Fat burners encourage the body to use stored fat for energy, decrease the rate at which excess calories are turned into body fat, or enhance metabolism

While there isn't a standard definition for the phrase "fat burner," diet experts generally agree these are substances that

  • encourage the body to use stored fat for energy,
  • decrease the rate at which excess calories are turned into body fat, or
  • enhance metabolism-the rate at which the body burns calories.

Products or foods that suppress appetite or promote a feeling of fullness, such as fiber, are not true fat burners, though they may be labeled that way, and still may be useful aids to weight loss.

Tried and true

Several dietary supplements and natural substances have been studied for their fat-burning effects, including:

Green tea. Research has shown green tea supplements can promote modest weight loss-a few pounds in short-term studies of up to 12 weeks, when compared to placebo-and may help prevent weight regain. Catechins, one component of green tea, appear to have a variety of fat-burning effects, including increasing metabolism and the use of fat for fuel, and decreasing the rate at which body fat is created and stored. Green tea has a good track record of safe use.

Capsaicin. Capsaicin is the spicy-hot component of red chili peppers, and one randomized trial found that people lost twice the weight taking capsaicin compared with a placebo, over a 12-week period. The total effect was small, however: the capsaicin group lost about 2 pounds compared to a 1-pound loss in the placebo group. Capsaicin appears to increase metabolism, and supplements of up to 6 grams of capsaicin per day are considered safe and are well tolerated by most people.

L-carnitine. Our bodies make and use L-carnitine to transport fat within cells, so that the fat can be burned for energy. Studies support that L-carnitine supplements improve fat burning in the body, but clinical trials have yet to show a weight-loss benefit in obese people. L-carnitine may be useful for improving athletic performance, however, and up to 3 grams per day is considered safe.

New kids on the block

Raspberry ketones. When given to mice on a high-fat, high-calorie diet, raspberry ketones protected against excess weight gain and fat accumulation in the liver. Mice aren't people, however, so keep an eye out for future research, which should clarify what kind of effects raspberry ketones may have for weight-loss in people.

Bitter orange (Citrus aurantium). This product became more popular after the 2004 FDA ban on ephedra supplements. Bitter orange has effects similar to ephedra, including increasing metabolism, blood pressure, and heart rate, which can translate into weight loss. While bitter orange appears to be safe for short-term use-weeks, not months-in healthy adults, it also may have similar adverse effects as ephedra, so use it with caution if you have underlying health issues, such as heart disease, high blood pressure, or diabetes.

Thermogenics. Thermogenics refers to a broad category of substances that cause the body to produce heat through increased metabolism. Examples include fucoxanthin, a supplement derived from brown seaweed, and 7-KETO DHEA, a manufactured hormone that is related to, though not the same as, the naturally occurring human hormone DHEA. Even caffeine and green tea are considered to have some thermogenic action in the body. As with many fat-burning supplements, thermogenics can be safe for short-term use in healthy adults. However, if you have underlying health issues, such as heart disease, high blood pressure, or diabetes, you may need to steer clear of thermogenic weight-loss products.

Other ways to fight the fat

Fat burners may be worth a try, but if you have a pre-existing medical issue, such as diabetes, high cholesterol, kidney or liver disease, high blood pressure, or heart disease, check with your doctor before trying these products. And regardless of whether or not you add a fat burner to your weight management plan, there are many other steps you can take to kick start your metabolism and nudge the number on the scale in the desired direction.

Water. You may have heard it before, but it bears repeating: staying well hydrated can help with fat loss. Aim for 64 ounces of water per day and you'll likely feel better and may be less tempted to snack mindlessly. Other noncaloric options such as hot or iced tea or sparkling water count too.

Fiber. Fiber-from food and supplements-may be helpful to weight-loss efforts. Fiber will fill you up and has other health benefits too, such as lowering cholesterol. Focus on fiber-rich foods, such as whole grains and raw vegetables and fruit, and slowly add a fiber supplement, such as psyllium or inulin-a type of fiber which comes from chicory root-if desired. Don't forget the water, which your body needs to process the extra roughage.

Effective exercise. High-intensity interval training can burn lots of calories quickly. This kind of exercise involves going all out-so you're breathing hard enough that talking is difficult-for a short time, such as 30 to 60 seconds, followed by a minute or two of lower-intensity activity to recover. The cycle is repeated up to 10 times for a 20-minute workout. Alternate these workouts with regular physical activity throughout the week, and as your fitness improves, you can increase the high-intensity portion of the workout, and decrease the active rest period. If you aren't exercising regularly already, talk to your doctor before starting a high-intensity interval training workout plan.

    I'm female, 23 years old, 150lbs, 5'7"
    this product is too potent of a stimulant for me to take the recommended dosage of 2 tablets before my workout. I have to take one in the morning before breakfast and one a few hours later before my workout.
    That pattern of daily use produces a heightened level of focus on any task but doesn't make my heart rate skyrocket, and doesn't make me sweat as if I just did meth.
    I've not noticed this product doing anything for weight loss.
    Must pair it with moderate dieting and regular intense cardio to "lose weight" in the way most people think of "losing weight".

    This product is great. I was looking for a product that would help me with my workouts and i noticed a whole lot more energy when working out. I have also lost a couple of pounds even thought I was not looking for that but its a good add on. I have not noticed that it curbs my appetite. I have been using them for about a month and have to say that I will continue to use them because of how great they make me feel. The only con for me is the taste I make sure that I have a piece of gum or something tasty with it because I dont like the taste. Thats the only thing that I dont like about them. They do not make me jittery even when I drink coffee on a daily basis or when I take them on non work out days.Also when I do work out I make sure to take them 30 minutes before since I have noticed between 30 minutes to one hour and a half after taking them its when they really work the most. I definitely recommend these pills they really do work.

      I am someone who, unfortunately, see-saws up and down on the scale, despite working out regularly. A big part of my issue is my erratic work life, which can often call for 70-hour work-weeks. Burn 60 does, indeed, work. I notice a significant decrease in appetite when I take it in the morning, but it is especially effective when taken multiple days IN A ROW. It curbs my urge to stress-eat, or binge on whatever is handy in the middle of a 18-hour day. Again, I notice these effects much more powerfully if I take the pills for a few days in a row. However, I have not experienced any dramatic weight loss, as I have with some other pills.

                I was very worried that my trousers were getting tighter, even though I just increased the size of my trousers from a relatively new purchase. I thought I had to do something about it and somehow the local shopping mall and they had Burn 60(GNC) sale with a 30% discount. Im not a fan of GNC since ppl claimed it is just expensive due to the brand name. However, the first two tablets surprised me. There was a definite feeling of no hunger. It did curbed my appetite very well and I was cruising the days without any hunger feeling that much. I think the Meganatural Grape skin extract and Meganatural Gold grape seed extract in the tablet are really good and contributed to the potency of the tablet (these two Meganaturals GSE are not sold individually it seems at GNC/elsewhere). Meganatural BP are sold as an individual product to address BP problem; but when I used Meganatural BP, it didnt feel the same -- I even had blood sugar crashes with Meganatural BP, perhaps I didnt use Meganatural BP correctly/long enough, or it was not meant to function similar to Meganatural Gold GSE or Meganatural Grape Skin extract?.

                After about 2 wk, I used 7-keto with Burn 60 and it became a very potent combination that I had to limit using only 2 of this tab daily, plus the 7-keto (100mg, twice daily), else I cant sleep well due to the surge of energy. After about 5 weeks, I was able to see my waistline improvement and the new trousers felt loose 'as new', without cardio/exercise - just 7 keto, Burn 60 and limiting my carb intake, as I dont feel that hungry with the combination.

                A word of caution though, at least for me, when introducing Lactobacillus gasseri with the combo, the "blood sugar stabilising effect" disappeared; other probiotics did not seem to cause such effect. When I replaced L. gasseri with other brands of probiotics not having such strain, I regained the no-hungry feeling. When I added L. gasseri again to the regimen, the same abnormal hungry feeling returned. It could be me, but it could also be the interaction between the agents.

                I will be taking Burn 60 regularly for the GSE it has, and also to control my weight. I would recommend using this product due to its potency and integrity of the ingredients.

                  I like to take the product about 10 minutes before my workout. I do this so right in the middle of my workout when I really need my energy I can really push through it! Also, I only take this on days I am working out.

                    I take this on my work out days only. i love the feeling of energy that it gives. i also feel focused at work on the days that I do take it. I am a little sensative to caffeine, so if i don't do my full workout or run my full hour I do feel jittery since i haven't burned it all off. You will sweat like a pig, i personally like the feeling because it makes you feel like you are burning more caleries.

                    I take them close to 6am and by 12pm I still feel energized. i took them once in the evening around 5pm, and I couldn't sleep all night.

                    They mention that you can take them on non-workout days, but I have never tried that, since I feel I would be jumping off the walls.

                    i highly recommend it for the calorie burning part, I really haven't seen the appetite curbing though.

                    I work out in the evenings around 5-7PM I take 2 pills 30-60 mins before my workout and I have alot of energy to burn! I love it! I exercise 3-5 days a week for 45 mins I started excising on 7/31/2014 and as of today 8/25/2014 I have lost a total of 10 lbs. Since I do take the pills around 5-7 pm I cant sleep but that is my fault for taking the pills so late. I tried exercising at 5AM but taking the pills so early with food makes me nauseous . Evening work outs suites me best. I also drink 127 oz of water before heading home for my work out and that helps alot I drink the water through out the day that totals 127oz. I do not get hungry after i drink my pills so i kinda skip dinner ... Not every pill works for everyone I'm glad it works for me!
