Pumping Up? How to Pick Your Protein Supplement
Pumping Up? How to Pick Your Protein Supplement
Our protein supplement guide will help you excel on the court, in the gym, or on the roadIf you take your workouts seriously, nutrition should be top of mind too. Protein is a great place to start, and focusing on getting the right types of protein, in the right amounts, and at the right times is key. Our protein supplement guide will help you meet your wellness goals, potentially improving your performance on the court, in the gym, or on the road. What type?
Whey
Whey protein is quick to digest and provides all of the protein building blocks - the amino acids. Our bodies cannot make some amino acids, and whey is ideal for meeting essential amino acid needs. Whey also supplies branched-chain amino acids (BCAA), and some research supports that they aid muscle recovery after hard workouts.
Casein
Compared with whey, casein is slower to digest, and results in a lower, yet more prolonged rise in blood amino acid levels, which may provide a particular advantage for body builders. At least one study supports that casein outshines whey in terms of promoting strength and lean body mass gains in people following a structured weight-training plan.
Rice
Rice protein is less likely to create allergic reactions than other proteins, and it comes from a plant, making it appropriate for vegetarians. Another potential advantage is that rice protein contains a high proportion of arginine, an amino acid that can dilate blood vessels, possibly enhancing blood flow to muscles. Rice is not a "complete" protein however; it doesn't supply all of the essential amino acids. Some products combine rice protein with proteins from sources like soy or milk to make it complete.
Egg
Egg protein is ideal for people who are looking to build new muscle. It has a very high protein efficiency ratio (PER), which is one measure of how well our bodies can use any particular form of protein. The higher the PER, the more efficiently our bodies can use that protein when we eat it. Egg is off the charts in terms of PER. Egg protein also is a complete protein, and is a good source of essential and branched chain amino acids. Egg protein powder is made from egg whites, and comes in a convenient, pasteurized powder form.
Soy
Soy protein is a high-quality plant protein that provides all essential amino acids, making it a good option for vegetarians. For the body to best utilize soy protein, vegetarians should also eat grain or dairy within a few days. Soy protein comes in two basic forms: soy protein isolate and soy protein concentrate. Soy protein isolate is the most highly purified form, and has a minimum protein content of 90%. Soy protein concentrate contains more carbohydrates, and has a protein content of approximately 70%. Concentrates tend to cost a little less, but if you find soy protein concentrate doesn't agree with you, try isolate, which is easier for some people to digest.
How much?
With protein, as with many nutrients, more is not always better. According to Dr. Doug Paddon-Jones, Associate Professor at the University of Texas Medical Branch and Director of Exercise Studies, "30 grams of protein appears to stimulate maximum muscle synthesis. For athletes, each meal and snack is a chance to hit the 30 gram mark, giving your body several opportunities each day to maximize muscle growth and repair."
Another reason to spread protein evenly through the day is simple efficiency. "Given that your body won't use much beyond 30 grams of protein at a time, it doesn't make sense to load up with more than this," says Paddon-Jones.
When?
- Breakfast-To support muscle building first thing in the morning, try trading traditional carb-heavy breakfast foods for more protein-rich options, such as a powder protein supplement mixed with milk and cereal.
- If you're heading into a long strength-training session-Sipping a casein-based protein supplement prior to and during your workout will give muscles sustained access to amino acids. If taken in the evening, casein can provide a steady supply of amino acids while you're sleeping.
- Immediately pre- or post-workout-Especially if your workout includes aerobic or circuit training, protein manufacturers recommend a whey protein-based liquid or powder supplement.

This product is awesome. Works great but I only use it after my workout. Before is to heavy on your stomach especially if you do 1 hour of abs like I do. If you a slender person and want to get muscle in the right places... this is for you!
FYI buy the Vanilla better to make your own flavors/test than to pick a flavor like chocolate or coffee!- Gender:

Comments about ULTIMATE NUTRITION® Iso-Mass Xtreme Gainer - Chocolate Milk:
I am the classic super-skinny hard-gainer kid. People find it hard to believe now since i gained 40lbs (probably 30lbs of which is muscle) over the last one and a half years. I would have to attribute that to muscle memory (dropped 15 lbs post surgery), good diet, hard work, growing up and this product. I am now 20 and give this product my support.

Comments about ULTIMATE NUTRITION® Iso-Mass Xtreme Gainer - Chocolate Milk:
So I always read reviews before i buy products, and I was skeptical about this one because many "bad taste" and "fishy smell" reviews... I understand Everyone has diffrent tastes, but I just want to disprove this on my behalf, today I had my first serving (of the Vanilla IceCream flavor) and i Must say i Smelled NO fishy substance, and the shake actually tasted SUPER GREAT ! I told myself WOW I can DEFINITELY get used to drinking this 2-3 times a day ! Overall, do not let the taste and smell reviews intimidate you.. Its only been one day for me so I cant attest to physical gains but I will be back to complete the review soon !

1. Buy it and Use it faithfully everyday. I used 2 scoops prior and immediately after lafting, and one serving (3 scoops) on non training days.
2. Do NOT smell it. Smells like cat ur-ine with baking cocoa powder thrown in. Somehow, it tastes great.
3. Continue step one and watch the gains happen.Pros

Comments about ULTIMATE NUTRITION® Iso-Mass Xtreme Gainer - Chocolate Milk:
Looking at the ingredients, this is the most complete supplement for anyone wishing to gain muscle mass. But you have to actually work out to make the gains, or else you might just get fat. Also, this is an excellent value from GNC. I compared all similar products between GNC and a leading competitor, using amount of protein as the benchmark. This was clearly the best value for the ingredients and protein content. The drawbacks are very minor: 1. There is a funny smell to it, almost fishy, although there are no fish ingredients, and it certainly does not taste like fish. 2. The taste, to me, isn't the best but it is not the worst either. Anyway, if you ask me, taste should be secondary after the quality of ingredients. If you agree, then this is your product. I recommend using it an hour before your workout and immediately after your workout. Then, on non-workout days, use it for breakfast or a mid-afternoon snack.

Comments about ULTIMATE NUTRITION® Iso-Mass Xtreme Gainer - Chocolate Milk:
Bottom line, great product. i have been out the gym for a year now do to an injury but i'm back now. Before anything, i'm a dedicated person (5 days a week 90 mins). I'm 6'0 tall 170lbs, i was 204lbs before the accident, my goal is 200lbs. Been on it for a week, haven't weighed myself again because i only do that once a month, but you can tell the difference right away with recovery time and some muscle gain or pump. The only bad reviews i read was about the taste, here's a tip that you'll thank me for. Blend two scoops of original oatmeal alone, oce thats done add your three scoops of iso-extreme Chocolate milk, half of a banana, 2 tea spoons of peanut butter, 3 ice cubes and only 8 ounces of milk, and trust me, is going to taste like any regular milk shake, you wont even be able to smell the fish it contains.

Comments about ULTIMATE NUTRITION® Iso-Mass Xtreme Gainer - Chocolate Milk:
I bought this product literally 2 years ago when I use to work at a gym (receptionist) and had hopes of starting a workout routine. I was never consistent with my workout schedule and never saw results and due to the bad taste(yes, it does taste disgusting due to all the fish ingredients) it didn't take much time for me to drop the product and give up. I decided to start a legit workout schedule 5 weeks ago and I picked up the iso mass again since it's been sitting home for the past 2 years (didn't expire yet, don't worry lol) and I brushed off the taste; I considered it medication which no one can be picky over and just chugged it every time I made a shake. Now before I get to my results, let me just make it clear that all my life growing up I was always the skinny person in my group of friends, who were all decently big. My metabolism is too fast so despite how much I ate, gaining weight was always an issue. 5 weeks now into my workout schedule and I've surprisingly gained 10 pounds and I just finished the iso mass container. I started off at 126 pounds and now I'm at 136 which is extremely impressive because I haven't gained weight since freshmen year in high school-I'm a college graduate now. I work 8-5pm every day and hit the gym 5:30-7pm and take one serving (3 scoops) immediately after my workout with water. I haven't even tried to take 3 servings a day as the container suggests...the taste is too disgusting to take 1 time a day, let alone to try and take it 3. I did try taking it with milk a few times but I noticed it was very hard to drink because it was much more thicker than with water and it also upset my stomach really bad; water works great and I do no feel bloated or upset afterwards. I even play basketball immediately after drinking it and I don't have an issue, but that's just me.
So for those who are really considering to gain weight, honestly, if I can do it, so can you. Suck it up and don't let the bad taste stop you...trust me its worth the sacrifice! Hearing that my arms have grown and toned, my posture has improved with broader shoulders and a more popping chest is so worth 3 minutes of chugging a 16oz disgusting shake. Heck, take one of those small Listerine sprays or sheets and pop one into your mouth right after drinking it and you'll be fine! BUY THIS PRODUCT!Pros

Comments about ULTIMATE NUTRITION® Iso-Mass Xtreme Gainer - Chocolate Milk:
Ok, I haven't been on this long... But I will say you can KILL yourself with your workout but if you drink this immediatly after you won't feel a thing the next morning. About the taste, it taste just like chocolate milk... And it does make you feel sluggish, (that's why I drink it before bed) it does stink pretty bad, but C'mon people!! Are you trying to put on weight or smell the roses?! Also, this comes with 30 freakin servings of 65g of protein and almost 10g of creatine!! Honestly this is the best protein powder I've ever been on.
