Study says cognition in children may be enhanced by drinking water before a test
Could the key to a clearer mind be as simple as having a glass of water? A study published in the journal Appetite suggests that thinking function (cognition) in children may be enhanced by drinking water before a test.

Several studies have shown a link between hydration and thinking in adults, but less is known about the connection in children. What few studies have been conducted in this area indicate that water can help children who were purposely dehydrated to perform better on cognitive function tests that assess visual attention and visual memory.

The goal of the new study was to expand what is already known about dehydration and the capacity for clear thought in six- and seven-year-old children, by looking at the children in their natural hydration state. After completing a series of baseline cognitive function tests, 11 of the 23 children were given a 500-ml bottle of water (about two cups) and asked to drink as much as they wanted. The rest of the children were not offered water. About 45 minutes later, both groups of children completed the tests again.

Compared with the no-water group, measurements of cognitive function in the water-group children were significantly improved, including visual attention and visual search. "These results indicate that even under conditions of mild dehydration, children's cognitive performance can be improved by having a drink of water," said the study's authors. Drinking water also seemed to improve mood in the children, although the team said that while these results were novel, they weren't conclusive.

Water on the go

It's easy to skimp on water when you're out and about. Most experts agree that adults need about 64 ounces of water each day; children need somewhat less, depending on their size and activity level.

  • Make sure to bring along a reusable stainless steel water bottle to keep hydrated on the run.
  • Avoid reusing single-use plastic bottles (like those used for sale of bottled water), as these can break down and allow the plastic materials to leach into the water.
  • Look for bottles labeled "BPA-free." BPA, or bisphenol-A, is a hormone-disrupting chemical that is used widely in everything from baby bottles to the liners of canned foods. While the jury is out as to how toxic this chemical may prove to be, it's probably wise to avoid it when possible.

Comments about NATURES BEST Nature's Best® Isopure Zero Carb - Variety Pack:

Some of the reviews that complain about the flavor of these drinks are right - a whole lot of protein in one bottle with no real sugar can definitely be an issue. This is especially true when we live a life full of sugar and everything tasting yummy. I had a hard time with the Alpine Punch flavor and the Pineapple/Banana/and what else flavor. But with a lot of ice and sipping over time, they are okay - worth it for the protein they provide. Today I tried the coconut flavor and that is AWESOME. I mean, I would drink this flavor just for the heck of it, it's so great! Being a post-surgery bariatric patient, a lot of protein is critical for me, and better yet, the bottled kind that I can travel with, since you can't mix shakes very well in a hotel room. I definitely would recommend these to others - if the taste isn't all you're looking for, just remember that it's not loaded with sugar, ice helps, and the protein you get is well worth the fact that it's not the most tasty treat you've had in this lifetime. But the coconut comes close!

Comments about NATURES BEST Nature's Best® Isopure Zero Carb - Variety Pack:

Decent product. No carbs so if you're cutting it helps you watch the macros. Also very beneficial for people that favor ketosis diets. The taste, seeing as how it is still a dairy product (whey protein isolate), it does have a foul smell and somewhat foul taste. The flavor doesn't do all that much to mask the dairy aftertaste. I had some today before classes because I needed some quick protein (and also wanted to keep my carbs down because I just had a bag of skittles (deal with it)). Best advice to consume it? Pinch your nose and shotgun that bad boy. Very hard on the stomach though. 40g of protein hitting your stomach all at once with no need to physically break down fibers.

Comments about NATURES BEST Nature's Best® Isopure Zero Carb - Variety Pack:

Isopure drinks are an awesome option for consuming the enormous amounts of protein before and after weight loss surgery. They are a great alternative to milky protein shakes and love that they come in several flavors. They certainly beat the taste of the protein juice drinks by Nectar etc. I love when they are on sale!

MIx the drink half in half with cranberry juice or other juices will improve palatability greatly.Great for diabetics and digestive deseases and weightloss.Substitute foe fatty meat meals.Saves costs of meat and medical costs of relapses.Must remember that too much protein at once can be hard on kidneys and liver so try dividing it with many meals rather than just drink it all at once.Love you for saving my life.

My trainer recommended this for me, and I tasted it. It was easy to swallow, but I had the runs all day. Yes, even a few accidents! I'm not sure why because I can tolerate mixtures that I concoct at home; however, this one did a number on my stomach. My guts are still bubbling!

Got a bottle as a free sample. When I finally decided to try it I was so surprised and excited!! I was sooo tired of the protein shakes. The flavor is pretty tasteful and it comes in lots of choices. PLUS...you can't beat the 40 grams of protein in each bottle!! GNC often has buy 2 (or 3) and get 1 free. Love this stuff!!!! Perfect for weight loss surgery patients!

Purchased these to get protein in after gastric bypass. They do not taste good. Although they did go down a little better than protein powder. I drank it cold and could only get about five small sips down and had to stop.

This is a great product for weight loss surgery patients. If you are having trouble with appetite, or other issues, this is a great drink. It gives you 2/3's of your daily protein required. Plus it tastes like Koolaid. Just remember to refridgerate it before you drink it or pour it over ice.
