"Chai" is a Hindi word meaning "tea," so you never need to ask for a "chai tea." Whatever you call it, this spicy tea drink will deliver a pleasing taste and a host of anti-aging health benefits.

Flavor full of flavonoids

The chai that's served up in coffee shops is usually a strong brew of black tea blended with a mixture of spices, milk, and sugar. The black tea leaves (like Assam or Darjeeling) contain a wallop of antioxidants, called flavonoids, that help protect the body against Alzheimer's disease, cancer, and heart disease. In fact, researchers from the Institute for Cancer Prevention in Valhalla, New York, have shown that tea-whether black, green, white, or oolong-has about eight to ten times more flavonoids than fruits and vegetables. And tea may help soothe stress: A British study from the University College in London found that people who drank black tea had lower levels of the stress hormone cortisol and were able to destress faster than those who drank a tea substitute.

Even better than black tea

Chai may be even more nutritious than traditional black tea. Says tea researcher Wa Song, a professor of nutrition at Michigan State University in East Lansing, "In addition to the health benefits from the phenols in the tea, chai provides some phytochemicals from the ginger, cinnamon, and other fresh spices." These spices have different kinds of disease-fighting antioxidants that work in harmony with tea flavonoids. What's more, the milk that gives chai its creamy flavor provides a hefty serving of calcium and vitamin D to strengthen your bones. "Plus it has more flavor, providing a more pleasurable taste," adds Song.

Creating chai at home

It's easier than ever to make chai at home. Dry mixes, similar to instant coffee, require you to just blend with warm milk for a quick brew. Steam the milk in an espresso machine to make yourself a chai latte. To make traditional chai, here's a simple recipe:

  • 1 1/2 cups (355 ml) of water
  • 1 1/2 inch (3.8 cm) stick of cinnamon
  • 8 cardamom pods
  • 1 teaspoon (2 grams) grated fresh ginger root
  • 2/3 cup (160 ml) of milk
  • 3 teaspoons (6 grams) black tea leaves (Assam or Darjeeling)
  • Honey or sugar to sweeten (optional)
  • Place water, cinnamon, cardamom, cloves and ginger in a pot and bring to a boil.
  • Cover and lower heat to low setting; simmer for 10 minutes.
  • Add milk and black tea leaves and again bring to a simmer for 10 minutes.
  • Strain through a sieve.
  • Add honey or sugar to sweeten.

For less caffeine, try making chai from white tea leaves, which are the least processed and contain the highest amount of antioxidants. If you prefer no caffeine, try a slightly more pungent red chai made from red tea leaves.

    I am a health freak who only eats vegetables, lean meat, and barely any dairy products. I work out at the gym at least five times a weak for 45-60 minute time periods. I bought this mix over christmas break as a present to myself and as motivation for me to get slimmer leaner muscle in the new year. However, I have been very disappointed with this product. First of all, it is way to sweet! It feels like I am sucking on pure Splenda or Saccarine. Secondly it is not easy to use; I tried mixing it with hot water instead of milk because I wanted to cut down on the calories and it literally cooked the little granules of powder! It was like fried eggs!( Well, I figured hey, it is like pure protein. Of course it would cook!) So, then I switched to cold water and it didn't mix (of course still too sweet) My third time I tried it I mixed it with a sugar free almond milk (to cut down on the sweetness) and it was okay. It wasn't super yummy, but hey, at least I wasn't drinking mini fried fish eggs! lol. The fourth time I used it I used only half a scoop of the Fitmiss powder to the same amount of almond milk (about 12 oz.). It helped with the taste, but it didn't give me the same amount of nutritional benefits that a whole scoop would get me. So, no I use one scoop for 24-25oz of plain, unsweetened almond milk or soy milk and it tastes decent. However, it does not curb my appetite at all and I do not feel like I am getting any leaner muscle. Actually, my muscle mass looks bigger now and I hate that! I am a girly girl and I do not want to look all muscley. I just want to be lean and trim. So, what do I do? I can't use it as a meal replacement, I can't use it every day or I will get all bulky, and it doesn't even taste that great. Overall, I'd say, "Girls, if you are looking for a good protein powder product consider what I have said in all honesty and then figure out what's best for you." To me it was not worth it.

    I have been drinking the vanilla chai which, I have to say, is the best tasting shake mix I've ever purchased. I usually mix it into a smoothie with ice and almond milk. I use it as a meal replacement but it doesn't curb hunger at all. I have been eating healthy snacks in between meals. Additionally, I just don't think it is worth the price compared to other similar shakes. It's not a very large jar and other products sells for $10 to $15 less. Unless you find the taste of other shakes unbearable, I recommend passing on this one.

    I use this in making sauces for my pancakes, in my pancakes, in shakes, and any where i can! It is weet so if you dont want it sweet this is not for you but it does a great job in sweetening up a smotthis when the fruit is a little tart!

          This protein tastes great, mixes well in water or almond milk. The protein amount per serving is poor, especially since I take at least 3o g, so the price is way too high since there is only 22 servings. I really like the greens and the probiotics that have been added to this protein.
