Demystifying Detox Programs

Demystifying Detox Programs
Demystifying Detox Programs: Main Image
There is no official definition, but the idea is to cleanse the body of damaging substances, including air and water pollutants, pesticides, herbicides, solvents, and other industrial and agricultural chemicals

Detoxification programs are based on the idea that the body functions poorly when harmful substances build up in the body. Proponents of detoxification attribute a wide range of symptoms, from fatigue and headaches to allergies, sinus problems, bloating, weight gain, and dull skin and hair, to toxin exposure and build up.

There is no official definition of what constitutes a detoxification program, but the general idea is to cleanse the body of damaging substances, which can include air and water pollutants, pesticides, herbicides, solvents, and other industrial and agricultural chemicals. Most programs recommend people also avoid alcohol caffeine, sugar, artificial sweeteners, and food additives.

What the advocates say

Many supporters of detoxification acknowledge the lack of scientific evidence behind the approach, but point out that people often report increased energy, clearheadedness, and a general feeling of well-being afterwards. When approached correctly, advocates claim a good detoxification program can jumpstart weight loss, identify food sensitivities, increase energy, and empower people to adopt healthier eating and lifestyle habits. Juicing programs where a person fasts but continues to drink nutrient-rich raw juices are thought to provide energy and help cleanse the colon and liver.

What the critics say

There is little or no scientific evidence to support claims that the approach improves health, and the symptoms for which detox programs are prescribed is so vague that it's often impossible to know the cause or whether detoxification really is a cure. Further, some practices related to detoxification, such as colonics, may affect a person's electrolyte balance, which has caused some doctors to warn against it. Another approach for detoxification, taking laxative herbs, has been reported to disturb healthy digestive tract bacteria needed for digestion and immunity, and cause loss of important minerals, such as sodium, potassium, and magnesium.

Detox dos and don'ts

If used with care, detoxification programs may help you feel better and get health habits back on track. Many of the safest practices simply involve eating foods that are well-known to support a healthy digestive system and colon, or to stimulate bile production (a sign your liver is working well) in everyone. Use the following tips to decide if and when detoxification is right for you.

  • Consult a professional. Talk to your doctor before you add any dietary supplements to your self-care plan. This is especially important if you have chronic conditions such as heart disease, high blood pressure, or diabetes.
  • Avoid aggressive approaches. Do your research and talk with experienced, reputable practitioners before considering more aggressive detoxification practices, such as colonics and the use of strong laxative products, as these practices are associated with potential side effects.
  • Weed out offenders. Many detox diets advise that you cut out caffeine, alcohol, white sugar and flour, artificial sweeteners and all processed foods. We all would do well to follow this advice.
  • Conquer caffeine. A complete ban on caffeine can lead to withdrawal symptoms, including nasty headaches. Instead of going cold turkey, slowly decrease caffeine intake in the lead-up to your full detoxification program.
  • Be a label reader. If you try detoxification products, read the label carefully and follow all instructions. Taking more than the recommended dose may cause unpleasant and potentially harmful side effects.
  • Note ingredients. Any detox product that contains laxative ingredients such as senna, slippery elm, or psyllium will move waste more quickly through your colon and out of the body. These products also may remove medications, and if a medication passes through too quickly, it may not work as intended.
  • Focus on food. To get the most of any detox product, clean up your diet, too. Fresh vegetables and fruit should cover two-thirds of your plate. Include cruciferous vegetables, such as broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, Brussels sprouts, kale, chard, kohlrabi, bok choy, collard greens, turnips, rutabaga, mustard greens, radishes, and watercress, which contain nutrients that bolster the liver's ability to detoxify chemicals.
  • Drink up. You'll need fluids to digest the extra fiber you may be eating. If your urine is pale yellow or straw-colored, you're getting enough water. Any darker than this and you need to drink more.

Comments about GNC Preventive Nutrition® Complete Body Cleansing Program:

I took the porduct as directed. It did not do any "clensing". The pills and drink were disgusting, and I did not lose any weight or did it do any clensing of my body to make me feel any better.
Never wrote a review before--but this is definitely not worth buying

Comments about GNC Preventive Nutrition® Complete Body Cleansing Program:

I bought the product but wasnt ready to start the cleanse upon purchase. I had to change my shopping list to accommodate the plan. I realized that I needed to incorporate cleaner foods and minimize processed junk. (For example, I substituted crackers for rice cakes and used natural fruit jelly rather than salsa or dips). Starting my second week on the recommended diet plan, Ive noticed a signifcant drop in bloating in my midsection (problem area) but I am a bit more fatigued than anticipated. It is a plan that is easy to follow but adjustments have to made to capture the essence of the cleanse.

Comments about GNC Preventive Nutrition® Complete Body Cleansing Program:

First time using a cleanse, talked in detail with salesperson in store. Does nothing that the product says it does. The A.M Fiber prebiotic is best mixed with orange juice, no flavor or smell so easily tolerated. Both packets of pills are large, but easy to take with no bad taste. I have had small and limited BM's. I will get the feeling that I have to go and only produce a small amount and only 2 times a day. I am gassy throughout the day. I did not follow the suggested food plan, but did make healthy food choices. NOTHING!! I was taking Garcinia Cambogia prior to this for weight loss and had large quantity BM's about 3x's a day with no gas or bloating. This product was a waste of time and money. Will be utilizing the GNC money back guarentee.

I am giving an honest review of this product. I have read several from people that were disappointed they didn't loose weight. NOWHERE on the package does it say WEIGHT LOSS CLEANSE! It is a wellness cleanse that removes the toxins from your body. I did feel it did exactly what I thought it would and am overall happy with my purchase. The side effects that I had while taking it were: Feeling bloated, my hands and feet were swollen, and I had cramping.

Comments about GNC Preventive Nutrition® Complete Body Cleansing Program:

I bought this product after discussing several other options with an in store professional. The only thing that was honest in what he said was that if mixed with OJ the drink portion was at least tolerable. Other than that, I would recommend looking elsewhere. Felt no difference in my body at the end of the seven days. Limited bowel movement. Most importantly, after the seven days, purchased an at home test to see if the product at least cleaned me out and to no surprise it did not. I followed the instructions to the letter, and I feel as though I wasted not only my money, but my time. This is the first online review I have ever written in my life and only did so to emphasis my level of dissatisfaction with the product. Not here to bash, just sharing my experience with the product. Very disappointed in GNC this time.

Comments about GNC Preventive Nutrition® Complete Body Cleansing Program:

I just started this product as of Friday march 21. Yes the pills were horrible and i made the mistake of putting the whole pack in my mouth. I had to spit it out and take them one by one which made it even worse. but i managed to choke them down. I have to say for those who are saying they didnt like it/ it made them feel bad... that probably means its working. Honestly nothing in these pills make them harmful or bad for your body.. its not like Rx pill that actually have bad side effects. This is all stuff you find in food and nature. So if your feeling bad your body is probably trying to cleanse you. I have constipation issues. So having soft easy BM is an everyday struggle for me. Im trying to lose some weight. Inches maybe like 5 pounds. After this cleanse im gonna do hydroxycut. I might not do it for a full 30 days mayb 15 days or so. but well see. I dont really react to caffine, so it shouldnt be too hard. but Im not planing to do it for long. Trust me ppl put worse things in there body.

I didn't not purchase this in hopes to loose weight. I purchased this to do a full body cleanse. It was my understanding that a full body cleanse worked in one way by makeing have more frequent BM but it my case it did just the opposite. I am on day six and I have had a total of 2 BM. It also has just made me very very gassy. As far as the rest of it maybe it has done something I am not sure. I enjoy exercising and running. I read a lot of review where people had said that they overall felt better and had more energy. I personally have felt horrible and did not even feel like getting up to go run. I have purchased other items from GNC and have been very pleased but as far as the 7 day cleanse goes I will never purchase it again. It has not done anything but made me feel worse!

I am on my second day so maybe its too soon to tell but both yesterday and today I had nice, bulky, easy to pass BM's which is very unusual for me.
I definitely feel like I have more energy today as well. I dont particularly like the taste of the dissolvable fiber pack but I am used to taking large vitamins so those havent been an issue. I dont expect weight loss persay. I was looking for a cleanse and I feel like a I found a gentle yet effective one. I am considering buying for my 15 year old who suffers from IBS.
