Health Notes

Rice Protein

Rice Protein
  • Reliable and relatively consistent scientific data showing a substantial health benefit.
  • Contradictory, insufficient, or preliminary studies suggesting a health benefit or minimal health benefit.
  • For an herb, supported by traditional use but minimal or no scientific evidence. For a supplement, little scientific support.

Our proprietary "Star-Rating" system was developed to help you easily understand the amount of scientific support behind each supplement in relation to a specific health condition. While there is no way to predict whether a vitamin, mineral, or herb will successfully treat or prevent associated health conditions, our unique ratings tell you how well these supplements are understood by the medical community, and whether studies have found them to be effective for other people.

For over a decade, our team has combed through thousands of research articles published in reputable journals. To help you make educated decisions, and to better understand controversial or confusing supplements, our medical experts have digested the science into these three easy-to-follow ratings. We hope this provides you with a helpful resource to make informed decisions towards your health and well-being.

This supplement has been used in connection with the following health conditions:

Used for AmountWhy
Atherosclerosis
Refer to label instructions 1 star[1 star]
Though not yet proven in clinical research, animal studies suggest that rice protein-based diets result in less buildup of atherosclerotic plaque compared with animal protein-based diets.
Athletic Performance
Refer to label instructions 1 star[1 star]
Some athletes believe rice protein may also improve blood flow to muscle to enhance growth and repair. However, no research has investigated the effects of rice protein on athletic performance.
Obesity
Refer to label instructions 1 star[1 star]
Dieters who are gluten or dairy sensitive and looking to supplement protein might consider rice protein, though its actual benefits for weight loss have not been studied.

Rice protein is extracted from rice and used in some protein supplements. Vegetarians may prefer it over protein supplements made from animal sources (such as whey or casein, which are milk proteins). Since rice is rarely involved in food allergies,1 rice protein may also be preferred by people with food allergies, and may be suitable to use in hypoallergenic infant formulas.2 Rice protein is not a complete protein, however, due to insufficient levels of the amino acids lysine and threonine.3, 4 Therefore, these amino acids are often added to rice protein products to correct this imbalance.

Product is great for recovery and pre-workout. I usually take half before and half after working out. People complained about the taste but is not that bad. A lot easier to take than shakes and doesn't mess up my stomach like shakes do.

Comments about IDS SPORTS 1008793 IDS Sports New-Whey 42™ Liquid Protein - Grape:

This product is the only protien supplement I have been able to consistantly use. Shakes are dreadful and New Whey has many flavors to choose from. I have read many people say the taste is not so great or its hard to swallow. I can see how somebody might say that if they take it straight. However I mix it with a low calorie juice or sports drink which not only makes consumption easy but also allows me to mix flavors so that I never get tired of it. It also taste much better than Gatorade G3 with 3 times the protien. (I only use half of the 42g tube per day.) Results are "good" because obviously varibles like diet, exercise routine/commitment and amount used all contribute to its effectiveness.
The only downside I have found is shelf life. After about 3 months the seal breaks down and it becomes thick or crystalizes. But keep in mind it's synthetic protein. Duh?
Finally, my opinion when it comes to "recovery" is it's incredibly helpful. I have chronic shoulder issues and I find that if I cycle off the IDS New Whey my pain will return in 30-45 days.

This is a great way to get your protein in after gastric by pass. Just remember that you cannot absorb more than 22 mg at one time so use only half of it early in the day and the other half later in the day. After gastric by pass it is difficult to get in 60 mg each day.

This is a great way to get a significant amount of protein without having to mix a shake, which can sometimes be a pain. The label says that it does not need to be refrigerated. However, it tastes much better cold. I always keep some in the fridge so that I can just grab one when I get home from the gym. By that point, I am pretty hot and tired, so the protein shot is actually kind of refreshing. This is pretty pricey, so I try to stock up when ever I can find it on sale. I tend to go pretty heavy when I lift, but I am hardly ever very sore, and when I am, it isn't for very long. I love this stuff and consider it a staple of my diet.

I had gastric bypass and use this to increase my protein intake which is lacking on many days. It tastes horrible but I can get 42 grams of protein down in two gulps. I use various things to get rid of the bad taste in my mouth and have found a swig of V-8 is the best plus I get a veggie serving out of the way at the same time. It's pricey but very convenient.

I loathe using products to aid in recovery and during work outs. With that said at the recommendation of my trainer D, I tried it and though it is difficult to swallow. IT WAS WELL WORTH IT. I was not as sore and it aided me in my recovery of soreness. Especially on my muscle fatigue days (my son and I call 100's).

My 11 year old son took a taste and stated that it tastes like pedialyte but thicker. He tried taking mine away!

I do not see anything bad about it only that I have to battle my son for mine. Son is training for football.

He also stated that he was not as sore and if you chase it with water it is not bad he would also recommend it.
