Health Notes

Whey Protein

Whey Protein
This nutrient has been used in connection with the following health goals
  • Reliable and relatively consistent scientific data showing a substantial health benefit.
  • Contradictory, insufficient, or preliminary studies suggesting a health benefit or minimal health benefit.
  • For an herb, supported by traditional use but minimal or no scientific evidence. For a supplement, little scientific support.

Our proprietary "Star-Rating" system was developed to help you easily understand the amount of scientific support behind each supplement in relation to a specific health condition. While there is no way to predict whether a vitamin, mineral, or herb will successfully treat or prevent associated health conditions, our unique ratings tell you how well these supplements are understood by the medical community, and whether studies have found them to be effective for other people.

For over a decade, our team has combed through thousands of research articles published in reputable journals. To help you make educated decisions, and to better understand controversial or confusing supplements, our medical experts have digested the science into these three easy-to-follow ratings. We hope this provides you with a helpful resource to make informed decisions towards your health and well-being.

Athletic Performance
Dose: 20 grams daily up to 1.2 grams of per 2.2 of pounds body weight per day

Animal studies suggest that whey protein can increase gains in lean body mass resulting from exercise.1 A controlled trial found that six weeks of strength training while taking 1.2 grams of whey protein per 2.2 of pounds body weight per day resulted in greater gains in lean body mass, but improved only one out of four strength tests.2 Another controlled study found that people taking 20 grams per day of whey protein for three months performed better on a test of short-term intense cycling exercise than people taking a similar amount of milk protein (casein).3 However, a double-blind trial found that men taking 1.5 grams per 2.2 lbs of body weight per day of predigested whey protein for 12 weeks along with a strength training exercise program gained only half as much lean body mass and had significantly smaller increases in strength compared with men using a similar amount of predigested casein along with strength training.4 A controlled study of HIV-infected women found that adding whey protein to strength training exercise was no more effective than exercise alone for increasing strength or improving body composition.5

Osteoporosis
Dose: Refer to label instructions

Some whey proteins may reduce bone loss.1 Milk basic protein (MBP) is a mixture of some of the proteins found in whey protein. A preliminary trial found that 300 mg per day of MBP improved blood measures of bone metabolism in men, suggesting more bone formation was occurring than bone loss.2 A double-blind trial found that women taking 40 mg per day of MBP for six months had greater gains in bone density compared with those taking a placebo.3 No osteoporosis-related research has been done using complete whey protein mixtures.

Obesity
Dose: Refer to label instructions

Whey protein may aid weight loss due to its effect on appetite. In a preliminary study, people were given 48 grams of either whey protein or milk protein (casein). Whey consumption resulted in more hunger satisfaction and reduced the amount of food eaten 90 minutes later compared with casein consumption.1 However, a double-blind study found that men taking 1.5 grams per 2.2 lbs body weight per day of whey protein for 12 weeks along with a low-calorie diet and a strength training exercise program lost the same amount of weight and body fat as did a control group that followed a similar program, but took a casein supplement instead of whey protein.2

Whey protein is a mixture of some of the proteins naturally found in milk. The major proteins found in whey protein include beta-lactoglobulin and alpha-lactalbumin. Whey protein has one of the highest protein digestibility-corrected amino acid scores (PDCAAS; a measure of protein bioavailability) and is more rapidly digested than other proteins, such as casein (another milk protein). 1

Comments about NATURES BEST Nature's Best® Isopure Zero Carb - Creamy Vanilla:

I bought the Mango Peach Zero Carb protein. Straight off, I was amazed just how smooth the powder was. I also use AMP Ripped protein and this is far smoother. I mix a scoop of this protein in a blender bottle with water and use it as an easy meal additive or occasional snack. The powder is so smooth that it tastes more like flavored water than a shake as I had grown accustomed to with my other shakes.

I still use my AMP protein after workouts, but I use this at least twice per day. I will be purchasing more flavors.

Comments about NATURES BEST Nature's Best® Isopure Zero Carb - Creamy Vanilla:

I usually buy Isopure Dutch Chocolate but wanted to switch things up a little. Isopure whey is great for adding protein to your meals without the extra fat and calories. In a shaker jar, mix one scoop with unsweetened almond milk (for only 30 extra calories), let it sit for 20 minutes and wow! It tastes like a vanilla milkshake. Put some in your oatmeal. Add instant coffee or matcha (green tea powder) to your shake for an extra boost of flavor and energy.

I love Isopure products because they taste great, are low in carbs and have added vitamins. Don't worry about the sodium because it's offset by double the amount of potassium to help keep electrolytes in balance. I tried other protein powders but always come back to Isopure because it's not overly sweet and doesn't thicken when it stands. Nature's Best is THE BEST!

Picked this up at GNC today with my husband and WOW. Made a shake for dinner to get started, mixed with about a cup of strawberries, half a banana, and 4 oz. 1% milk (with about 6 oz. water). This is SO DRINKABLE. It tastes so light and fluffy, not sickeningly sweet like many MANY others I've tried. Also its extra smooth textured. I will report back on effectiveness; I'm planning to use one scoop at breakfast and dinner in a shake for weight loss and to aid my workout regimen.

I expected this to not taste good at all and expected for the worst. I was dead wrong and amazed how it tasted pretty darn good with water and if you can't handle the taste use fat free milk or unsweetened almond milk that makes it taste even better and like a milk shake! I don't feel as sore as I use to when I didn't consume Whey protein. This is definitely worth the buy!

Comments about NATURES BEST Nature's Best® Isopure Zero Carb - Creamy Vanilla:

I'm on the Atkins Diet and wanted to increase my protein intake without adding any carbs. I read a few reviews where other buyers said the product was hard to mix and didn't taste very well, but I decided to try it anyway as I really was more concerned about getting more protein to incorporate with my daily workouts than the taste.

I must say that I don't know what people are complaining about. I mix this product with water in a blender bottle and it mixes very well. The powder is a fine consistency so it mixes very well. I also love the taste, it tastes just like a vanilla milkshake. I was worried that being low carb would mean it would taste terrible, but I must say that it really tastes very well.

The label suggests that you mix 2 scoops with 12 oz of liquid, but I only use 1 as I don't really need 50 grams of protein just yet, but 1 scoop does the trick.

The only complaint I have is that the product is on the pricey side. Luckily, it was on sale when I got it, so I plan to keep an eye out and get more when it goes on sale, but overall, I like this product and will continue to use it.

I bought this brand by a miricle. I went to GNC, it was on sale, so I figured I would try it. From a person that knows what taste good, this is it. Everything you blend it with taste great! Even alone it taste great. And the fact that it has no carbs is insane. This is simply great.

When mixing in an 8-12 ounce glass, you do get some buildup on the spoon, but not too bad. The price is fairly reasonable but all supplements are expensive these days. Tastes great!
