Athletic Performance

Animal studies suggest that whey protein can increase gains in lean body mass resulting from exercise.1 A controlled trial found that six weeks of strength training while taking 1.2 grams of whey protein per 2.2 of pounds body weight per day resulted in greater gains in lean body mass, but improved only one out of four strength tests.2 Another controlled study found that people taking 20 grams per day of whey protein for three months performed better on a test of short-term intense cycling exercise than people taking a similar amount of milk protein (casein).3 However, a double-blind trial found that men taking 1.5 grams per 2.2 lbs of body weight per day of predigested whey protein for 12 weeks along with a strength training exercise program gained only half as much lean body mass and had significantly smaller increases in strength compared with men using a similar amount of predigested casein along with strength training.4 A controlled study of HIV-infected women found that adding whey protein to strength training exercise was no more effective than exercise alone for increasing strength or improving body composition.5

A preliminary trial found that 300 mg per day of MBP improved blood measures of bone metabolism in men, suggesting more bone formation was occurring than bone loss.2 A double-blind trial found that women taking 40 mg per day of MBP for six months had greater gains in bone density compared with those taking a placebo.3 No osteoporosis-related research has been done using complete whey protein mixtures.

Obesity

Whey protein may aid weight loss due to its effect on appetite. In a preliminary study, people were given 48 grams of either whey protein or milk protein (casein). Whey consumption resulted in more hunger satisfaction and reduced the amount of food eaten 90 minutes later compared with casein consumption.1 However, a double-blind study found that men taking 1.5 grams per 2.2 lbs body weight per day of whey protein for 12 weeks along with a low-calorie diet and a strength training exercise program lost the same amount of weight and body fat as did a control group that followed a similar program, but took a casein supplement instead of whey protein.2

Whey protein is a mixture of some of the proteins naturally found in milk. The major proteins found in whey protein include beta-lactoglobulin and alpha-lactalbumin. Whey protein has one of the highest protein digestibility-corrected amino acid scores (PDCAAS; a measure of protein bioavailability) and is more rapidly digested than other proteins, such as casein (another milk protein). 1

    Purchased this as the ingredient list is very good, and protein content is ok (although some are over 25G per scoop, this is only 20G per scoop). Mixes well, but tastes alot like vanilla chalk (purchased Vanilla flavor). Needless to say, I am taking it back only due to the flavor and that it was slightly pricey. There are alot of other options online for under $1.00 per serving that have higher protein content and better taste.

      Purchased for Husband who is training for a half marathon. He could not eat after his long runs so I purchased this product to get him the necessary protein he needed without having to eat anything. He loves the flavor and usually just mixes it with water in a shaker. On the weekends I will make him a fruit smoothie with the powder. It has really helped him feel better after runs.

          I love this. I mix it with Simply Smart fat free milk and use it before and after workouts & often as a meal replacement later in the day. I add coconut, almond, cherry, etc. extracts for a little variety. I eat very little meat so this fulfills my daily protein requirement.

              I use this powder in smoothies with milk and a frozen fruit (ie: blueberries, bannanas or strawberries). It blends nicely in blender. I'm not sure how it would taste or blend using just water. I use it before my workouts almost always and sometimes after if I'm not able to eat within an hour of my workout. I also only use one scoop which is 20mg of protein plenty for me. I'm a female @ 50 and 130lbs.

                  This is a great product and it tastes pretty good, but it is expensive and if you use it the way they recommend it doesn't last much longer than a week. The other thing I don't like is that people make a big deal about it having 60g of protein in a serving, but one serving is three scoops so there is only 20g of protein in a scoop as opposed to ON which has 24g in the same size scoop.

                  i used this 30 minutes after my work out i only used 2 scoops instead of the 3 they asked. the only thing i feel it did was help not be so sore the next day. i dont feel it gaining strength.

                    On days when I don't go to the gym, I'll drink this in the morning with some peanut butter. It mixes well and doesn't over power the peanut butter. I'm not usually a fan of vanilla flavored products so I won't drink this by itself but it's plain enough that its' flavor won't over power anything that is added.
