Fuel your body more effectively, and get the most from your workouts
Do you ever feel you're slogging through your workouts, barely able to complete what you've planned, and anxious to hit the showers? Or maybe you've wondered how you might take the next step, fuel your body more effectively, and get the most "bang for your buck" from your workouts. Either way, a great place to start is with the basics, and one of the most basic nutrients for optimal athletic performance is protein.

The A, B, Cs of protein and performance

Muscles are made of protein, so it's no surprise that protein is vital to enhancing their performance. Knowing what type, how much, and when to fit protein into your daily routine is the key to getting the most from this important nutrient.

Protein particulars

"Wheying" your options

For repairing hardworking muscles after a cardio or resistance training ("weight lifting") workout, nothing beats whey protein. Whey comes from dairy and allows your muscles to refuel effectively. Whey protein is found in powder form and comes in a variety of flavors, making it easy to incorporate into your diet. It can be stirred into yogurt, added to a smoothie, or mixed vigorously with water or another liquid in a lidded container.

The body best absorbs protein when eaten in amounts ranging from 15 to 30 grams in a single meal or snack. Unless you're a serious body-builder, there's no benefit to eating more than 30 grams of protein at one time.

Whey protein makes its way into muscles most efficiently when taken immediately after a workout, ideally within 30 minutes. Eating whey with carbohydrates promotes the movement of the protein from your bloodstream into your muscles as well. Aim for a ratio of 1 gram of protein for every 2 to 4 grams of carbohydrate.

As an example, combine whey powder to provide about 15 grams of protein in a blender with a banana, ice, and water. A large banana adds around 30 grams of carbohydrate and most whey powders contain a bit of carbohydrate as well. This gives you a finished smoothie with 2 to 3 grams of carbohydrate for every gram of protein-an ideal ratio.

HMB power

Amino acids are needed to build the various proteins used in the growth, repair, and maintenance of body tissues. Hydroxy-methyl butyrate, or HMB, is a breakdown product of leucine, of of the essential amino acids that are used as building blocks of protein. Studies have shown that HMB can improve strength and help the body maintain muscle mass. Ideally, HMB is used in conjunction with strength training to obtain the most benefit; it is not used to improve cardiovascular athletic performance.

Our bodies can make some HMB, but it isn't found in significant amounts in most foods, so taking a supplement is the best way to get enough HMB to enhance a resistance training routine.

The optimal amount of HMB is about 3 grams per day, but there isn't agreement on when to take it for best benefit. In order to avoid having HMB "compete" for absorption with whey protein, try taking this supplement in the morning, at bedtime, or about 15 to 30 minutes before a workout.

Final protein pointers

Be sure you're eating a good quality, well-balanced diet with plenty of vegetables, fruit, legumes (beans), and whole grains. Without these essential foods, all the whey protein and HMB in the world isn't going to do you any good. Think about creating a nutrient network in your body; they don't work well in isolation.

Also keep in mind that while whey and HMB are considered safe for most people, there are some who should not use these supplements, including people with impaired kidney or liver function. If you have questions about whether whey and HMB are safe for you, ask your doctor or pharmacist for guidance.

i loved it, i tried the meal plan for about a week and i didn't follow it to a T. I had the shakes for breakfast and lunch and i would have a little snack along with it. I always felt satisfied. Now i just have them for snack once in awhile or sometimes for lunch or after a work out. I really do love the taste.

Comments about GNC Total Lean™ Lean Shake™ - Swiss Chocolate:

I started using this meal replacement shake about 2 weeks ago and I have to say that I just love it! The swiss chocolate flavor is great. I also got a tub of vanilla(which I do not care for)so I am mixing 1 scoop of chocolate and 1 of vanilla to get rid of the vanilla tub :-/ I usually replace breakfast with this shake
      here is my recipe:
      4oz h20
      4oz unsweetened almond milk
      2 tablespoons of PB2
      1/2 banana
      --blend in a blender--
      It tastes wonderful!

I decided to go for it after reading the reviews on this site. I bought mine from Rite Aid because it was SLIGHTLY cheaper than GNC. The swiss chocolate is awful.. It even smells bad when you first open it. I mixed mine as directed and it was slimey and very thick and hard to swallow. I couldnt get through the first glass so I poured it out and mixed with milk instead of water and it still wasn't good. Yuck. For the price it definitely isnt worth even trying. Now I have an opened container sitting on my counter that'll never be used. Good luck..

Comments about GNC Total Lean™ Lean Shake™ - Swiss Chocolate:

I have tried many diets before, previously before finding out about this product I was on Visalus, which worked for a good 6 months but after that it became way to expensive & stopped working and tasted horrible. I have always been very skeptical about GNC products, but after trying this product I realized there was no need. I cannot comment about whether I have lost any weight or not. But my starting weight was 132 lbs, & my goal is 115 by summer.

After 2 weeks of waiting my shake mixes finally came in, I was so eager to try the swiss chocolate that I tested it at 11pm. It was a bit difficult to mix, but I own a hand blender that is very portable so long as you have an outlet to plug it in; I tried it with unsweetened almond milk the first time around and it was so thick & yummy! The 2nd day I did the water & I was so impressed that it held its thick consistency even without milk! It is almost like drinking pudding. It is seriously the best shakes I have EVER tried! I actually crave these shakes now thats how good they are. I hope to be able to update the part on my weight loss in a week or so.

I don't understand how anyone could say these are poor tasting other than they must have zero motivation!

I also work out 5x a week rigorous cardio & prior to this I weighed in a hefty 250 lbs 5 years ago!

I am proof that shakes will get you to where you want to be!

Comments about GNC Total Lean™ Lean Shake™ - Swiss Chocolate:

Here's how you mix it so it doesn't taste like a powdery gloppy drink that goes down and triggers your gag reflex:

            1) Put about 10-11 ounces of cold water in to a blender--not 8 like the thing says!! (this means take water and shake it with ice, get it from your refrigerator thing or get it from a jug in your refrigerator)
            2) Then, add the two scoops of powder in to the blender.
            3) Blend, liquefy, whatever. Scrape the globs of powder stuck on the side of the blender so that it gets mixed well too.
**tip: I add a handful of blueberries (I have small girl hands) to mine too. You could add half a banana if you wanted instead.
            4) Pour into a blender bottle or a glass.
            5) Add ice.
            6) Shake (for blender bottle), stir (for glass).

            BOOM!

Made this way, it's really pretty good. It even has a nice aftertaste. Anyways, this ISN'T a meal replacement. I'm hungry after--especially since it isn't very thick (because I added more water to get rid of the powdery-ness). So, I would use it as a post-workout snack.

About me/More info: I am lightly active, am trying to tone but have a hard time eating 1200 calories. This shake is great in that it keeps me satisfied but also helps alert my brain that I am hungry and it's time to eat.

I hate the taste whey protein isolate, and this one was a good alternative to the taste.

Hope this helps people who can't seem to figure out why people think it tastes good because it took a long time for me to figure out how to make it taste decent. Cheers!

Comments about GNC Total Lean™ Lean Shake™ - Swiss Chocolate:

I gained about 10-15 pounds over the span of last year (especially with the holidays) and decided not to wait until the official "New Year" to get started on shedding some pounds. I work full time, am a part time student, and carve out roughly an hour per day to get a workout in, so I've been looking for a good meal replacement shake for a while to help save on time.

Total Lean caught my eye because of the low calories. Additionally, I LOVED that it had calcium value since I don't drink milk and try to stay away from dairy products as I'm pretty sensitive to them. According to the ingredient list, there is whey in these shakes, but I haven't experienced any irritation now a week in with shakes 2x daily.

For taste, it's a protein shake--do you honestly expect it to be something you savor and crave? The Swiss Chocolate was the only flavor my GNC had in stock because of the BOGO NY sale, but I've actually been really impressed with it. The texture is the only thing I'm not a fan of, but that may have to do with mixing it with water. I've also noticed that it gives me an odd aftertaste, similar to the one I experience when I drink diet soda with artificial sweeteners, but it actually helps me to drink more water, which could be turned into a con. Chug it, choke it down, whatever you've gotta do, and go get your sweat on!

Now, for what everyone wants to see on shake reviews: the results. My starting weight was 135, I'm now down to 130 after just a week in. I've been doing cardio/strength circuit training 6x a week and have been sticking to a 1,200-kcal diet.

I've tried SlimFast shakes, which more the less was just like an added chocolate milk to my day--no appetite curb in the least bit, and I didn't get results because I wound up hungry and cheating (surprise!) Total Lean has helped to really curb my appetite while still providing my body with the nutrients it needs to perform optimally when working out at a very low kcal price--it's most definitely contributing to my weight loss, and I plan to stick with it. I use shakes post workout (a.m.) and for lunch, and it keeps me perfectly satisfied 'til dinner. I've also noticed that I'm eating a lot more moderate proportions now as well.

If you want to get extra pounds off fast so you can start working on building muscle tone/bulk, this is your shake.

I've had really good chocolate protein shakes and this was not one of them. I took it back and exchanged it.

Comments about GNC Total Lean™ Lean Shake™ - Swiss Chocolate:

This is a great product, the best tasting one in my opinion. Simple and quick, if you were to use as a meal replacement for breakfast and lunch you would definitely lose tons...I only use for breakfast.
