence of growing older. And it would only get worse over the coming years. I will admit it has taken several months to be rid of the occasional debilitating pain and the all around chronic discomfort in my lower back to disappear but it has. My back feels, well actually I don't really feel my back anymore, it's just there. I view these results as merely positive side effects only and proof that Anatabloc does rid the body of chronic inflammation. The real benefit is protection against heart disease due to lowered inflammation. My last CRP blood test was measured at .20mg/dL. Bring on the BBQ!
I use both the flavored and unflavored pills and like how the unflavored seem to dissolve faster which is good because I usually take those when I go to bed at night.

Comments about ROCK CREEK PHARMACEUTICAL Anatabloc® - Unflavored:

1st let me say that I have had sciatica for the last 3 months that has been getting worse. This is the first time in my life that I have had any long term pain. I am 59 and in good health except my lower back pain. I was taking 2 or 3 Ibuprofins 2-3 times a day. I went and had a chiropractic adjustment but that had little relief.

I went on a cruise and hobbled around the ship using the jacuzzi and had a few massage treatments. Again the pain persisted down my buttocks, hamstring and calf muscles. When I returned home I tried the Anatabloc taking 2 pills 3 times a day and found that the lower leg and hamstring pain eased to the point that I was walking normally.

The buttocks pain is now down to a dullness. I now only take Ibuprofin once a day.

I took myself off of the Anatabloc to see if it was the product or what. The pain in the butt returned and started to radiate down from the sciatica nerve again. I went back to taking the Anatabloc and started feeling better again.

The one side effect that I had was that the MINTED version gave me gas due to the sweetener they use. I bought a bottle of the NON MINT variety and that stopped the gas problem. I take the Anatabloc with a regular mint life saver. I am running around like my old self. So far a GREAT product.

Comments about ROCK CREEK PHARMACEUTICAL Anatabloc® - Unflavored:

A year and a half ago I developed a chronic inflammation of my upper lip. After seeing a specialist and receiving a biopsy I was diagnosed with Cheilitis Granulamatosa a rare autoimmune disorder where it disfigures a person's lip. It is a traumatic experience because everyone notices your face! There is no known cure of Cheilitis Granulamatosa only a handful of treatments. The treatment I received was a very painful injection of triamcinolone every few weeks. My next course of treatment was to start on a powerful antibiotic called Dapsone. Dapsone is scary stuff! I had to receive extensive blood work to see if my body is able to withstand this drug... One month before I was to begin the Dapsone treatment I read about Anatabloc. So I order a bottle, and within 2 days the swelling in my lip started to decrease. II have been on Anatabloc required dosage for three months now and my lip has returned to normal. Words cannot describe my respect for this product. I haven't had any injections in over three months and no scary Dapsone.

Not sure if it's really working or not, I have also been having acupuncture so I don't know which is helping or both but I do feel somewhat better. Have stopped the acupuncture so we will see how it goes. Really hoping it will help with the Fibromyalgia pain. My husband says he has not seen any difference since starting. We have been on it for about 3 weeks, I plan to continue at least another month to see what the results are.
