Power Up with Protein
Power Up with Protein
Fuel your body more effectively, and get the most from your workoutsDo you ever feel you're slogging through your workouts, barely able to complete what you've planned, and anxious to hit the showers? Or maybe you've wondered how you might take the next step, fuel your body more effectively, and get the most "bang for your buck" from your workouts. Either way, a great place to start is with the basics, and one of the most basic nutrients for optimal athletic performance is protein. The A, B, Cs of protein and performance
Muscles are made of protein, so it's no surprise that protein is vital to enhancing their performance. Knowing what type, how much, and when to fit protein into your daily routine is the key to getting the most from this important nutrient.
Protein particulars
"Wheying" your options
For repairing hardworking muscles after a cardio or resistance training ("weight lifting") workout, nothing beats whey protein. Whey comes from dairy and allows your muscles to refuel effectively. Whey protein is found in powder form and comes in a variety of flavors, making it easy to incorporate into your diet. It can be stirred into yogurt, added to a smoothie, or mixed vigorously with water or another liquid in a lidded container.
The body best absorbs protein when eaten in amounts ranging from 15 to 30 grams in a single meal or snack. Unless you're a serious body-builder, there's no benefit to eating more than 30 grams of protein at one time.
Whey protein makes its way into muscles most efficiently when taken immediately after a workout, ideally within 30 minutes. Eating whey with carbohydrates promotes the movement of the protein from your bloodstream into your muscles as well. Aim for a ratio of 1 gram of protein for every 2 to 4 grams of carbohydrate.
As an example, combine whey powder to provide about 15 grams of protein in a blender with a banana, ice, and water. A large banana adds around 30 grams of carbohydrate and most whey powders contain a bit of carbohydrate as well. This gives you a finished smoothie with 2 to 3 grams of carbohydrate for every gram of protein-an ideal ratio.
HMB power
Amino acids are needed to build the various proteins used in the growth, repair, and maintenance of body tissues. Hydroxy-methyl butyrate, or HMB, is a breakdown product of leucine, of of the essential amino acids that are used as building blocks of protein. Studies have shown that HMB can improve strength and help the body maintain muscle mass. Ideally, HMB is used in conjunction with strength training to obtain the most benefit; it is not used to improve cardiovascular athletic performance.
Our bodies can make some HMB, but it isn't found in significant amounts in most foods, so taking a supplement is the best way to get enough HMB to enhance a resistance training routine.
The optimal amount of HMB is about 3 grams per day, but there isn't agreement on when to take it for best benefit. In order to avoid having HMB "compete" for absorption with whey protein, try taking this supplement in the morning, at bedtime, or about 15 to 30 minutes before a workout.
Final protein pointers
Be sure you're eating a good quality, well-balanced diet with plenty of vegetables, fruit, legumes (beans), and whole grains. Without these essential foods, all the whey protein and HMB in the world isn't going to do you any good. Think about creating a nutrient network in your body; they don't work well in isolation.
Also keep in mind that while whey and HMB are considered safe for most people, there are some who should not use these supplements, including people with impaired kidney or liver function. If you have questions about whether whey and HMB are safe for you, ask your doctor or pharmacist for guidance.

Comments about GNC Lean Shake™ - Chocolate:
Today is my 3rd day using this as a meal replacement for breakfast. I used water and the cup GNC sells with the wire ball inside. I also mixed in a packet of the tangerine Emergen-C vitamin mix with it. Gave it a little bit more flavor and went well together. I have the raspberry Emergen-C too, so I might try this too for a little extra flavor.

Comments about GNC Lean Shake™ - Chocolate:
I got the packets of the Lean Shake because I am constantly on the go. And I got the shake bottle they sell at GNC which also works great! Today I ate the shake as a snack and made a smoothie out of it. I mixed the packet with 6oz of water instead of 8oz, added about a cup of ice, and half a banana in a blender. It was phenomenal! Comparable if not better than some of the drinks I've purchased at smoothie shops!
Overall, I think it's a great product :)Pros

Comments about GNC Lean Shake™ - Chocolate:
I use this as a meal replacement. I'm not into chocolate like most women, but the chocolate is very good. I usually mix with 50% almond milk and 50% water in the Blender, both with the choc and the cookies and cream.....both tasty...not quite as delightful with the 100% water. but still good...kinda taste like a milkshake to me, but then, I rarely drink a milkshake. AND make sure you always use COLD liquid to blend with the powder.... I also have the premixed strawberry. Its good but compared to the powders, it taste a little flat. I'm glad I purchased it for when I'm not at home.

Comments about GNC Lean Shake™ - Chocolate:
I bought the lean shakes because I was interested in trying something to curb my appetite. I snack all day but it's usually on the wrong things. The package states that it's a healthy meal replacement so I figured I'd give it a try and to my results it had worked. I did not like it unless the water was extremely cold!! I also used it with milk for a better taste. I do not like the Chocolate flavor, it's just not appealing to me. I do prefer the vanilla though. Overall I love them, and its great to use with the blender bottle!

Comments about GNC Lean Shake™ - Chocolate:
I used Skim milk to mix it with and it tasted awesome. I do mix it with one of those bullet blenders which makes it frothy and more like a shake. Heading to go get more.

Comments about GNC Lean Shake™ - Chocolate:
The chocolate lean shake was better than I expected. Usually these shakes are watery and nasty, but this actually thickens when you use really cold water and some crushed ice. I mix it in a shaker cup at work with crushed ice and in a blender at home with a banana or strawberries added. While it doesn't taste like a milk shake and some may find the taste a bit "off", I like the product and will buy again. It's a good quick meal or snack, before or after the gym.

Comments about GNC Lean Shake™ - Chocolate:
This was really good, much better than I expected. I have mixed it with water, and 2% milk, it was great either way. I started with the single pack to try it out, on my way to buy more!!

Comments about GNC Lean Shake™ - Chocolate:
Based on the reviews, I expected this to taste awful & hard to mix so I purchased a single packet in the store of both choc and vanilla. I thought they were both good and would certainly purchase again (can't say that for most meal replacement shakes). However, the chocolate is a bit more flavorful than the vanilla and I like it better. I mixed it in a shaker container w/some ice and water and I was pleasantly surprised. It mixed perfectly and tasted like a protein shake or meal replacement shake should. If you're expecting it to taste and have the consistency of a true milk shake, don't bash the product, it's possible that your expectations are off for this type of product.
I'd say, purchase the single pack and try it before you decide. Don't base your decision solely on the reviews. I only tried the two packets so I cannot attest to the effectiveness yet, although it was a great on-the-go breakfast replacement before work.
