Health Notes

Biotin

Biotin
This nutrient has been used in connection with the following health goals
  • Reliable and relatively consistent scientific data showing a substantial health benefit.
  • Contradictory, insufficient, or preliminary studies suggesting a health benefit or minimal health benefit.
  • For an herb, supported by traditional use but minimal or no scientific evidence. For a supplement, little scientific support.

Our proprietary "Star-Rating" system was developed to help you easily understand the amount of scientific support behind each supplement in relation to a specific health condition. While there is no way to predict whether a vitamin, mineral, or herb will successfully treat or prevent associated health conditions, our unique ratings tell you how well these supplements are understood by the medical community, and whether studies have found them to be effective for other people.

For over a decade, our team has combed through thousands of research articles published in reputable journals. To help you make educated decisions, and to better understand controversial or confusing supplements, our medical experts have digested the science into these three easy-to-follow ratings. We hope this provides you with a helpful resource to make informed decisions towards your health and well-being.

Dose: 9 to 16 mg dailyBiotin is a B vitamin needed to process glucose. When people with type 2 diabetes were given 9 mg of biotin per day for two months, their fasting glucose levels dropped dramatically.1 Biotin may also reduce pain from diabetic nerve damage.2 Some doctors try 9 to 16 mg of biotin per day for a few weeks to see if blood sugar levels will fall.

Pregnancy and Postpartum Support
Dose: Use a prenatal supplement that includes biotin

Biotin deficiency may occur in as many as 50% of pregnant women.1 As biotin deficiency in pregnant animals results in birth defects, it seems reasonable to use a prenatal multiple vitamin and mineral formula that contains biotin.

Seborrheic Dermatitis
Dose: Refer to label instructions

Preliminary studies have found that injecting either the infant or the nursing mother with biotin may be an effective treatment for cradle cap.1, 2 Studies of oral biotin have yielded mixed results in infants. Older preliminary studies and case reports suggest that 4 mg per day of oral biotin might be sufficient for mild cases of cradle cap, but 10 mg per day was required for more severe cases.3 Two more recent, controlled trials found that oral biotin (4 or 5 mg per day) produced no benefit.4, 5 Thus, the scientific support for using oral biotin to treat cradle cap is weak. The role of biotin in adult seborrheic dermatitis has not been studied.

Brittle Nails
Dose: 2.5 mg daily

Biotin, a B vitamin, is known to strengthen hooves in animals. As a result, Swiss researchers investigated the use of biotin in strengthening brittle fingernails in humans, despite the fact that it remains unclear exactly how biotin affects nail structure. An uncontrolled trial of 2.5 mg biotin per day found improved firmness and hardness in almost all cases after an average treatment time of 5.5 months.1 In a controlled trial using 2.5 mg of biotin per day, women with brittle nails, who had their nail thickness measured before and at six to fifteen months after, found their nail thickness increased by 25%. As a result, splitting of nails was reduced. In an uncontrolled study of people who had been taking biotin for brittle nails in America, 63% showed improvement from taking biotin.2 Although the amount of research on the subject is quite limited and positive effects do not appear in all people, those people having brittle nails may want to consider a trial period of at least several months, using 2.5 mg per day of biotin.

This product actually works!!! I've seen some hair growth on my forehead around the hair line. But you need to take it everyday and it takes about one month to notice the difference. I am not sure about the skin part though.

Comments about GNC Hair, Skin, & Nails Program:

I purchased this product when on sale after checking into Hairfinity vitamins and refusing the pay the price. After comparing both brands I settled on GNC HSN program and I have seen some pretty awesome results. I've been on the program for 3 weeks now and my skin all over my body has dramatically improved! It's so smooth and soft and my face has reduced pimples and the complexion is getting better.

I bought the same program for my little sister to help with her hair and she'll be taking it soon. (Will update with her comments after ~3wks)

As far as my hair goes I've noticed a drastic decrease in shedding (which was my #1 issue). My hair feels stronger and my scalp healthier which is all I can ask for. I haven't been documenting my growth just because I'm focusing on healthy hair at the moment and growth will come along with it. I have 4b hair btw. I will be repurchasing this item for the months to come! :)

I have been using this program for three months now, & I have noticed a HUGE improvement in my skin. I've had zero breakouts for the past two cycles, and that's never happened to me before. My nails are growing faster, my hair is fuller. I absolutely love it, it's the best program I've been on that actually does what it says. It's super affordable as well, so I can continue to take it. I still can't believe how good my skin has been doing since I started this program. I will recommend it to all of my lady friends, and a few of them have started taking it. I'm excited about the results after 3 months!

Comments about GNC Hair, Skin, & Nails Program:

I'm Asian American with bleached blonde hair. For about three years my hair stayed at one length just below my bust. I am now on my fourth month of the 30 day program and have been taking this product daily as directed. Honestly, my hair is not much shinier and still sheds but I have definitely noticed growth. My hair has grown about 5 inches and is still going. I've also gotten comments on how my hair looks a lot thicker. I'm also happy to report that I a lot less split ends.

Skin- I used to have moderately dry skin but this product has really helped that. I never really get any pimples of any kind any more and barely have to use foundation on my face.

nails- they grow really fast, but are no longer brittle. my nails are strong after using this product =]

Comments about GNC Hair, Skin, & Nails Program:

I didnt want to write a review on this before I used it for a while. I've been taking these pills for about two months now. I'm not going to lie... I havent noticed any changes in my skin or hair as far as texture is concerned. BUT... I went to my hair salon the other day and the woman who does my hair was SHOCKED how much my hair grew in the last two months. She said "that is the most I've ever seen someones hair grow in two months". Now, I never told her I was taking the pills... she just noticed from my uncolored roots. If you want your hair to grow really fast this is a great product!

Comments about GNC Hair, Skin, & Nails Program:

I have been taking this supplement for only 3 days now and I have already noticed a difference! My hair tonight looks super shiny and is smooth and soft. And this was after just washing it and throwing it in a ponytail wet. I also seem to be "shedding" less. I have naturally thin hair and I have also been losing a lot of it and recently colored my hair, which did some damage. I now have to say, it looks healthier than before I colored it! If I keep seeing results, I will continue to use this supplement for the rest of my life!
