Rice protein is extracted from rice and used in some protein supplements. Vegetarians may prefer it over protein supplements made from animal sources (such as whey or casein, which are milk proteins). Since rice is rarely involved in food allergies,1 rice protein may also be preferred by people with food allergies, and may be suitable to use in hypoallergenic infant formulas.2 Rice protein is not a complete protein, however, due to insufficient levels of the amino acids lysine and threonine.3, 4 Therefore, these amino acids are often added to rice protein products to correct this imbalance.

I chose this product among many whey protein products mainly because natural ingredients were used. Stevia leaf extract was used (shown on the bottle, not reflected on the supplement facts on the website) rather than other sweeteners such as sucrolose and acesulfame potassium that have been used in most other flavored products. I believe long term intake of the artificial sweeteners are harmful to our bodies. Two grams of sugar is ok for me because Chinese generally don't consume sugar as much as most Americans. However, the unit price of this product is kind of pricy and the cholesterol (18%) is higher, though I don't know if it's good cholesterol or bad. Our body needs cholesterol. As long as I am taking fish oil and doing exercise, I believe it's not a big deal. I'll have to wait until I do my annual blood test to say that for sure.
