Athletic Performance

Animal studies suggest that whey protein can increase gains in lean body mass resulting from exercise.1 A controlled trial found that six weeks of strength training while taking 1.2 grams of whey protein per 2.2 of pounds body weight per day resulted in greater gains in lean body mass, but improved only one out of four strength tests.2 Another controlled study found that people taking 20 grams per day of whey protein for three months performed better on a test of short-term intense cycling exercise than people taking a similar amount of milk protein (casein).3 However, a double-blind trial found that men taking 1.5 grams per 2.2 lbs of body weight per day of predigested whey protein for 12 weeks along with a strength training exercise program gained only half as much lean body mass and had significantly smaller increases in strength compared with men using a similar amount of predigested casein along with strength training.4 A controlled study of HIV-infected women found that adding whey protein to strength training exercise was no more effective than exercise alone for increasing strength or improving body composition.5

Whey protein may aid weight loss due to its effect on appetite. In a preliminary study, people were given 48 grams of either whey protein or milk protein (casein). Whey consumption resulted in more hunger satisfaction and reduced the amount of food eaten 90 minutes later compared with casein consumption.1 However, a double-blind study found that men taking 1.5 grams per 2.2 lbs body weight per day of whey protein for 12 weeks along with a low-calorie diet and a strength training exercise program lost the same amount of weight and body fat as did a control group that followed a similar program, but took a casein supplement instead of whey protein.2

Whey protein is a mixture of some of the proteins naturally found in milk. The major proteins found in whey protein include beta-lactoglobulin and alpha-lactalbumin. Wow. What can I say. This is hands down the best protein I've ever used. I take a scoop and a half (30g protein) with 8oz. of milk immediately after working out. The flavor is amazing. If I had to describe it, it'd be hot cocoa with a dash of cinnamon. Cookies and Cream is good also, but I think I like Chocolate a hair better.

This is an incredible recovery protein. The effects can be felt within two minutes of consumption. It is a very quickly digested protein. It feels as though my tired muscles are being "quenched." Soreness usually lasts less than a day after using this. They weren't lying about strength increases. Nearly all my maxes went up in the short time using this. I put on lean muscle and saw great gains.

The label says to use three scoops. That's ridiculous. Most people cannot possibly absorb that much protein. I'm 6'4" 165lbs and 1.5 scoops is just fine. Obviously, if you're bigger, 2-2.5 scoops is more of what you'd need. This is not the best meal replacement protein. It's way too expensive and quickly digested to be used that way.

When it comes down to it, this is the protein to go to for post-workout recovery. You get what you pay for, and this product is worth every penny and then some. I've recommended this to all my friends, and I continue to order it.

    I'm a girl that has never believed in using GNC products or any products to help build muscle or relieve soreness but I train really hard to become better. I start using this after every workout/run/practice and after weeks its like my body is doing things it couldn't have done in double the time! at first I didn't have faith, at first it tasted nasty but now I just had to recommend it and I crave that chocolate milky taste! for example, I started a new semester of weight training and started off with squatting 120, in two weeks I am doing 170 and that is a bigger difference in way less time then last time I took weight training ( 4 months and my max ended at 140 from about 100) Also I barely am ever really bad sore! sure I loved that sore feeling it made me feel like I was getting somewhere and told me I had a great workout, but its not as bad and I can train just as hard the next day and only have 1 rest day per week! I hope this helps your decision in buying the best. don't drink it and not do nothing that won't do you any good and you can't quit after a week!

      Went to GNC one day and the employee recommended this because I am a ectomorph. I used to take muscle milk,but I didn't really see much of a improvement. Ever since i've been taking this,i've seen a big difference. I went from 60lbs for my workouts on the chestpress to 80lbs in about a bag and a half. I don't even feel sore at all the day after a hard workout. It might be pricey,but I prefer quality over quantity.

        I started taking this while I was going to AIT in Kentucky. I would drink 12oz 30 mins before my workout. It helps you thru your workout and it really help me increase my running distance. After about a week of taking this no matter how hard the workout was I never had any soreness. In about three weeks of using it five days a week i gained ten pounds of lean muscle. It is awesome love the product.

            I have trouble eating before playing tennis, so one scoop of this protein mixed with 8 oz of almond milk or regular milk does the trick for me. Holds me over for a doubles match (I am a small female). My teen age daughter also finds it pleasant enough to drink before her track practice. It holds her over as well. The chocolate flavor mixed with the vanilla is nice. Price is pretty high so I wait to get it when it goes on sale.

              I needed something to help me through some tough Crossfit workouts. I tried this after some hard high rep. Power Clean workout that I felt I really struggled in. After a week of taking the product not only did I complete a high rep Olympic type workout in a faster time and more weight but also flew through some intense cardio (Burpees) after the weight lifting. Like every crossfit workout they are still tough but this helped me push through the workout. Taste isn't a factor for me.. As long as I can get the drink down that's fine for me. Is it effective? I'd say yes. I also take Mega Men Sport Multivitamin as prescribed.

              Very effective recovery formula, really makes muscles recover faster! However, It won't mix with water easily and leaves a chemical aftertaste! I recommend using it if you don't have a more natural source of protien!
