Health Notes

L-Tyrosine

L-Tyrosine
  • Reliable and relatively consistent scientific data showing a substantial health benefit.
  • Contradictory, insufficient, or preliminary studies suggesting a health benefit or minimal health benefit.
  • For an herb, supported by traditional use but minimal or no scientific evidence. For a supplement, little scientific support.

Our proprietary "Star-Rating" system was developed to help you easily understand the amount of scientific support behind each supplement in relation to a specific health condition. While there is no way to predict whether a vitamin, mineral, or herb will successfully treat or prevent associated health conditions, our unique ratings tell you how well these supplements are understood by the medical community, and whether studies have found them to be effective for other people.

For over a decade, our team has combed through thousands of research articles published in reputable journals. To help you make educated decisions, and to better understand controversial or confusing supplements, our medical experts have digested the science into these three easy-to-follow ratings. We hope this provides you with a helpful resource to make informed decisions towards your health and well-being.

This supplement has been used in connection with the following health conditions:

Alcohol Withdrawal

(Glutamine, Multivitamin, Phenylalanine, Tryptophan)
Refer to label instructions 1 star[1 star] In double-blind research, alcoholics treated with L-tyrosine combined with DLPA (D,L-phenylalanine), L-glutamine, prescription L-tryptophan, plus a multivitamin had reduced withdrawal symptoms and decreased stress.
Parkinson's Disease
Refer to label instructions 1 star[1 star] L-tyrosine is the direct precursor to L-dopa and therefore could be an alternative to L-dopa therapy, however, it should not be taken with L-dopa as it may interfere with L-dopa transport to the brain.

L-tyrosine is a nonessential amino acid (protein building block) that the body synthesizes from phenylalanine, another amino acid. Tyrosine is important to the structure of almost all proteins in the body. It is also the precursor of several neurotransmitters, including L-dopa, dopamine, norepinephrine, and epinephrine.

    Comments about GNC L-Tyrosine 500:

I have an adrenal deficiency, causing me to suffer from chronic fatigue. I've tried everything - B vitamins, medications, supplements, diet changes (even incorporating hard-to-find foods), cleanses - anything that I heard might help. The best combination I've found is 1500mg L-Tyrosine (which is not made, as far as I can find - I have to buy the 1000mg and the 500mg) 2x daily in conjunction with my medications. The GNC brands are the ones I have kept coming back to - their supplements seem to be high quality. Plus, they offer both the 1000mg and the 500mg. All others are 750mg, maximum.

I use this because I work a lot of Overtime and don't get as much sleep as I would like. I feel better since I've been using it, as though I have more energy after running on less sleep.

I used this product in conjunction with others recommended to me by a GNC employee to regulate my thyroid and beat symptoms of depression. The last time I had my (previously hypo) thyroid tested, the results came back normal! No synthetic drugs for me!

            Comments about GNC L-Tyrosine 500:

I researched for something to increase Dopamine and Serotonin levels. 5HTP and L-Tyrosine were recommended, as well as St John's Wort, L-DOPA and Kava Kava. Suggest to try half the 500mg tablet at first with empty stomach to see your tolerance level or reactions to the supplement. I tried the 500mg dosage with 5 HTP and St John's Wort. Kava Kava and L-DOPA are going to be my next on list to try...

              Comments about GNC L-Tyrosine 500:

I really don't get why you haven't listed this under aids for depression.. so many people benefit from using either this or it's precursor Phenylalanine. (L-Phenylalanine keeps me up at night so I found this easier on my sleep schedule) Anyway, great to take 500 mg 2x per day on an empty stomach (amino acids shouldn't be taken within an hour before or after protein of any kind).

I have a low thyroid condition. The meds my doctor gives me are not enough. So I take 2 pills a day of this product. It gives me a low but long burst of energy so I can do things all day. My German Sheppard dog has Crushing disease. I give her one half a tablet everyday day. It has helped keep her alive and doing well. it also helps to keep our weight down. Wonderful to use.
