Health Notes

Horse Chestnut

Horse Chestnut
This nutrient has been used in connection with the following health goals
  • Reliable and relatively consistent scientific data showing a substantial health benefit.
  • Contradictory, insufficient, or preliminary studies suggesting a health benefit or minimal health benefit.
  • For an herb, supported by traditional use but minimal or no scientific evidence. For a supplement, little scientific support.

Our proprietary "Star-Rating" system was developed to help you easily understand the amount of scientific support behind each supplement in relation to a specific health condition. While there is no way to predict whether a vitamin, mineral, or herb will successfully treat or prevent associated health conditions, our unique ratings tell you how well these supplements are understood by the medical community, and whether studies have found them to be effective for other people.

For over a decade, our team has combed through thousands of research articles published in reputable journals. To help you make educated decisions, and to better understand controversial or confusing supplements, our medical experts have digested the science into these three easy-to-follow ratings. We hope this provides you with a helpful resource to make informed decisions towards your health and well-being.

Sprains and Strains
Dose: Apply a 2% gel every two hours

Horse chestnut contains a compound called aescin that acts as an anti-inflammatory and reduces edema (swelling with fluid) following trauma, particularly sports injuries, surgery, and head injury.1 A topical gel containing 2% of the compound aescin found in horse chestnut is widely used in Germany to treat minor sports injuries, including sprains and strains.2 The gel is typically applied to affected area every two hours until swelling begins to subside.

Hemorrhoids
Dose: Take a standardized herbal extract providing 90 to 150 mg aescin daily

Horse chestnut extracts have been reported from a double-blind trial to reduce symptoms of hemorrhoids.1 Some doctors recommend taking horse chestnut seed extracts standardized for aescin (also known as escin) content (16-21%), or an isolated aescin preparation, providing 90 to 150 mg of aescin per day.

Wound Healing
Dose: Apply topically

Horse chestnut contains a compound called aescin that acts as an anti-inflammatory and reduces edema (swelling with fluid) following trauma, particularly sports injuries, surgery, and head injury.1 A topical aescin preparation is popular in Europe for the treatment of acute sprains during sporting events.

Chronic Venous Insufficiency
Dose: Standardized extract providing 50 mg aescin two to three times per day

According to an extensive overview of clinical trials, standardized horse chestnut seed extract, which contains the active compound aescin, has been shown to be effective in double-blind and other controlled research, supporting the traditional use of horse chestnut for venous problems.1 In these trials, capsules of horse chestnut extract containing 50 mg of aescin were given two to three times daily for CVI. The positive effect results in part from horse chestnut's ability to strengthen capillaries, which leads to a reduction in swelling.2

Varicose Veins
Dose: Refer to label instructions

Horse chestnut seed extract can be taken orally or used as an external application for disorders of venous circulation, including varicose veins.1 Preliminary studies in humans have shown that 300 mg three times per day of a standardized extract of horse chestnut seed reduced the formation of enzymes thought to cause varicose veins.2 Topical gel or creams containing 2% aescin can be applied topically three or four time per day to the affected limb(s).

Edema
Dose: Refer to label instructions

Aescin, isolated from horse chestnut seed, has been shown to effectively reduce post-surgical edema in preliminary trials.1, 2 A form of aescin that is injected into the bloodstream is often used but only under the supervision of a qualified healthcare professional.

Parts Used & Where Grown

The horse chestnut tree is native to Asia and northern Greece, but it is now cultivated in many areas of Europe and North America. The tree produces fruits that are made up of a spiny capsule containing one to three large seeds, known as horse chestnuts. Traditionally, many of the aerial parts of the horse chestnut tree, including the seeds, leaves, and bark, were used in medicinal preparations. Modern extracts of horse chestnut are usually made from the seeds, which are high in the active constituent aescin (also known as escin).

I was really suffering from phlebitis pain. My mom told me about this and I went out to get it a few days later. I then researched and saw that it was worth buying to try it. I'm glad I did!! I had relief in the second day of taking the capsules (two per day). Get this! You'll thank my review. I'm going to tell my doctor about it too - its better to take something natural like an herb. Less damage to the body from pharmaceuticals. :)

My doctor recommended horse chestnut extract for my swollen ankles. He told me that he doesn't usually recommend herbal supplements, but that there are a number of peer-reviewed studies on this.
I have found it to be helpful, and the swelling has been reduced considerably.
This is not the easiest supplement to find. GNC's pricing is better than anywhere else I have found it, especially when they have a promotion.
I would definitely recommend this to anyone with swollen ankles/calves.

I have tried diuretics and even changed my diet to help with leg swelling but this was the only relief I have found!! I usually have lower leg edema 2 weeks prior to menses begin. I take 2-4 capsules/ day as directed and now am cured from "cankles". This product really works!

I bought this because it was recommended on a recent episode of Dr. u know who. He said it would reduce spider veins in 2 weeks. I was skeptical but thought what the heck. I was pleasantly surprised that he was right. The veins aren't gone but they are much finer in appearance and not as itchy. I'll keep using it.

So, I am only 22 years old. I am VERY active. Two years ago I had Sclerotherapy surgery due to some vericose veins in my leg. My deep vein was closed and the vericose veins were removed. However, a little over a year later. I started to notice them returning. I WAS SO MAD. Since I didn't really feel like going through that surgery again, or paying the price for it, I looked for other remedies. I found extremely great reviews for this product and decided to try. Cheap. Available in a lot of health stores. I tried it. Instantly, and I mean INSTANTLY, I saw results. My veins no longer bulge, and are slowly becoming normal again. My legs do no ache as much ( I didn't even realize that the pain was from circulation issues, but after taking this I realized it was) I was disgusted at the thought of compression stockings, as they suck and are so so hot. I am so so relieved to find that this product was so effective. The ONLY side effect is slight nausea if you take it on an empty stomach. The dose is 2 pills, twice a day. I began to split it into 4 separate doses. If you have circulation problems. TRY THIS. YOU WILL NOT REGRET IT. It is the cheapest way to go. I am going to try Bark extract too, I want to completely improve my vasculature and I know this will do it. Hope this helps!

Heard about this product from Dr. Oz for use to combat varicous/spider veins. 300 mg daily was recommended. I have been taking it for less than a week but I believe the stinging pain associated with spider vein development has lessened. I will continue taking one capsule daily for as long as the price remains relatively stable. I have nothing negative to say ... so far so good.

Comments about GNC HERBAL PLUS STANDARDIZED GNC Herbal Plus® Standardized Horse Chestnut:

I have taken this for about 3 weeks. I did some research. It seems that the recommendation is to take it for a few days & then wait a few days. The major immediate impact was that this is a powerful diuretic. In my situation, I can't be running to the bathroom all the time. But the "literature" says this is an important aspect of helping your veins & arteries. I guess I was expecting a miracle cure, but in reality, I have just experienced it as a mega diuretic. One thing I will add....when I take it, I seem to have less hair fall-out. If you're dealing with hyper-thyroidism, this might be very helpful. Alas, I am not a biochemist and when you elect to treat yourself, you have to be willing to accept experimental results. One thing: GNC is really safe. This stuff could be toxic, but GNC is safe.
