Health Notes

Rice Protein

Rice Protein
This nutrient has been used in connection with the following health goals
  • Reliable and relatively consistent scientific data showing a substantial health benefit.
  • Contradictory, insufficient, or preliminary studies suggesting a health benefit or minimal health benefit.
  • For an herb, supported by traditional use but minimal or no scientific evidence. For a supplement, little scientific support.

Our proprietary "Star-Rating" system was developed to help you easily understand the amount of scientific support behind each supplement in relation to a specific health condition. While there is no way to predict whether a vitamin, mineral, or herb will successfully treat or prevent associated health conditions, our unique ratings tell you how well these supplements are understood by the medical community, and whether studies have found them to be effective for other people.

For over a decade, our team has combed through thousands of research articles published in reputable journals. To help you make educated decisions, and to better understand controversial or confusing supplements, our medical experts have digested the science into these three easy-to-follow ratings. We hope this provides you with a helpful resource to make informed decisions towards your health and well-being.

This supplement has been used in connection with the following health conditions:

Atherosclerosis
Dose: Refer to label instructions
Though not yet proven in clinical research, animal studies suggest that rice protein-based diets result in less buildup of atherosclerotic plaque compared with animal protein-based diets. (more)
Athletic Performance
Dose: Refer to label instructions
Some athletes believe rice protein may also improve blood flow to muscle to enhance growth and repair. However, no research has investigated the effects of rice protein on athletic performance. (more)
Obesity
Dose: Refer to label instructions
Dieters who are gluten or dairy sensitive and looking to supplement protein might consider rice protein, though its actual benefits for weight loss have not been studied.(more)
Atherosclerosis
Dose: Refer to label instructionsAnimal studies suggest that rice protein-based diets result in less buildup of atherosclerotic plaque compared with animal protein-based diets.1 This effect may be due to mechanisms involving antioxidant function,2 cholesterol metabolism,3 or insulin function.4 Controlled human studies are needed to determine whether consuming rice protein can prevent or treat atherosclerotic disease.

Athletic Performance
Dose: Refer to label instructions

Compared with other protein supplements, rice protein has more of the amino acid arginine, and since arginine is a vasodilator that can enhance blood flow to tissues, some athletes believe rice protein may also improve blood flow to muscle to enhance growth and repair. However, no research has investigated the effects of rice protein on athletic performance.

Obesity
Dose: Refer to label instructionsDieters who are gluten or dairy sensitive and looking to supplement protein might consider rice protein, though its actual benefits for weight loss have not been studied.

Rice protein is extracted from rice and used in some protein supplements. Vegetarians may prefer it over protein supplements made from animal sources (such as whey or casein, which are milk proteins). Since rice is rarely involved in food allergies,1 rice protein may also be preferred by people with food allergies, and may be suitable to use in hypoallergenic infant formulas.2 Rice protein is not a complete protein, however, due to insufficient levels of the amino acids lysine and threonine.3, 4 Therefore, these amino acids are often added to rice protein products to correct this imbalance.

This product (now available in four favor varieties) makes a great breakfast bar, and is perfect with that morning cup of coffee for a busy schedule. These bars can be eaten as is, or pop them in the microwave for a few seconds to warm them up. They are high in protein, from a variety of sources. This, along with their fiber content, makes them a filling and satisy on-the-go breakfast alternative.

Comments about GNC Pro Performance® Oatmeal Protein Bar Deluxe - Peanut Butter Caramel:

Compared to the Myoplex Meal Replacement bars, these are really bad tasting. The stench of whey is very heavy and tastes like you are eating raw whey powder. Putting it in the microwave for 10-15 does help, but none-the-less it is a bad flavor bar. Definitely get the Myoplex bars Lite or Reg. My Fav is the Peanut Caramel Crisp.

Comments about GNC Pro Performance® Oatmeal Protein Bar Deluxe - Peanut Butter Caramel:

This is BY FAR the best tasting protein bar I've ever had, and I've tried quite a few over the years!

It gives you a nice boost, is a GREAT meal alternative or snack in-between regular meals, and is full of all the good stuff!

Make sure to get these w/ a discount (Gold Card, etc) otherwise it's not a great value, since there are only 8 bars in a box.

I also bought the chocolate chip as well, just so I'd have a nice stash and to compare taste. The taste of those weren't terrible, and are actually quite good if you nuke it in the microwave for about 30 seconds; The peanut butter caramel is the runaway winner! You can't go wrong!

Comments about GNC Pro Performance® Oatmeal Protein Bar Deluxe - Peanut Butter Caramel:

I have tried both the chocolate chip flavor and the peanut butter caramel flavor. I like the peanut butter caramel much better.

This product along with Mega Men Spot Vitapaks and Triple Strength Fish Oil have been a part of my weight loss routine for quite a few months now and I have seen my progress actually accelerating since then. I've tried other brands that cost twice the price as this, but this is the one I keep coming back to. You just can't beat its combination of protein and fiber, and fiber is an area where other bars are lacking.

I use it as a meal replacement everyday, either for breakfast or lunch. It leaves me feeling satisfied. Overall I would say that, unless carbs are an issue to you, you can't go wrong with these, and especially not at this price.

Eating one of these as a meal replacement everyday is a great part of a weight loss/getting-into-shape routine. And it's actually cheaper than buying a week's worth of lunches too after the gold card discount if you buy two at a time.
