Fuel your body more effectively, and get the most from your workouts
Do you ever feel you're slogging through your workouts, barely able to complete what you've planned, and anxious to hit the showers? Or maybe you've wondered how you might take the next step, fuel your body more effectively, and get the most "bang for your buck" from your workouts. Either way, a great place to start is with the basics, and one of the most basic nutrients for optimal athletic performance is protein.

The A, B, Cs of protein and performance

Muscles are made of protein, so it's no surprise that protein is vital to enhancing their performance. Knowing what type, how much, and when to fit protein into your daily routine is the key to getting the most from this important nutrient.

Protein particulars

"Wheying" your options

For repairing hardworking muscles after a cardio or resistance training ("weight lifting") workout, nothing beats whey protein. Whey comes from dairy and allows your muscles to refuel effectively. Whey protein is found in powder form and comes in a variety of flavors, making it easy to incorporate into your diet. It can be stirred into yogurt, added to a smoothie, or mixed vigorously with water or another liquid in a lidded container.

The body best absorbs protein when eaten in amounts ranging from 15 to 30 grams in a single meal or snack. Unless you're a serious body-builder, there's no benefit to eating more than 30 grams of protein at one time.

Whey protein makes its way into muscles most efficiently when taken immediately after a workout, ideally within 30 minutes. Eating whey with carbohydrates promotes the movement of the protein from your bloodstream into your muscles as well. Aim for a ratio of 1 gram of protein for every 2 to 4 grams of carbohydrate.

As an example, combine whey powder to provide about 15 grams of protein in a blender with a banana, ice, and water. A large banana adds around 30 grams of carbohydrate and most whey powders contain a bit of carbohydrate as well. This gives you a finished smoothie with 2 to 3 grams of carbohydrate for every gram of protein-an ideal ratio.

HMB power

Amino acids are needed to build the various proteins used in the growth, repair, and maintenance of body tissues. Hydroxy-methyl butyrate, or HMB, is a breakdown product of leucine, of of the essential amino acids that are used as building blocks of protein. Studies have shown that HMB can improve strength and help the body maintain muscle mass. Ideally, HMB is used in conjunction with strength training to obtain the most benefit; it is not used to improve cardiovascular athletic performance.

Our bodies can make some HMB, but it isn't found in significant amounts in most foods, so taking a supplement is the best way to get enough HMB to enhance a resistance training routine.

The optimal amount of HMB is about 3 grams per day, but there isn't agreement on when to take it for best benefit. In order to avoid having HMB "compete" for absorption with whey protein, try taking this supplement in the morning, at bedtime, or about 15 to 30 minutes before a workout.

Final protein pointers

Be sure you're eating a good quality, well-balanced diet with plenty of vegetables, fruit, legumes (beans), and whole grains. Without these essential foods, all the whey protein and HMB in the world isn't going to do you any good. Think about creating a nutrient network in your body; they don't work well in isolation.

Also keep in mind that while whey and HMB are considered safe for most people, there are some who should not use these supplements, including people with impaired kidney or liver function. If you have questions about whether whey and HMB are safe for you, ask your doctor or pharmacist for guidance.

Comments about GNC Total Lean™ Lean Shake™ - Swiss Chocolate:

So I was impressed with the taste first, This is my first day of using the powder..I use it with Almond milk so I will see how it goes. The best part was that I was skeptical about the taste cause not alot of people like chocolate but i love chocolate and the Swiss Chocolate is perfect..I also combine it with fruit like a banana or blueberries to get fuller then I drink water throughout the day and snack...I will add a review in a couple of weeks lets see how this goes....

Comments about GNC Total Lean™ Lean Shake™ - Swiss Chocolate:

I began drinking these meal replacement shakes during my time at college. I never really had time to eat meals throughout the day of classes so I used the shakes as replacements. I first tried the vanilla bean shake. Now let me tell you, being someone who never had tried protein or meal replacement shakes before, I was nervous. At first the texture was odd to me, but I got over it. The vanilla bean shake mixed with water tastes exactly like cake batter(YUM!). I loved that shake for months and repurchased another tub.

A few weeks ago I saw GNC was having a sale on lean protein shakes, so I decided to also order a tub of the swiss chocolate and one of the strawberries & cream. I always mix my shakes with water to keep the calories down. The swiss chocolate shake does indeed taste like brownie batter, as I've read in other reviews. The swiss chocolate and the vanilla bean shakes are both very sweet, so if you are not into sugary foods this is not the shake for you.

The strawberries and creams shake was a different story. I was not impressed. It seemed very chalky and tasted like I was drinking medicine. I didn't even finish an entire shake. Do not waste your money on this flavor.

Comments about GNC Total Lean™ Lean Shake™ - Swiss Chocolate:

So far this is one of the best powders I've found for the cost. I've recently started subbing meals for these shakes twice a day (mostly breakfast and lunch.) Doing so can make the powder go really quickly. I average a container every two weeks, give or take a couple of days. I've only tried the chocolate though, so I'm not sure about the others.

The only thing I can say I don't like about the powder is how big the scoop is. I mix a little less than the recommended 2 scoops for 8 oz. I find that the full 2 scoops In a cup of water/almond milk makes it too thick. I typically mix about 3 to 3 1/2 scoops in 16 oz, and just drink 8 oz of it in the morning and the other 8 oz later for lunch.

i absolutely love the swiss chocolate flavor lean shake. i tried the french vanilla lean25 shake which i did not like at all and the vanilla bean lean shake which was okay, but the swiss chocolate one is like drinking straight brownie batter which I LOOVE. i drink one for breakfast and lunch every day and have seen lean muscle improvement and it curbs my hunger.

Yuck. I was looking for an alternative meal replacement shake after another popular brand gave me terrible stomach aches. This is not it. The texture was slimy and it was way, way overly sweet -- not surprising once I realized it was sweetened with sucralose. It did nothing to curb my appetite, which again, not surprising, since sucralose is known to stimulate appetite and not surpress. Come on GNC, cant we get a shake thats actually healthy??

I started using this meal replacement shake about 2 weeks ago and I have to say that I just love it! The swiss chocolate flavor is great. I also got a tub of vanilla(which I do not care for)so I am mixing 1 scoop of chocolate and 1 of vanilla to get rid of the vanilla tub :-/ I usually replace breakfast with this shake
                  here is my recipe:
                  4oz h20
                  4oz unsweetened almond milk
                  2 tablespoons of PB2
                  1/2 banana
                  --blend in a blender--
                  It tastes wonderful!

Comments about GNC Total Lean™ Lean Shake™ - Swiss Chocolate:

I have tried many diets before, previously before finding out about this product I was on Visalus, which worked for a good 6 months but after that it became way to expensive & stopped working and tasted horrible. I have always been very skeptical about GNC products, but after trying this product I realized there was no need. I cannot comment about whether I have lost any weight or not. But my starting weight was 132 lbs, & my goal is 115 by summer.

After 2 weeks of waiting my shake mixes finally came in, I was so eager to try the swiss chocolate that I tested it at 11pm. It was a bit difficult to mix, but I own a hand blender that is very portable so long as you have an outlet to plug it in; I tried it with unsweetened almond milk the first time around and it was so thick & yummy! The 2nd day I did the water & I was so impressed that it held its thick consistency even without milk! It is almost like drinking pudding. It is seriously the best shakes I have EVER tried! I actually crave these shakes now thats how good they are. I hope to be able to update the part on my weight loss in a week or so.

I don't understand how anyone could say these are poor tasting other than they must have zero motivation!

I also work out 5x a week rigorous cardio & prior to this I weighed in a hefty 250 lbs 5 years ago!

I am proof that shakes will get you to where you want to be!

Comments about GNC Total Lean™ Lean Shake™ - Swiss Chocolate:

Here's how you mix it so it doesn't taste like a powdery gloppy drink that goes down and triggers your gag reflex:

                    1) Put about 10-11 ounces of cold water in to a blender--not 8 like the thing says!! (this means take water and shake it with ice, get it from your refrigerator thing or get it from a jug in your refrigerator)
                    2) Then, add the two scoops of powder in to the blender.
                    3) Blend, liquefy, whatever. Scrape the globs of powder stuck on the side of the blender so that it gets mixed well too.
**tip: I add a handful of blueberries (I have small girl hands) to mine too. You could add half a banana if you wanted instead.
                    4) Pour into a blender bottle or a glass.
                    5) Add ice.
                    6) Shake (for blender bottle), stir (for glass).

                    BOOM!

Made this way, it's really pretty good. It even has a nice aftertaste. Anyways, this ISN'T a meal replacement. I'm hungry after--especially since it isn't very thick (because I added more water to get rid of the powdery-ness). So, I would use it as a post-workout snack.

About me/More info: I am lightly active, am trying to tone but have a hard time eating 1200 calories. This shake is great in that it keeps me satisfied but also helps alert my brain that I am hungry and it's time to eat.

I hate the taste whey protein isolate, and this one was a good alternative to the taste.

Hope this helps people who can't seem to figure out why people think it tastes good because it took a long time for me to figure out how to make it taste decent. Cheers!
