Pumping Up? How to Pick Your Protein Supplement

Pumping Up? How to Pick Your Protein Supplement
Pumping Up? How to Pick Your Protein Supplement

Our protein supplement guide will help you excel on the court, in the gym, or on the road
If you take your workouts seriously, nutrition should be top of mind too. Protein is a great place to start, and focusing on getting the right types of protein, in the right amounts, and at the right times is key. Our protein supplement guide will help you meet your wellness goals, potentially improving your performance on the court, in the gym, or on the road.

What type?

Whey

Whey protein is quick to digest and provides all of the protein building blocks - the amino acids. Our bodies cannot make some amino acids, and whey is ideal for meeting essential amino acid needs. Whey also supplies branched-chain amino acids (BCAA), and some research supports that they aid muscle recovery after hard workouts.

Casein

Compared with whey, casein is slower to digest, and results in a lower, yet more prolonged rise in blood amino acid levels, which may provide a particular advantage for body builders. At least one study supports that casein outshines whey in terms of promoting strength and lean body mass gains in people following a structured weight-training plan.

Rice

Rice protein is less likely to create allergic reactions than other proteins, and it comes from a plant, making it appropriate for vegetarians. Another potential advantage is that rice protein contains a high proportion of arginine, an amino acid that can dilate blood vessels, possibly enhancing blood flow to muscles. Rice is not a "complete" protein however; it doesn't supply all of the essential amino acids. Some products combine rice protein with proteins from sources like soy or milk to make it complete.

Egg

Egg protein is ideal for people who are looking to build new muscle. It has a very high protein efficiency ratio (PER), which is one measure of how well our bodies can use any particular form of protein. The higher the PER, the more efficiently our bodies can use that protein when we eat it. Egg is off the charts in terms of PER. Egg protein also is a complete protein, and is a good source of essential and branched chain amino acids. Egg protein powder is made from egg whites, and comes in a convenient, pasteurized powder form.

Soy

Soy protein is a high-quality plant protein that provides all essential amino acids, making it a good option for vegetarians. For the body to best utilize soy protein, vegetarians should also eat grain or dairy within a few days. Soy protein comes in two basic forms: soy protein isolate and soy protein concentrate. Soy protein isolate is the most highly purified form, and has a minimum protein content of 90%. Soy protein concentrate contains more carbohydrates, and has a protein content of approximately 70%. Concentrates tend to cost a little less, but if you find soy protein concentrate doesn't agree with you, try isolate, which is easier for some people to digest.

How much?

With protein, as with many nutrients, more is not always better. According to Dr. Doug Paddon-Jones, Associate Professor at the University of Texas Medical Branch and Director of Exercise Studies, "30 grams of protein appears to stimulate maximum muscle synthesis. For athletes, each meal and snack is a chance to hit the 30 gram mark, giving your body several opportunities each day to maximize muscle growth and repair."

Another reason to spread protein evenly through the day is simple efficiency. "Given that your body won't use much beyond 30 grams of protein at a time, it doesn't make sense to load up with more than this," says Paddon-Jones.

When?

  • Breakfast-To support muscle building first thing in the morning, try trading traditional carb-heavy breakfast foods for more protein-rich options, such as a powder protein supplement mixed with milk and cereal.
  • If you're heading into a long strength-training session-Sipping a casein-based protein supplement prior to and during your workout will give muscles sustained access to amino acids. If taken in the evening, casein can provide a steady supply of amino acids while you're sleeping.
  • Immediately pre- or post-workout-Especially if your workout includes aerobic or circuit training, protein manufacturers recommend a whey protein-based liquid or powder supplement.

Comments about ULTIMATE NUTRITION® Iso-Mass Xtreme Gainer - Soft Vanilla Ice Cream:

Started out at 155, am now almost 175.(after 2 tubs) Friends I haven't seen in a while clearly notice and tell me I'm getting bigger, the good kind. Ive actually been using it lazily on and off and still have great results. Working out every other or every two days. It takes care of the most important thing to getting big which is calories, take three times a day and work out to get big fast. I was always a hard gainer super fast metabolism, but this stuff works!
and yea you wont be drinking it for the taste.. just chug it and after a while you get used to it.

Comments about ULTIMATE NUTRITION® Iso-Mass Xtreme Gainer - Soft Vanilla Ice Cream:

This product is good for me because of the carbs to protein ratio. Alot of gainers out there dont have the grams of protein that i need, so im forced to take additional supplements. Also there is 30 servings per container, which is uncommon. I like to mix one serving with 8oz. of milk, and one serving of peanut butter in a blender. Though it does have a fishy smell, it tastes great. A+ product.

Comments about ULTIMATE NUTRITION® Iso-Mass Xtreme Gainer - Soft Vanilla Ice Cream:

I am the type that burns alot of cal everyday. I was looking for a product that provided the calories I needed, but with a good taste(at least tolerable). I have put on about 20lbs since using it. I do try to eat everything in reach, but this product with out a doubt has helped. I have a personal trainer that now recommeds this product bc of the outstanding results my body has shown in the short period of time I have been using it. If you want to put on the lbs, eat alot and take at least one serving per day.

Comments about ULTIMATE NUTRITION® Iso-Mass Xtreme Gainer - Soft Vanilla Ice Cream:

I've been taking this product for a week and a half now and havent seen results as of yet (again it's only been a week or so). Overall though, it gives me what I need. I'm a 28 year old looking to gain 20 pounds. I currently weigh 149 and just want to add some muscle mass and enhance my physique. This product gives me about 900 calories a serving which is almost 1/3 of my daily calorie intake so it's definitely helping in that regard. It's taken me a little bit to get into the taste but it's not that bad, to be honest. I have the vanilla and once you get past the fish smell it taste like melted/milky vanilla ice cream (I just keep reminding me that the smel is a fish oil, rather than a fish, lol). At any rate, I like the product and for the price it's pretty economical because it'll last about 30 days or so.

Comments about ULTIMATE NUTRITION® Iso-Mass Xtreme Gainer - Soft Vanilla Ice Cream:

I have tried multiple gainers and this one is by far, without a question, hands down the best one that I've tried. I always read the reviews and was skeptical about people noting certain gains that I didn't think was realistic. They are very realistic as long as you keep with the program and workout the way you should along with a good diet and lots of sleep. Also, this product actually taste great, mixes well, smells bad but that's because it's packed with all the good stuff.

I'm an has been baseball player, 29 years old, and looking to add mass and build muscle. I started taking this product at 6 ft 150 lbs. which has been my normal stable weight and was able to put on 18 lbs. to 168 lbs. over 2 months taking 3 scoops in the morning and 3 scoops after workouts at night, in combination with a solid high protein/high calorie diet.

For the first month I was taking only 3 scoops a day which was giving me about 2 lbs, per week. Then I doubled my intake to the recommended 3 scoops twice a day and was able to gain 4 lbs. per week. I plan to cut and burn around 5 lbs. and do it all over again. For all of you hardgainers out there this is you what you need. I would say this gainer has allowed me to grow and build muscle in 2 months what would normally have taken me 6 months easy.

I'm also taking Ultimate Nutritions Amino Bolic as well as there Testostro Grow HP 2. I highly recommend all of their products.

I tried this on the advice of a friend and was very disappointed. The smell when open the container is very fishy. It does not mix well it clumps in the blender and sticks to everything. The taste is not bad when mixed with juice but I have gone back to my old product which mixes well, tastes good and has the same amount of protein for the same price. I would not buy this again.
